Yankees add four more to major-league roster

(9/2/2014) The Yankees purchased the contracts of pitcher Rich Hill and outfielder Chris Young from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Tuesday and added them to the active roster. Both players were added to the 40-man roster for the final month of the season as well. 

The team also signed outfielder Antoan Richardson and pitcher Chaz Roe to major-league contracts and added them to the active roster Tuesday, the team announced.

(8/29/2014) The Yankees designated pitcher Rich Hill for assignment Friday, in order to clear a spot on the active roster for Josh Outman.

Hill appeared in six games for the Yankees as a lefty specialist, allowing just two hits in 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

(7/17/2014) The Yankees have signed pitcher Rich Hill to a minor-league deal, according to the LoHud Yankees Blog. 

With the move, Hill rejoins former pitching coach Larry Rothschild. Hill has struggled with his command over his career. He was released by the Angels in early July.

Hill appeared in just two games with the club, allowing one earned run and three walks without recording an out. He's had major control issues the past few seasons, which has led to his decline.

(3/7/2014) Red Sox lefty Rich Hill will begin his spring training with a heavy heart after the death of his infant son, per the Detroit Free Press. The boy was two months old before losing his lift to multiple physical problems.

Hill is coming off a difficult season in which he compiled a 6.28 ERA in 63 appearances with Cleveland. He struggled with his control as a specialist against left-handed batters, walking 29 in 38 2/3 innings.

Hill has been dealing with a family issue this spring, and has been excused from camp by the team. Hill signed a minor-league deal with the club during the offseason. He posted a 6.28 ERA in 38 2/3 innings last year. He'll compete for a spot in the team's bullpen.

(3/1/2014) Red Sox reliever Rich Hill has yet to report to spring training, but manager John Farrell told reporters Saturday the team is excusing his absence. Hill is dealing with a "serious family issue," and does not have any timeline for joining the club.

Hill was signed to a minor-league deal in the offseason with a chance to fight for a possible bullpen spot. He last spent 25 games with the Red Sox in 2012, posting a 1.83 ERA.

Hill is set to make $840,000 next season. He can earn an additional $500,000 based on incentives. The contract has two opt out opportunity. If Hill is not on the major-league roster by May 15 or June 30, he can choose to become a free-agent. Hill posted a 6.28 ERA in 38 2/3 innings last year.

(6/25/2013) Indians reliever Rich Hill has allowed one run in his last seven appearances (four innings), lowering his ERA from 8.44 to 7.20. The Indians are trying to get Hill back to his early season form, when he featured a higher arm slot and more deception, which led to a 2.70 ERA in his first 10 appearances.

"Richie is throwing the ball, the last couple times out, pretty good," manager Terry Francona said, per MLB.com. "Getting him on a roll would be really helpful to our bullpen."

(6/4/2013) The Indians are working with reliever Rich Hill to raise his arm slot to where it was during the spring, MLB.com reports Tuesday. It has been lower lately. 

Hill has a 22.85 ERA over his last 4 1/3 innings. During his recent slump, Hill has thrown 69 percent strikes. That may be a solid rate, but a lower arm angle may have hindered his deception. He's allowed 12 hits over his last 4 1/3.

Hill has pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings over six appearances so far this spring. "To have news like this is obviously good," Hill told MLB.com. "It's just getting ready for the season now. That's the key thing. You can lock into your routine a little bit more going forward."
