Mets officially sign Scott Rice to minor-league deal

(12/12/2014) The Mets officially announced the signing of reliever Scott Rice on Friday, according to ESPN. Rice signed a minor-league deal with an invite to spring training. He underwent elbow surgery in July, but is expected to be ready at the start of the season.

Rice came back on a minor-league deal, and will receive an invite to spring training. He had elbow surgery in July, and was removed from the 40-man roster in October.

Scott Rice , Josh Satin, Buddy Carlyle and Dana Eveland all accepted their assignments and will report to Triple-A. All four players could have declined the offer and become free agents, but opted to remain with the club.

(7/22/2014) Mets reliever Scott Rice, who has been in the minors since mid-June, will have season-ending elbow surgery Wednesday in New York, according to Newsday. Rice will have a bone spur removed, but he will also have a nerve relocated, which will extend the rehab process from 6-8 weeks to four months.

Rice has posted a 5.93 ERA as a lefty specialist out of the bullpen, with 13 strikeouts and 12 walks in 13 2/3 innings of work in 32 appearances.

Rice (0-1) allowed a single to Christian Yelich to start the ninth and was pulled for Gonzalez Germen, who allowed Yelich to score on a run-scoring single to Casey McGehee. Rice permitted one hit and one run, as his ERA rose from 4.91 to 6.14 on the year.

Rice has been out since September 3 with the injury, and the surgery was expected. Rice tweeted he underwent surgery, and tweeted a picture from the hospital. He has a 3.71 ERA in 51 innings.

"I know that each and every day he's had treatment," manager Terry Collins said. "Last week, it started to get worse. He came in before each game and got treatment. The other day in Atlanta, he came to me right at the start of the game and said, 'Listen, I'm OK. I'll keep it loose.'

(8/6/2013) Mets manager Terry Collins said Tuesday he will mix and match at closer while Bobby Parnell (neck) is on the 15-day disabled list. David Aardsma will be in the mix for save chances, and Collins hinted left-handed reliever Scott Rice could be used in certain matchups.

Collins also mentioned LaTroy Hawkins, Gonzalez Germen and Carlos Torres as right-handed closer options.

(5/16/2013) Mets pitcher Scott Rice spent 14 seasons in the minors before making the team in 2013, and he's received a ton of work despite his limited major-league experience. 

Rice has made a major-league high 23 appearances this season. If he continues being used at this rate, Rice would break the Mets' record for appearances in a season. Manager Terry Collins has been happy with Rice's production, saying "Scott’s done a great job, he really has. So in those situations, he’s going to have to be the guy that steps up, and either gets his groundball or strikeout."

In 18 1/3 innings this season, Rice has a 3.44 ERA and a 3.84 FIP.

ESPN predicted one of the spots will go to Josh Edgin, while Pedro Feliciano, Robert Carson and Scott Rice vie for the other left-handed role in the bullpen.

ESPN also reported this news likely means there will only be room for either Greg Burke or Jeurys Familia in the team's rotation.
