Andre Ethier: I think I'll have a chance to start for the Dodgers

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(2/24/2015) Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier has not backed down from his December comments and reiterated to reporters that he has a chance to start in 2015, per the Los Angeles Times.

"I would hope so and think so," Ethier said. "With me still being here, I have to assume that they're at least considering it."

Ethier was included in several of Los Angeles trade discussion over the offseason, but wound up stating put. President of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said earlier in the winter that he would like to trade at least one outfielder to make the Dodgers a more functional team, per ESPN.

The 33-year-old lost his starting job in 2014, and is owed $18 million over each of the next two seasons. He met with president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, general manager Farhan Zaidi and manager Don Mattingly to clear the air before the start of camp.

"It was good," Ethier said. "It was a chance to all sit in a room for the first time, all four of us, and kind of clear the air and see where each one of us stands, to get what we had off our chests."

He will likely have to compete with Joc Pederson and Carl Crawford for a starting spot in the spring. Ethier played just 92 games in the outfield in 2014, making 78 starts. He hit .249/.322/.370 with four home runs and 42 RBI in 341 at-bats.

Dodgers' Mattingly expects professionalism from Andre Ethier this year

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(2/23/2015) Dodgers manager Don Mattingly wants to keep things civil between the outfielders in 2015. Speaking mostly of how Andre Ethier could be the odd man out of the starting lineup when the season begins.

"I never expect Andre to be a problem," said Mattingly to MLB.com. "He's always professional. Understandably, guys aren't happy when they aren't playing as much as they want. He was a pro about it and wasn't a problem."

Ethier lost his starting job in 2014 and this year will likely see Chris Heisey in center, Carl Crawford in left and Yasiel Puig in right, according to MLB.com.

Ethier hit .249 in 2014 with four home runs and 42 RBI in 341 plate appearances.

Pederson, Ethier to compete for Dodgers' starting center-field job

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1/14/2015) Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi said the center-field competition this spring will be between Joc Pederson and Andre Ethier, according to MLB Network Radio.

Earlier Wednesday, manager Don Mattingly indicated as much to the media as well. Mattingly said if Pederson makes the team out of camp, then "he's going to play a lot." But added Ethier will get the chance to compete for a spot in the starting lineup this spring.

"If you put up the numbers, you'll play," Mattingly said, per TrueBlueLA.com.

Report: Orioles have discussed Dodgers Andre Ethier

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(1/4/2015) The Orioles have had trade discussions for Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier, according to MASN.

The 33-year-old Ethier is owed $18 million over each of the next two seasons. He'll earn $17.5 million in 2017. It's a hefty contract for the Orioles to absorb, and it's assumed the Dodgers would cover a portion of the deal based on the quality of player they receive for Ethier.

Ethier hit .249/.322/.370 over 341 at-bats last year.

Report: Ethier deal between Dodgers, Diamondbacks falls through

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(12/6/2014) A trade that would have sent Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier to the Diamondbacks fell through when Arizona's ownership declined to give final approval on the deal, FOXSports.com reports.

The proposed trade involved Ethier and catcher Tim Federowicz heading to the Diamondbacks in exchange for catcher Miguel Montero and lower-level prospects. The Dodgers were also reportedly ready to kick in cash in the deal to help offset Ethier's contract. They'll instead continue to shop around for the right deal to help clear a logjam in the outfield.

Dodgers OF Andre Ethier expects to start in 2015

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(12/4/2014) Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier expects to start in 2015, whether he's with the Dodgers or traded to another team, the Los Angeles Times reports.

"Whether to play here every day or play somewhere else," Ethier said. "It was fun trying to win the way we did last year, but it didn’t prove any more successful than me playing every day or not playing every day.

"I’d rather play every day and help this team win -- or whatever team it is -- to the best of my ability. I feel I can, if given a role. As I stand here today, I’m preparing every day to be a starting outfielder for the Dodgers, until I’m told otherwise. I’m not changing my mind about that. It’s probably going to be a little less wanting to take the same role as I did last year."

Ethier played just 92 games in the outfield in 2014, making 78 starts. He hit .249/.322/.370 with four home runs and 42 RBI in 341 at-bats.

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11/10/2014) Rival executives expect the Dodgers to trade at least one veteran outfielder, and potentially two, as they attempt to sort out their crowded outfield situation, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

Sources suggest Carl Crawford and Andre Ethier are the two outfielders the Dodgers seem most likely to trade, Heyman reports.

FOX Sports MLB Insider Ken Rosenthal reported Sunday the Dodgers are aggressively trying to trade Crawford, Ethier or Matt Kemp. The Dodgers are also considering offering money in a trade since all three players have big contracts.

Dodgers not expected to make change to OF alignment

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(7/9/2014) Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Wednesday he doesn't expect to change the outfield alignment as Carl Crawford (ankle) is set to return from the disabled list this week, per MLB.com.

"I'm not really planning on making any big changes right now," Mattingly said.

Mattingly added he's happy with Matt Kemp in left field, and the platoon of Andre Ethier and Scott Van Slyke in center field.

"I like what's going on in center," Mattingly said. "We're playing pretty well. We'll talk about it. But as long as we're playing well and continue to win, we'll have conversations with everybody."

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5/28/2014) Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier ended a long power drought Tuesday, as he clubbed his first home run in nearly a month and a half in a 6-3 win over the Reds.

Ethier opened the game with a solo shot in the second inning, and that wasn't all he contributed. He added a three-run triple in the fourth inning, finishing the game 2 for 4 with two runs scored and four driven in.

Matt Kemp's glove costing him playing time

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5/23/2014) Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp's place in the team's short-term plans has taken a hit, as manager Don Mattingly told reports Friday he may no longer be the team's center fielder everyday.

Kemp's bat has been adequate so far this season, but an offseason ankle operation appears to have taken its toll on Kemp's abilities in the outfielder. Mattingly started Andre Ethier Friday against the Phillies and noted that, "center field has been a situation we continue to look at."

Kemp is not dealing with any lingering injuries at this point, but admitted to the Los Angeles Times his defense has been lacking so far.

"I'm probably not getting as a good jump as I need to on some plays," Kemp said. "I have to keep working and practicing on my defense."

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(5/17/2014) Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier is not in the team's starting lineup Saturday.

Ethier has been seeing reduced playing lately. The club has been going with Matt Kemp, Yasiel Puig and Carl Crawford in the outfield, which means Ethier is the odd man out most of the time. He's hitting .259 in 116 at-bats.

(5/10/2014) Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier is not in the team's starting lineup Saturday.

The team will go with Matt Kemp, Carl Crawford and Yasiel Puig in the outfield. Ethier has been successful against starter Matt Cain in the past, hitting .429 in 70 at-bats. He won't get a chance to add to those numbers unless he's used as a pinch-hitter.

Yasiel Puig, Matt Kemp solidifying their roles

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5/8/2014) The Dodgers are moving away from a full-time rotation in the outfielder, as manager Don Mattingly told the Los Angeles Times Thursday.

Mattingly told reporters Carl Crawford and Andre Ethier will battle for playing time at left field. That means Yasiel Puig and Matt Kemp are solidified in their roles in right and center field, respectively. When they are out of the lineup, it will only be due to rest, Mattingly said.

Ethier has actually appeared in more games than any of the four outfielders, but it seems like Puig and Kemp will play more regularly moving forward; both are the only ones of the four with an OPS over .800.

Don Mattingly makes multiple lineup changes for nightcap

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

(4/17/2014) Scott Van Slyke will get a rare start in a crowded Dodgers outfield Thursday against San Francisco. Neither Andre Ethier nor Carl Crawford is in the lineup. The Dodgers will have three right-handed hitters in the outfield against Giants ace Madison Bumgarner.

Van Slyke has been productive in 13 at-bats with four hits, including a home run in the opening game in Australia.
