Yusmeiro Petit delivers six one-run innings vs. Cardinals

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/31/2014) Giants pitcher Yusmeiro Petit did a fine job filling in for the injured Matt Cain Saturday, giving up just one earned run on two hits and one walk in six innings while striking out five, but he was still charged with a loss in his team's 2-0 defeat against the Cardinals.

Petit (3-3) could have delivered at least one more inning, but a rain delay after the sixth caused him to be removed after just 74 pitches. His one run came on a fifth-inning home run by Cardinals rookie Oscar Taveras, who was making his major-league debut. Petit owns a 4.60 ERA and 43:9 K:BB ratio in 45 innings. His next start will come Friday against the Mets.

Matt Cain won't start Saturday, heading to DL

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5/30/2014) Giants starting pitcher Matt Cain will miss his second start in a row Saturday against the Cardinals due to a hamstring injury, the team announced Friday.

Cain's injury is not considered a serious long-term issue, but it is enough of a question that the team wants to give him some extra time off. Yusmeiro Petit will start in his place, and the San Francisco Chronicle reports the team will recall a player from Triple-A, indicating a DL trip is on the way for Cain.

If that happens Cain could be on the DL just until his next turn in the rotation, since they can make the move retroactive to May 22. Manager Bruce Bochy said he needs to discuss that with general manager Brian Sabean first, however.

Yusmeiro Petit takes the loss in spot start

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5/26/2014) Giants pitcher Yusmeiro Petit (3-2) made another spot start on Monday and was pegged with the loss, in an 8-4 defeat to the Cubs. The right-hander permitted four runs on six hits and no walks while striking out five in five innings of work.

Petit owns a 5.08 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP in 39 innings of work. If Matt Cain isn't ready to make his next start Saturday in St. Louis, the team will likely turn to Petit for another spot start.

Yusmeiro Petit scheduled to start Memorial Day

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/25/2014) Giants pitcher Yusmeiro Petit has replaced the injured Matt Cain as the probable starter for Monday's Memorial Day showdown with the Cubs, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Cain has been ruled out due to a hamstring strain. Petit has made three spot starts this season, filling in twice for Cain and once for Tim Hudson. On the year, he is 3-1 with a 4.76 ERA and 33:8 K:BB ratio in 34 innings.

Yusmeiro Petit hit hard in loss

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(5/17/2014) Giants starting pitcher Yusmeiro Petit did not impress in a spot start Friday, in a 7-5 loss to the Marlins.

Petit allowed runs in all but one of his five innings of work, beginning with a leadoff home run to Christian Yelich. He was charged with five runs -- four earned -- on seven hits in five innings, though he avoided any walks and struck out five on 90 pitches.

Petit hasn't had a consistent role this season, appearing in 12 games, including three as a starter. He has a 5.23 ERA in 31 innings of work, and will likely return to a  bullpen role with Tim Hudson expected to miss just one start.

Yusmeiro Petit gets the emergency start Friday

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(5/16/2014) Giants pitcher Yusmeiro Petit will start Friday against the Marlins.

Petit is taking the place of Tim Hudson, who is dealing with an injured hip. Petit has moved in and out of the bullpen this year, posting a 4.85 ERA over 26 innings. He's posted a 6.97 ERA in his two starts.

Yusmeiro Petit gets pummeled by Pirates in no-decision

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5/5/2014) Giants pitcher Yusmeiro Petit got pummeled by the Pirates on Monday, but somehow managed to escape his outing with a no-decision. Making his second start of the season, Petit allowed eight runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out four over 4 1/3 innings.

Petit has allowed eight earned runs over his last two starts (10 1/3 innings). His ERA ballooned from 2.61 to 5.04 after Monday's start. He'll likely return to the bullpen once Matt Cain is activated from the disabled list this weekend.

Yusmeiro Petit gets the nod again

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(5/5/2014) With Matt Cain (finger) on the disabled list, Giants pitcher Yusmeiro Petit will make another spot start Monday in Pittsburgh. Petit tossed six scoreless innings last Tuesday against the Padres and sports a 2.61 ERA in 20 2/3 innings.

Yusmeiro Petit likely to make spot-start Monday

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5/4/2014) With Matt Cain on the disabled list, Giants reliever Yusmeiro Petit will likely make the spot-start Monday night in Pittsburgh, Comcast SportsNet Bay Area reports.

Petit made a spot-start for Cain on Tuesday, allowing just three hits over six scoreless innings while striking out four against the Padres. He owns a 2.61 ERA and 20:4 K:BB ratio in 20 2/3 innings.

Yusmeiro Petit makes most of opportunity in win Tuesday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4/30/2014) Named the starter of Tuesday's game against the Padres after scheduled starter Matt Cain was scratched with an injury, Giants pitcher Yusmeiro Petit surrendered just three hits over six scoreless innings while striking out four and walking none in his team's 6-0 win over the Padres.

Petit (2-1) was excellent on short notice in his second start of the season, limiting the Padres to two singles and a double, with all three hits coming with no runners on base. Cain is expected to be fine for his next start, so Petit will return to the bullpen moving forward. He owns a 2.61 ERA and 20:4 K:BB ratio in 20 2/3 innings.

Matt Cain scratched Tuesday with cut finger

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4/29/2014) Giants pitcher Matt Cain was scratched from Tuesday's scheduled start against the Padres after cutting his right index finger, the team announced.

Yusmeiro Petit is making Tuesday's start in place of Cain, who won't need stitches. If the team keeps him on regular rest, Cain could make his next start Monday against the Pirates.

Yusmeiro Petit follows up gem with dud in Thursday loss

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4/11/2014) The first back-to-back performance this season by Giants reliever Yusmeiro Petit did not end as well as it began.

One day after throwing two shutout innings and striking out out four, he took the loss Thursday night against Arizona. Petit gave up singles to Cliff Pennington and Tony Campana in the 10th inning to turn a 5-5 tie into a 6-5 defeat. Petit allowed both Diamondbacks to steal bases as well.

Yusmeiro Petit strikes out seven in four scoreless innings Friday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/22/2014) Giants pitcher Yusmeiro Petit struck out seven batters while giving up two hits in four scoreless innings in his team's 3-0 win over the A's Friday.

Petit drew the start Friday with Matt Cain pitching in a minors game and delivered a fantastic outing. He was roughed up early this spring, but Petit given up an earned run in 9 2/3 innings over his last four appearances.

Yusmeiro Petit flops in spring training opener

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(2/26/2014) Giants reliever Yusmeiro Petit is fighting for a spot on the roster in spring training, but he did not put his best foot forward to open the exhibition schedule.

Petit received the start in the team's first spraining training game Wednesday, and struggled to get out of the first inning. He was tagged for four runs -- three earned -- on five hits, without recording a strikeout in his lone inning of work.

Petit posted a 3.56 ERA with 47 strikeouts and just 11 walks in 48 innings for the Giants last season, with seven of his eight appearances coming as a starter. Assuming he can crack the roster as a long reliever, Petit will likely be in line for spot starts in the event of injuries.

Yusmeiro Petit could fill role as long reliever

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/16/2014) Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Sunday one of the three remaining spots in the bullpen will go to a long reliever, according to the San Jose Mercury News. Yusmeiro Petit appears to be a favorite for the job.

"You have to put a lot of stock in the job he did," Bochy said. "His stuff was crisp and the breaking ball was better."

Giants, Yusmeiro Petit agree to one-year deal

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(1/17/2014) The Giants and pitcher Yusmeiro Petit have avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year deal worth $845,000.

Petit is in his first year of arbitration eligibility. He went 4-1 with a 3.56 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 47:11 K:BB ratio in 48 innings last season.

Yusmeiro Petit roughed up in final start

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(9/28/2013) Giants pitcher Yusmeiro Petit ran into trouble as he took the loss in his final outing of the season Saturday against the Padres. He allowed five runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out two over 3 2/3 innings of a 9-3 defeat.

Petit allowed three-plus runs in three of his final four starts. He finished the year with a 3.56 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP in 48 innings pitched in the majors.

Barry Zito to make farewell start

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(9/24/2013) Giants starter Barry Zito is expected to receive a farewell start at some point this week, most likely Saturday against San Diego, manager Bruce Bochy told Comcast SportsNet Bay Area Tuesday. Yusmeiro Petit was originally scheduled for Saturday.

The Giants are expected to decline Zito’s $18 million option and choose a $7 million buyout, which will end his seven-year tenure with San Francisco. He is 4-11 with a 5.91 ERA in 28 appearances (24 starts) this season.

Yusmeiro Petit sharp in possible final start

by Al Melchior | Data Analyst
(9/22/2013) Yusmeiro Petit delivered 6 1/3 strong innings in what could have been his last start of the season for the Giants, holding the Yankees to a single run on Sunday. Petit struck out seven batters and walked only two, and aside from Mark Reynolds' solo home run, allowed just four singles and a double.

Because he was not involved in the decision, Petit's record remained at 4-0, while his ERA fell to 2.84. He could start again on Saturday against the Padres, but the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Barry Zito could be brought back to the rotation to make that start.

Yusmeiro Petit collects fourth win vs. Mets

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(9/17/2013) Giants pitcher Yusmeiro Petit (4-0) collected his fourth win of the season Tuesday night against the Mets. The right-hander surrendered four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out one over six innings of an 8-5 victory.

Petit has allowed seven runs over his last 11 2/3 innings pitched. He is scheduled to make his next start Sunday against the Yankees in New York.

Yusmeiro Petit strikes out seven in no-decision

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(9/11/2013) Making his first start since coming within one out of a perfect game, Giants pitcher Yusmeiro Petit didn't factor into the decision in his team's 4-3 win over the Rockies Wednesday, giving up three earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven in 5 2/3 innings.

The three runs given up Wednesday represent Petit's highest run total over five appearances with the Giants this season. He takes a 3-0 record, 2.53 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 37:6 K:BB ratio into Tuesday's matchup with the Mets.

Owners still need caution with Yusmeiro Petit

by Al Melchior | Data Analyst
(9/9/2013) Yusmeiro Petit fell one pitch short of a perfect game last Friday, but it was actually just the latest in a series of strong performances for the Giants. He has looked strong in each of his four appearances this season, but Fantasy owners still have to pick their spots when figuring out when to start the 28-year-old journeyman.

Though his average fastball velocity sits in the upper 80s, Petit can provide strikeouts, and he's a good control pitcher, too. What has gotten him into trouble over his career is a strong tendency towards allowing flyballs, and home runs in particular have been a problem. He has already escaped starts at Coors and Chase Fields without allowing a gopherball, but eventually, Petit's luck will run out.

It probably won't be this week, when Petit faces the Rockies at home. Next week could be a very different story, when Petit hits the road to make starts against the Mets and Yankees. The latter of those two outings could be disastrous. Petit's not a bad use of a rotation spot this week, especially in deeper leagues, but don't plan on leaving him active for the longer haul.

Yusmeiro Petit falls one strike shy of a perfect game

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(9/7/2013) Before Friday, Giants pitcher Yusmeiro Petit had only thrown 22 innings in the majors since the start of the 2010 season. The 28-year-old veteran fell one strike shy of a perfect game, but still managed to come away with his third win of the season against the Diamondbacks.

He lost his perfect bid with two outs in the ninth as Eric Chavez ripped a single to right field that dropped in front of a diving Hunter Pence. He forced A.J. Pollock to ground out for the final out of the game. The right-hander struck out seven and allowed one for the complete game 3-0 shutout win.

Petit has won three consecutive decisions and has not surrendered more than two runs in a start this season. He is scheduled to make his next start Wednesday at home against Colorado. He allowed two runs over six innings pitched in his previous meeting against the Rockies on Aug. 27.

Yusmeiro Petit Ks 10 in win over D-Backs

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(9/1/2013) Giants pitcher Yusmeiro Petit tossed a quality start and struck out 10 as he earned his second win of the season Sunday afternoon against the Diamondbacks. The right-hander surrendered two runs on seven hits and one walk over six innings of a 8-2 victory.

Petit has allowed six earned runs combined over his first three starts (17 1/3 innings). He'll get another crack at the Diamondbacks Friday at home.

Barry Zito could be skipped Sunday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(8/28/2013) The Giants have yet to announce a starter for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks, leaving open the possibility that Barry Zito could be skipped in the rotation, MLB.com reports. The Giants have the option of pitching Yusmeiro Petit on regular rest Sunday if they want to give Zito a break.

Zito has given up 11 earned runs in 7 2/3 innings in his last two games, giving him a 5.81 ERA and 1.74 WHIP in 124 innings.
