Blue Jays release Ramon Santiago, reassign Daric Barton

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(3/30/2015) The Blue Jays trimmed their roster by two on Monday, SportsNet reported

The Jays released infielder Ramon Santiago . The 35-year-old Santiago was signed as a free agent in the offseason and hit .417 in spring training.

Blue Jays' Barton hoping his glove wins him a spot

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(3/6/2015) Blue Jays first baseman Daric Barton is hoping his glove can win him a spot on the 25-man roster, according to the Toronto Sun.

Barton isn't much of a power hitter, but gets strong marks for his defense at first. Manager John Gibbons is well aware of Barton's skills. "One thing that put Daric on the map was that he was such a disciplined hitter and a great defender," Gibbons said. He added that the first baseman is involved in a large chunk of plays, so defense at the position is probably more important than people realize.

With that said, Barton may need a trade to make the opening day roster. As currently constructed, the Blue Jays may carry three catchers. If the team retains Dioner Navarro, Barton could find himself in the minors.

The 29-year-old Barton hit .158 over 57 at-bats last year.

Daric Barton making most of latest chance

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(9/23/2013) The Athletics' Daric Barton, who has gotten looks as the team's primary first baseman dating back to 2007, has thrived in the role since returning from the minors Aug. 26, according to the San Jose Mercury News, batting .319 (23 for 72) with two homers and an .816 OPS in 24 games.

"Daric has really matured," general manager Billy Beane said. "He had a hard time when he was younger handling things when they didn't go right. He'd get frustrated with himself. Now he's taking things and accepting that it's not always going to be perfect."

Barton, who has started 12 of the team's last 14 games, has more or less locked up a spot on the postseason roster. The 28-year-old hit .297 with seven homers and an .853 OPS in 110 games at Triple-A Sacramento.

Daric Barton clears waivers

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(4/4/2013) Athletics first baseman Daric Barton has cleared waivers and has been assigned to Triple-A Sacramento.
