J.P. Howell takes loss vs. Giants Wednesday

(4/17/2014) Dodgers pitcher J.P. Howell suffered the loss Wednesday, giving up one earned run on one hit and two walks in two-thirds of an inning while striking out one in his team's 2-1 loss to the Giants.

Howell (1-1) was pulled from the game after surrendering an RBI single in the seventh inning, but the run would end up being the decider in the low-scoring affair. Howell owns a 1.23 ERA and 8:5 K:BB ratio in 7 1/3 innings.


J.P. Howell picks up the win Tuesday

(4/9/2014) Dodgers reliever J.P. Howell managed to pick up a win Tuesday night against the Tigers. 

Howell was brought in after Kenley Jansen managed to blow a save in the ninth inning. Jansen pitched a perfect inning, striking out one batter. After putting up a scoreless frame in the top of the 10th, the Dodgers were able to drive in a walkoff hit in the bottom of the inning. 

Howell moved to 1-0 on the season.

The deal was initially reported by FoxSports.com, and has now been finished. Howell will take a physical Thursday, which will make the deal official. Howell pitched with the club last season, posting a 2.03 ERA in 62 innings.

(12/16/2013) The Dodgers have agreed to terms with reliever J.P. Howell Monday on a two-year contract worth $11.25 million, according to FOXSports.com. The deal includes a $6.25 million vesting option, though it is not yet complete.

Howell was a big part of the Dodgers' bullpen last season, posting a 2.03 ERA in 62 innings of work. He struck out 54 batters and walked 23, while allowing just two home runs in 67 appearances. 


J.P. Howell, Boone Logan in Rockies sights

(12/12/2013) The Rockies came out of the winter meetings Thursday feeling like they would land one of two left-handed relievers, either J.P. Howell or Boone Logan, in the days ahead, according to The Denver Post.

They have a preference for Howell but have also engaged in serious discussions with Logan. Howell had a 2.03 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 7.8 strikeouts per nine innings in 67 appearances for the Dodgers last season. Logan had a 3.23 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings in 61 appearances for the Yankees.


Nationals interested in Oliver Perez, other left-handed relievers

(11/16/2013) The Nationals have significant interest in free-agent lefty reliever Oliver Perez, the Washington Post reports. The team has also expressed interest in free-agent left-handers Javier Lopez and Boone Logan, while Manny Parra and J.P. Howell may also be free-agent options.

Perez spent the 2011 season in the Nationals organization, going 3-5 with a 3.09 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 58:27 K:BB ratio in 75 2/3 innings over 16 appearances (15 starts) with Double-A Harrisburg. He pitched for the Mariners strictly as a reliever over the last two seasons, going 4-6 with a 3.16 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 98:36 K:BB ratio in 82 2/3 innings.


Several Dodgers become free agents

(11/6/2013) Dodgers third baseman Juan Uribe, starting pitcher Edinson Volquez, relief pitcher Brian Wilson, third baseman Michael Young, utility player Jerry Hairston, relief pitcher J.P. Howell, relief pitcher Carlos Marmol, starting pitcher Ricky Nolasco, infielder Nick Punto and utility player Skip Schumaker have filed for free agency.

They join second baseman Mark Ellis, who had his team option declined, and starting pitcher Chris Capuano, who had his mutual option declined.


J.P. Howell struggles in return from suspension

(6/20/2013) Dodgers reliever J.P. Howell pitched Wednesday in the first game of a doubleheader against the Yankees, his first appearance since serving a two-game suspension for his part in a fight.

Howell entered the game in the bottom of the seventh and got the first out before giving up consecutive singles and being pulled. Both runners scored in a 6-4 loss.

Howell has a 2.81 ERA while pitching mostly in middle relief.

If Howell does not appeal the suspension, he will be eligible to return to the Dodgers bullpen Sunday against Pittsburgh.
