Bernadina hit .153/.286/.203 in 59 at-bats with the Reds earlier this season. He owns a .246/.380/.351 line in 57 at-bats with Albuquerque.

The 30-year-old Bernadina, who declined an assignment from Cincinnati on June 27, has been given just eight-at bats since May 30 and hasn't had a hit. He is 9 for 59 on the season.

(5/30/2014) In the wake of Joey Votto's injury, the Reds have been forced to scramble to find answers at first base. The Votto-sized hole in the lineup was filled for at least one night by outfielder Roger Bernadina Friday against the Diamondbacks, who had never started a game at first base before.

"[Manager Bryan Price] asked me if I could play first base and I said 'yeah.' I did it in the past and fielded a couple of ground balls and stuff like that," Bernadina told MLB.com Friday. "I'll try to do my part to help the team."

Bernadina last played first base in exhibition games when he was a prospect, but had never played a regulation game there. He acquired a first baseman's mitt in recent days and began working out there.

Bernadina has seen little plaing time this season, hitting .160/.300/.200 in 50 at-bats.

(5/5/2014) Reds outfielder Roger Bernadina is expected to replace Jay Bruce on Tuesday, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. The team will place Bruce on the disabled list and recall Bernadina from Triple-A Louisville prior to Tuesday's game against the Red Sox.

Bernadina was designated fro assignment on Sunday and sent outright to Triple-A on Tuesday. He is hitting .143 with one RBI in 28 at-bats this season for the Reds.

(3/30/2014) The Reds have added outfielder Roger Bernadina , infielder Ramon Santiago and pitcher Trevor Bell to the opening day roster. 

All three players had their contracts purchased from Triple-A Sunday. Bernadina tore up spring ball, hitting .413 with three home runs. Bell posted a 1.04 ERA over 8 2/3 innings. Santiago didn't perform well at the plate, but is expected to be an asset with the glove at a number of infield spots.

Bernadina will make $1 million if he can break camp with the club. He has opt out clauses in his deal if he's not up, but it's not clear when he can opt out yet. He hit .181 in 227 at-bats.

Bernadina will be invited to big league camp. He'll compete for a spot on the 25-man roster during spring training. Bernadina hit .181 in 227 at-bats last year.

(10/19/2013) Outfielder Roger Bernadina, who was recently outrighted to Triple-A by the Philadelphia Phillies, has elected instead to become a free agent. 

The 29-year-old Bernadina played 112 games this season and hit .181 with 10 doubles, four homers and 11 RBI over 227 at-bats. He also stole four bases. 

Bernadina will likely sign a minor league deal somewhere and compete for a job in spring training next season.

Nationals trying to 'improve' team for '2013 and beyond'

(7/28/2013) Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said Saturday he's been talking with teams as the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline nears, according to The Washington Times.

"We’ve got a lot of trade discussions," Rizzo said. "We’ve received calls, we’ve made calls. I’m not going to go much more into it than that other than we’re going to do what we do at every trade deadline: we’re going to try to improve this ballclub for 2013 and beyond."

Rizzo did mention he would like to upgrade the team's bench. With left-handed hitters Chad Tracy and Roger Bernadina batting under .200, the Nationals might look to add a left-handed hitter to their bench.

"If we could tweak or improve certain spots on the bench, I think that would be one place that we would attack," Rizzo said. "But we’ve got ourselves a pretty talented group of guys that we’re committed to and we like where we’re at."

Bernadina was hitless in two at-bats while drawing a walk in a 7-1 loss. Bernadina is hitting .177 on the season with a .539 OPS in 113 at-bats.

(6/20/2013) Nationals outfielder Roger Bernadina was able to play in the field Thursday against the Rockies, as the eye issue that forced him to sit out Wednesday was not deemed serious. According to MLB.com, Bernadina is not expected to miss any more time moving forward.  

"He got drops for an allergy or something; it looked like he had something in his eye," Johnson said. "His eyes were so bad, he couldn't find the doctor's office. He was supposed to be there at 2 p.m., and it was 4 p.m., and he still hadn't gotten there."
