(10/15/2007) The Pirates claimed outfielder Kevin Thompson off waivers Monday and designated utilityman Matt Kata for assignment. Thompson was designated for assignment by the Yankees on Sept. 1 and claimed on waivers a week later by the Athletics. He was subsequently dropped from Oakland's roster. Kata hit .250 with one homer and 10 RBI in 47 games with Pittsburgh this season after being claimed from the Rangers.
