Tony Abreu sent outright to Triple-A Fresno

(8/1/2014) The Giants sent second baseman Tony Abreu outright to Triple-A Fresno. Abreu appeared in three games with the Giants last season before he was designated for assignment. He was hitting .281/.329/.434 in 64 games at Fresno.

(7/29/2014) The Giants announced several roster moves Tuesday, with first baseman Travis Ishikawa and outfielder Juan Perez joining the team from Triple-A Fresno.

To make room for the two batters, the team has designated second baseman Tony Abreu for assignment and optioned first baseman Adam Duvall.

Ishikawa hit .206/.263/.382 in 34 at-bats with the Pirates before being released in April. The Giants picked him up a few days later, and he has hit .271/.349/.446 with 11 home runs and 45 RBI in 240 at-bats with Fresno.

Perez has had a few stints with the Giants this season, hitting .156/.208/.267 in 45 at-bats. He has performed much better with Fresno, hitting .333/.397/.496 with three home runs, 17 RBI and seven stolen bases in 117 at-bats.


Giants add Dan Uggla, Tony Abreu to active roster

(7/25/2014) The Giants called up a pair of infielders from Triple-A Fresno, as Dan Uggla and Tony Abreu were added to the roster Friday.

Uggla was signed by the Giants in recent days after the Braves released him. Uggla was hitting just .162/.241/.231 in 48 games with the Braves, and appeared in just two games with Fresno before getting the call. He is in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Dodgers.

Abreu last appeared in the majors with the Giants last season, when he hit .268 in 52 games. He was hitting .281/.329/.434 in 64 games at Fresno. 


Tony Abreu opts out of minor-league deal, becomes free agent

(7/21/2014) Infielder Tony Abreu has opted out of his minor-league contract with the Giants, according to the team's Triple-A website. Abreu is now a free agent. He batted .281 with six homers and 29 RBI in 64 games for the Fresno Grizzlies.

Abreu will report to Triple-A Fresno and wait for a spot to open on the major-league roster. He hit .268/.301/.442 with two home runs and 14 RBI in 138 at-bats last season before going 7 for 39 this spring.

Abreu, who is eligible to return from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, is recovering from knee bursitis. However, he is likely to play several more games with Fresno before being activated.

(8/11/2013) Giants infielder Tony Abreu has had the beginning of his Triple-A rehab assignment pushed back one day to Monday, MLB.com reports. He is on the 15-day disabled list due to left knee bursitis and is first eligible to return Tuesday.

"We'll keep an eye on him and we'll have him ready as soon as we think we need some help up here," manager Bruce Bochy told MLB.com Sunday.

Abreu has hit .266/.306/.418 with one home run and seven RBI in 79 at-bats.

Abreu went 0 for 2 with a strikeout. Manager Bruce Bochy told MLB.com that there is no timetable for his return.

Abreu, who is on the 15-day disabled list, is working his way back from a quadriceps injury. He was claimed off waivers from the Royals in early February and missed much of spring training due to injuries. He hit .257/.284/.357 with one home run and 15 RBI in 70 at-bats last season with Kansas City.

Abreu made his Cactus League debut on Monday against the Texas Rangers as he started at third base and hit second. Abreu went 1 for 2 in the game to start off his spring on the right foot. He is hoping to win a backup infield job this spring.
