Neil Walker homers for third time in six games

(7/23/2014) Pirates second baseman Neil Walker homered for the third time in six games during a 12-7 win Tuesday against the Dodgers. Walker, who finished 2 for 4 with one double, one walk, two runs and three RBI, clubbed a solo home run off Josh Beckett in the second inning -- his 15th home run this season.

Walker is batting .344 with a .419 on-base percentage, .641 slugging percentage and 1.060 OPS in 18 July games. He also has one triple, four home runs, five doubles, 11 RBI, 16 runs, nine walks, 11 strikeouts and one stolen base in that span.

(7/20/2014) Pirates second baseman Neil Walker collected three hits for a second straight game and homered for the third time in eight games during a 5-3 win Sunday against the Rockies.

Walker capped the win with a solo home run offf Matt Belisle in the seventh inning. It was his 14th home run of the season.

Walker is batting .333 (19 for 57) with one triple, three home runs, four doubles, eight RBI and 13 runs in 16 July games.

(7/15/2014) Pirates second baseman Neil Walker hit a solo home run Sunday off Reds All-Star pitcher Johnny Cueto -- his 13th home run on the season and second in five games. Walker is batting .267 with a .346 on-base percentage, .511 slugging percentage, .857 OPS, one triple, two home runs, three doubles, six RBI, six walks and eight runs in 13 July games.

Last season, Walker hit 10 home runs after the All-Star break, which is the most home runs he's hit in the second half in his career. He also had 10 doubles, 27 RBI, 34 runs, 20 walks and 33 strikeouts in 61 games in the second half in 2013.

(7/10/2014) Pirates second baseman Neil Walker put together his second multi-hit game in three nights Wednesday, in a 5-2 loss to the Cardinals.

Walker scored the Pirates only two runs of the game, as he came around each time he made it on base. Walker finished the game 2 for 4 with a double and a solo home run, his first since June 3.

Walker is hitting .279/.347/.448 with 12 home runs and 39 RBI in 77 games this season.

(6/24/2014) As expected, Pirates second baseman Neil Walker (appendectomy) was activated off the 15-day disabled list prior to Tuesday's game at Tampa Bay. Walker was batting .312 with a .364 on-base percentage, .477 slugging percentage and .841 OPS in 28 games prior to going on the DL in early June.

(6/24/2014) Pirates infielder Neil Walker is on pace to be activated Tuesday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Walker was able to get through a simulated game Monday, after playing nine innings of a rehab game Sunday. Though the club is currently playing in an American League park, Walker is expected to get playing time at second base once he's activated. He's hitting .280/.353/.452 over 239 at-bats.

(6/23/2014) Pirates second baseman Neil Walker (appendectomy) participated in simulated game Monday in Tampa Bay, as he faced off against starting pitcher Gerrit Cole (shoulder), per the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Walker, who is expected to come off the disabled list Tuesday, went 1 for 4 with one walk and one strikeout on Sunday as he began a rehab assignment with Class A Bradenton.

Walker took four at-bats, two as a righty and two as a lefty during the game. He also fielded grounders and ran the bases. Walker remains on track to return from his appendectomy Tuesday.

(6/20/2014) Pirates infielder Neil Walker is set to begin a rehab assignment Sunday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Walker will likely workout or go through a simulated game Saturday. His rehab assignment will likely begin at Class A Bradenton. Walker had an appendectomy, and is expected to rejoin the club Tuesday. Depending on how his rehab game goes Sunday, he could play another rehab game Monday.

Provided he can stay healthy, he has a good shot of surpassing his career high of 16 home runs set in 2013. (6/4/2014) The consistency and production that has marked the efforts of Pirates second baseman Neil Walker since early May was in evidence Tuesday night in San Diego.

Walker opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the third inning. It raised his totals on the year to 11 home runs and 34 RBI. Walker has hit safely in all but six games since May 1 and has upped his batting average from .231 to .279 during that stretch.

(5/27/2014) Pirates second baseman Neil Walker has bounced back from a miserable April with a strong May. He extended his hitting streak to five games Monday and has reached base safely in 22 of 24 games this month.

Walker is hitting .312 (29 for 93) with four doubles, four homers, seven walks and a .402 on-base percentage in May. In April, Walker hit .235 with a .291 on-base percentage.

Walker got to work early, homering in his first at-bat. He managed to take a first-pitch fastball from Hiroki Kuroda out to right center for a solo shot. Walker also singled in the fifth inning. He finished 2 for 4, with one run scored and two RBI.

Walker hit a solo home run in the first inning , his eighth of the season. That was the only hit he managed, as he finished the game 1 for 4.

With his team trailing by one run in the bottom of the seventh, Walker stepped in against Carlos Martinez with two men on. On the fifth pitch of the at-bat, Walker ripped an 84 mph curveball out to right field for a three-run shot to give his club the lead. 

Walker finished the game 3 for 4, with two runs scored and four RBI.

(5/8/2014) Pirates second baseman Neil Walker has cooled off offensively following a torrid start. After batting .273 with a .582 slugging percentage and five home runs in his first 14 games, Walker is batting just .240 with a .320 slugging percentage and one home run in his last 20 games.

Walker has eight runs, eight walks, nine strikeouts and three doubles in his last 20 games. He's even been hit by a pitch seven times in that span.

It's the second consecutive three-hit performance for Walker, who came through with two outs and runners on first and second in the ninth inning Monday. He has hit .275/.326/.525 with six home runs and 12 RBI in 80 at-bats.
