by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4/15/2014) Pirates second baseman Neil Walker went 3 for 5 with two solo home runs in Monday's suspended game against the Reds, which eventually ended with an 8-7 Pirates win Tuesday.

Neil Walker lone offensive bright spot for Pirates

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4/12/2014) Second baseman Neil Walker was pretty much the entire offense for the Pirates on Friday night against the torrid Brewers.

Walker put his team on the board with a two-run homer in the seventh inning. He had already singled in the second - his two hits represented half of his team's total for the game. Walker is batting .256, but has been consistent. He has hit safely in all but two games this season.

Neil Walker plays the hero on opening day

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(3/31/2014) Pirates second baseman Neil Walker played the hero Monday against the Cubs.

Walker had a rough game early. He grounded into a double play in his first at-bat, grounded out in his second at-bat and flew out in his third at-bat. He made up for that in the tenth inning, however.

With the game tied 0-0, Walker battled reliever Carlos Villanueva through an eight pitch at-bat. On the eighth pitch, Walker drove a changeup out to right field for a walkoff home run.

Walker is looking to bounce back this season after hitting .251/.339/.418 in 478 at-bats last year.

Pirates coaches trying to help Neil Walker improve vs. lefties

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/9/2014) Pirates second baseman Neil Walker clubbed a career-high 16 home runs in 2013, but he hit just .251, which was a career low for a full season. Walker's struggles came against left-handed pitchers, as he hit .225 against them and all 16 of his homers came against right-handed pitchers.

"He just has to trust himself," Pirates hitting coach Jeff Branson said, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "He has to regain his confidence back from the right side."

Walker hit .295 in 2010 and .269 in 2011 against left-handed pitchers, so he has a track record of performing from the right side of the plate. The Pirates feel Walker just needs repetition to get back on track.

"There's no way around it," manager Clint Hurdle said. "One thing we're going to try and be more mindful of is, we're going to try and hunt as many left-handed pitchers as we can in spring training. Lefties back to back, three days in a row."

He did hit seven homers during the season's final month but couldn't replicate that power in the postseason.
