Mets set to DFA Omar Quintanilla

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5/7/2014) The Mets will designate infielder Omar Quintanilla for assignment Thursday, the team announced Wednesday. A corresponding roster move will be announced Thursday.

Terry Collins unclear about shortstop position

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(2/14/2014) Terry Collins gave mixed messages about the Mets shortstop situation on Friday. He insisted that Ruben Tejada will compete with Omar Quintanilla for the starting spot, then indicated the former had all but nailed down the position.

"Ruben has rededicated himself," he told his team website. "He's ready to show people he's the starting shortstop."

Tejada did nothing of the kind in 2013. He batted just .202 with no home runs and 10 RBI in 208 at-bats and committed eight errors in limited opportunities, leading some to call for the Mets to sign a free agent such as Stephen Drew.

Omar Quintanilla, Giancarlo Alvarado re-signs with Mets

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1/18/2014) The Mets have re-signed infielder Omar Quintanilla and pitcher Giancarlo Alvarado to a minor-league deal on Saturday, according to SB Nation and ESPN New York.

Quintanilla owned a .222/.306/.283 slash line with 21 RBI over 315 at-bats in the majors last season. He also batted .333 with 18 RBI over 126 at-bats with Triple-A Las Vegas last season. Alvarado, 35, will not receive an invite to spring training after posting a 5-4 record with a 3.49 ERA over 59 1/3 innings pitched at Triple-A Las Vegas in 2013.

Mets non-tender Scott Atchison, Omar Quintanilla

by Al Melchior | Data Analyst
(12/2/2013) ESPN.com reports that the Mets non-tendered reliever Scott Atchison and shortstop Omar Quintanilla on Monday.

Atchison went 3-3 with a 4.37 ERA in 51 appearances, and Quintanilla hit .222 in 95 games, 89 of which he started at shortstop. Both players are now free agents.

Manager backs Omar Quintanilla as starter

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(8/11/2013) Mets manager Terry Collins continued to back Omar Quintanilla as the team's starting shortstop Saturday, despite Ruben Tejada's success since his demotion to the minors. The Mets are 31-29 when Quintanilla has started this season.

"I get questions every day about when the other guy is coming back -- 'When's Ruben coming back?'" Collins said, per ESPN. "I've yet to see why Omar Quintanilla should lose his job. All he does is make plays like that night after night. You look at his batting average (.224) and it's not what he'd like it to be. But he's on base 33 percent of the time and he's done a really good job. We wouldn't be playing like we're playing without him."

Omar Quintanilla 'could certainly use a rest'

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(7/25/2013) Mets shortstop Omar Quintanilla received a rare day off Thursday against the Braves. He was replaced in the lineup by Justin Turner.

Quintanilla was last held out of the starting lineup June 15. He entered play Thursday, however, mired in a 3-for-30 slump.

"It's good to get Justin in there, get him some at-bats, get him some playing time, but it's also good to give [Omar Quintanilla] a rest," Mets manager Terry Collins said, per MLB.com. "He's played every inning but one since he's been here, and I think he could certainly use a rest."

(6/29/2013) Mets shortstop Omar Quintanilla doubled in four at-bats Saturday at home in a 5-1 win over Washington. He was 2 for 4 in the game.

Quintanilla scored a run and is batting .245 on the year. The 31-year-old recorded his first two hits since notching a three-hit game back on June 22 at Philadelphia.

Omar Quintanilla has another multi-hit effort

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(6/22/2013) Mets shortstop Omar Quintanilla had his second multi-hit game in a row Saturday in an 8-7 loss to the Phillies.

Quintanilla went 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored to raise his batting average to .282. He has hits in five of the last six games, batting .429 in that span.

by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com

Omar Quintanilla filling in nicely for Mets

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(6/5/2013) Mets shortstop Omar Quintanilla walked, doubled, tripled and drove in two runs Tuesday against the Nationals. Quintanilla has hit safely in four straight games -- producing multiple hits in each game.

Quintanilla, who has replaced the injured Ruben Tejada at shortstop, is batting .600 (9 for 15) with one double, one triple, one home run, three runs and three RBI in his last four games.

Omar Quintanilla to start right away

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5/30/2013) The Mets are planning to put recently recalled infielder Omar Quintanilla to use immediately, as ESPN.com reports he will start Thursday against the Yankees at shortstop.

Quintanilla was hitting .577 over his previous 10 games at Triple-A Las Vegas, so the team wants to get him active while his bat is hot.

Omar Quintanilla gets the call

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5/30/2013) The Mets purchased the contract of infielder Omar Quintanilla from Triple-A Las Vegas Thursday, as he'll take the place of DL-bound shortstop Ruben Tejada.

Frank Francisco was placed on the 60-day disabled list to make room on the 40-man roster for Quintanilla.

Quintanilla was batting .333 with a .903 OPS at Las Vegas. He last appeared in the majors with Baltimore last season, where he hit .232 in 99 at-bats.

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/29/2013) Mets infielder Omar Quintanilla was pulled from his Triple-A game Wednesday night after Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada suffered a quad injury, ESPN New York reports. It's likely Tejada hits the disabled list and Quintanilla is promoted before Thursday's game.
