News: Diamondbacks reliever Takashi Saito, on the 15-day disabled list with a calf injury, threw a bullpen session on Tuesday, reports MLB.com. It was the first time Saito has thrown since suffering a setback while on a rehab assignment with Class A Visalia back on April 21.
Analysis: Saito reported no issues after his outing, but still has a ton of hurdles to get over before he is ready to return. He will likely need at least a few more rehab outings before that happens, so Fantasy owners shouldn't be expecting to see him back with the Diamondbacks anytime soon. Keep an eye on his status moving forward. Still, as a middle reliever, Saito will have just marginal Fantasy appeal when healthy.
News: Diamondbacks pitcher Takashi Saito suffered a setback on Friday in his recovery from a calf injury that will likely delay his debut. After throwing a scoreless inning for Class A Visalia on Thursday, Saitos injured calf stiffened up on Friday during drills, pushing back his rehabilitation. "He's on the shelf," manager Kirk Gibson told MLB.com. "It's a setback. He's not ready. We'll bring him back here, keep his arm going and get the calf healed. It's not healed now."
Analysis: Saito was on the verge of returning from the injury, however he will now return back to Phoenix for further rehabilitation and evaluation by the teams training staff. He was expected to re-join the bullpen as a middle reliever, so even if he does get back soon, he is not worth owning in any Fantasy formats.
News: Diamondbacks reliever Takashi Saito allowed one hit in his rehab assignment for Class A Visalia on Friday en route to a scoreless inning. Manager Kirk Gibson told MLB.com that Saito will pitch again Saturday before being re-evaluated. Saito is on the 15-day disabled list due to a calf injury.
Analysis: While Saito is valuable to the Arizona bullpen, he doesn't have as much value in Fantasy. Even when he's healthy, Saito isn't worth owning in deeper NL-only leagues that reward holds. Continue to ignore him.
News: MLB.com reports Diamondbacks reliever Takashi Saito, on the 15-day disabled list due to a calf injury, worked one inning at extended spring training on Friday. He threw 10 pitches and reached as high as 90mph with his fastball.
Analysis: Saito might need just one more rehab outing before being activated off the DL so owners should keep an eye on his progress going forward. The right-hander has compiled a career 2.18 ERA over six season in the majors but since he will not be in line for save chances once healthy, plan on ignoring Saito in all but the deepest of leagues that utlize middle men.
News: Diamondbacks reliever Takashi Saito threw a bullpen session on Tuesday and is expected to throw an extended spring training game soon, according to the Arizona Republic. Saito is on the 15-day disabled list with a calf injury. Saito, who is eligible to come off the shelf on Monday, could need more time. Manager Kirk Gibson told MLB.com that Saito will need to get comfortable covering first base before he can progress. "He really didn't lose a lot with his arm through the whole process," Gibson said. "He continued to throw through the whole ordeal."
Analysis: Saito should give the D-Backs some valuable innings out of the 'pen this year, but he doesn't hold a lot of Fantasy value. Saito is more of a Rotisserie Fantasy reliever when active because of his ability to post a low ERA and WHIP. Owners should leave him on waivers until he returns.
News: Diamondbacks reliever Takashi Saito was placed on the 15-day DL on Wednesday with a calf injury.
Analysis: Saito is hoping to spend the minimal amount of time on the DL. He's a big addition to the Diamondbacks bullpen. However, he won't see regular save chances, so Saito is more of a Rotisserie Fantasy reliever when active because of his ability to post a low ERA and WHIP.
News: According to MLB.com, Arizona pitcher Takashi Saito tweaked his calf on Tuesday and will be re-evaluated on Wednesday. Depending on the severity of the injury, a spot on the roster could open up.
Analysis: Saito signed with the D-Backs back in December. He posted a 2.03 ERA and 1.13 WHIP over 30 appearances for the Brewers in 2011. Saito was projected as bullpen depth and isn't in line for saves. Fantasy owners should ignore him in most formats to start the year.
News: The Diamondbacks agreed to terms with free agent RP Takashi Saito on Monday, according to Jon Heyman. Saito had a 2.03 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 30 appearances for the Brewers last season.
Analysis: Saito has had trouble staying healthy over the last couple seasons, but he still has good stuff at age 41 and could emerge as a serviceable middle reliever for Fantasy owners in deeper Rotisserie leagues at some point in 2012. He should probably go undrafted, though.
News: According to FOXSports.com, pitcher Takashi Saito is drawing some interest from six teams. Milwaukee, the team he pitched for in 2011, is one of those teams. Saito finished the season with a 2.03 ERA and 4-2 record for the Brewers.
Analysis: Milwaukee is looking to bolster its bullpen, and retaining Saito is definitely a priority for them. He'll be a middle reliever no matter where he lands, but could get some holds if he stays with the Brewers. Fantasy owners that plan on being in leagues that value true middle men are the only ones that should be watching Saito this offseason.
News: Milwaukee RP Takashi Saito got into Saturday's game against Florida, his first appearance since Sept. 18. He struck out one batter in his inning of work and threw 14 pitches. Saito had been dealing with a sore right calf and wasn't available for the Brewers for the past week.
Analysis: Saito owns a 1.82 ERA on the year and has fought through injuries all season. He's valuable to the Brewers, but in Fantasy leagues he's not worth much. Owners should continue to view him as a low-end option in formats that value true middle men.
News: Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said on Tuesday that RP Takashi Saito was unavailable for Monday's series opener against the Cubs due to a sore right calf.
Analysis: Saito has a 1.90 ERA so far this season but has been limited to just 27 appearances due to injuries. While he is a viable middle-relief option, his role leaves the right-hander as a marginal Fanatsy option, even when healthy.
News: After recording his fifth consecutive scoreless outing Tuesday against the Dodgers, Milwaukee RP Takashi Saito said he is finally starting to feel healthy again. The right-hander spent three months on the disabled list with various injuries. "Whenever I'm pitching, I don't think about injuries, even though all of my injuries have happened while pitching," Saito told MLB.com through his interpreter. "Right now, I feel great," Saito said.
Analysis: Saito (4-1) is part of a solid Brewers bullpen that also includes Francisco Rodriguez and John Axford, who is among the National League leaders in saves. He is now carrying a solid 2.20 ERA this season. "I've been lucky that all of the bullpens I've been a part of have been amazing bullpens, and this one is right up there. This one is special," Saito told MLB.com. Consider Saito a decent option in deeper NL-only Fantasy formats.
News: Milwaukee RP Takashi Saito (2-1) worked around trouble in the eighth inning while giving up a hit and two walks during the Brewers' 2-1 loss at San Francisco on Sunday. Saito benefited from a double play after a leadoff walk to help lower his earned-run average to 3.00 this year.
Analysis: Since returning from the disabled list in early July, Saito has made seven appearances and issued four walks. The right-hander has permitted just one run during the stretch and posted two holds. The 41-year-old seems to be a risky option out of the bullpen at this stage in his career, which hurts his Fantasy value. For now, he should be viewed as a low-end option in deeper NL-only formats.
News: Milwaukee activated RP Takashi Saito from the 15-day disabled list on Saturday. Saito spent nearly three months sidelined with a several of injuries, including an oblique strain and upper back tightness. The Brewers optioned RP Tim Dillard to Triple-A Nashville to make room.
Analysis: Saito made just two appearances this season before landing on the disabled list in early April. Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke said he will ease the right-hander back into the bullpen and provide him a role in the late innings. Fantasy owners should consider him a low-end option in NL-only formats while he builds back his strength.
News: Brewers RP Takashi Saito was back with the team on Friday and is expected to be activated from the 60-day disabled lists soon. Saito has been out since early April due to a strained left hamstring and strained muscle in his left side. "This is the thing: [Saito has] had a rough start to the season," manager Ron Roenicke told MLB.com. "He wants to get activated. He's done everything we've asked him to do. He's healthy now, he's feeling good and we need to see how much this guy's going to help us for the rest of the season. He's very important, I think, for our bullpen and what we do. I agree with you -- the timing might not be right to activate him. But the timing is right for him, and we feel the sooner we get him back here before the All-Star break, the sooner we can see where he's going to fit, what role he's going to be in, how healthy he's going to be -- he says he feels great now."
Analysis: Despite his manager's praise, Saito won't be bringing much to the Fantasy table this season. He may be close to returning to the bullpen, but owners should view him as more of an NL-only option. The 41-year-old will likely be used in a seventh or eighth inning role once healthy, and probably won't see many save opportunities.
News: Brewers RP Takashi Saito struck out two batters in his inning of work on Tuesday night in his Triple-A rehab outing. He's on the 60-day disabled list with a hamstring injury and the team said he could return for the series at Minnesota that starts Friday.Saito has been out since early April due to a strained left hamstring and strained muscle in his left side.
Analysis: It seems like Saito will be activated this weekend, so owners that value true middle men should stay tuned. If he comes off the DL and pitches well, he may be worth using in some NL-only formats. The 41-year-old will likely be used in a seventh or eighth inning role once healthy, and probably won't see many save opportunities.
News: Brewers general manager Doug Melvin told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel on Monday that Takashi Saito, on the 60-day disabled list, will be re-evaluated after his next rehab outing with Triple-A Nashville. Were going to have to make another move when (Takashi) Saito comes off the DL," Melvin said. "Hes going to pitch Tuesday in Nashville and then well re-evaluate him on Wednesday. He could be back soon. Saito has been out since early April due to a strained left hamstring and strained muscle in his left side.
Analysis: Saito has made five scoreless appearances during his rehab stint, striking out five in 4 2/3 innings, and appears to nearing a return for the Brewers. Fantasy owners should continue to monitor his progress to see when he might be activated. The 41-year-old will likely be used in a seventh or eighth inning role once healthy but since he does not stand to see many save opportunities, continue to view Saito as more of a low-end option in NL-only formats that utilize middle men.
News: Brewers RP Takashi Saito threw a scoreless inning of relief Thursday night for Triple-A Nashville. Saito, who has been on the disabled list since early April with a strained left hamstring and then a strained muscle in his left side, reported no problems during his 11-pitch outing. "He didn't really throw enough pitches so we had him go down to the bullpen afterward and throw some more, but it went well," manager Ron Roenicke told the Milwaukee Journal Constitution. "He's scheduled to pitch again Sunday and he might pitch again Tuesday. And then we'll see where we are" in terms of returning Saito to the active roster."
Analysis: Roenicke also added when Saito does return to Milwaukee, the he would likely be used in a seventh or eighth inning role. However, the injury prone right-hander still has to get through two more rehab innings before that happens, so Fantasy owners aren't out of the woods just yet. Continue to monitor his progress moving froward. Although, because he most likely won't be in line for many save chances once healthy, his value will be limited to deeper NL-only formats that reward true middle men when he does return.
News: Brewers RP Takashi Saito appears one step closer to a rehabilitation assignment, reports MLB.com. Saito, who is currently on the 60-day disabled list, received rave reviews from pitching coach Rick Kranitz on his session. "Saito had an outstanding bullpen. [Pitching coach] Rick Kranitz said that's the best he's seen him throw the ball, so we're excited about that," manager Ron Roenicke said. "The oblique felt real good today, so, right now, we're planning on him either going out Thursday and Sunday and pitching, or Friday and Monday." Saito underwent an MRI on Monday after he exited his start in Triple-A Nashville last Friday when he felt tightness in his oblique.
Analysis: Saito will no attempt to go on another rehab assignment over the next few days, which has been problematic for the veteran thus far. Manager Ron Roenicke said he is still unsure whether Saito will pitch with Class A Wisconsin or head back to Triple-A Nashville, so Fantasy owners should continue to monitor the situation moving forward. However, because he most likely won't be in line for many save chances once healthy, his value will be limited to deeper NL-only formats that reward true middle men moving forward.
News: MLB.com reports that Brewers RP Takashi Saito, on the 60-day disabled list, traveled to Milwaukee on Sunday to undergo an MRI on his oblique. The right-hander felt tightness in his side during his rehab appearance with Triple-A Nashville on Friday. "They can't find much, so I think he's fine," manager Ron Roenicke said. "He still feels a little tightness there in his oblique, and I think he's concerned about it."
Analysis: Saito's rehab assignment has been postponed until they figure what's exactly wrong with his oblique so Fantasy owners should keep an eye on his status over the next few days. He has been out since early April as he has endured several setbacks in his recovery. The 31-year-old has proven to be a reliable middle reliever in the past but he does not stand to see many save chances with John Axford in Milwaukee. When healthy, Saito should be considered as a low-end option in NL-only formats.
News: MLB.com reports Brewers RP Takashi Saito, on the 60-day disabled list, felt discomfort in his side during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Nashville on Friday. The right-hander worked a scoreless frame, allowing one hit while striking out two. He is expected to be checked out by a team doctor before throwing again. "He felt good throwing yesterday, but he still has a little bit of tightness in his oblique where he hurt himself before," said manager Ron Roenicke. "So he flew home to Milwaukee and is being checked out by a doctor today."
Analysis: Saito has been out since early April as he has endured several setbacks in his recovery. This looks like it could be another one so Fantasy owners should keep an eye on his status over the next few days. The 31-year-old has proven to be a reliable middle reliever in the past but he does not stand to see many save chances with John Axford in Milwaukee. When healthy, Saito should be considered as a low-end option in NL-only formats.
News: Brewers RP Takashi Saito gave up one hit and struck out two batters in his inning of work on Friday night for Triple-A Nashville. After Milwaukee designated Danny Herrera for assignment after Friday's 10-4 loss to Boston, the Brewers may be looking to bring Saito back soon.
Analysis: On Wednesday the team's assistant general manager Gord Ash said they could really use Saito -- that statement is even more true now. For now he remains on the disabled list with tightness behind his right shoulder and a left rib cage strain. The Brewers may bring him back sooner than later as they need the bullpen help. When healthy, Fantasy owners should view Saito as a low-end option in NL-only formats.
News: MLB.com reports that the report of Takashi Saito's one-inning stint at Triple-A Nashville on Wednesday was so positive that the Brewers may accelerate his return to the majors. Saito struck out a batter in a scoreless eighth inning for Nashville. He threw 12 of his 17 pitches for strikes. "Our report [Wednesday] night from the staff and a scout there was exceptional," assistant general manager Gord Ash said. "So, we'll see. We could use him."
Analysis: The original idea was to have Saito make three or four appearances at Nashville to ensure he is past the left rib cage strain that has him on the 15-day disabled list and the tightness behind his right shoulder that developed last week. However, he may bypass that. Saito is scheduled to pitch again for the Sounds on Saturday. The Brewers will evaluate after that outing whether he needs more. Saito might assume the setup role right away for the Brewers as Kameron Loe has relinquished three leads in his last 10 outings. Consider Saito a low-end option in NL-only formats when he returns.
News: Milwaukee RP Takashi Saito threw a scoreless inning of relief during a rehab outing with Triple-A Nashville on Wednesday night. Saito, who was scratched from his appearance Sunday because of upper-back tightness, recorded a strikeout during his 1-2-3 inning.
Analysis: Saito, who is on the 60-day disabled list with a strained oblique, didn't seem to be hampered by the back issue. He's scheduled to pitch another inning later this week and barring any setbacks, he could be activated from the DL. Saito might assume the setup role right away for the Brewers as Kameron Loe has relinquished three leads in his last 10 outings. Consider Saito a low-end option in NL-only formats when he returns.
News: Brewers RP Takashi Saito is now scheduled to start a rehab stint with Triple-A Nashville on Wednesday, reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Saito was scratched from a rehab stint on Sunday with Class A Wisconsin with upper-back tightness. He just didnt feel right. He didnt want to push it, assistant general manager Gord Ash said
Analysis: Saito is becoming the king of setbacks but now is apparently ready to give it another shot. Fantasy owners should continue to monitor how he fares once he finally does start his rehab assignment. However, since he does not stand to see any save chances as long as John Axford is in town, continue to ignore Saito in all but the deepest of NL-only formats that utilize middle men when healthy.
News: Brewers RP Takashi Saito has been cleared by a team doctor to start a minor-league rehab assignment, reports MLB.com. Saito was scratched from a rehab stint on Sunday with Class A Wisconsin with upper-back tightness. He just didnt feel right. He didnt want to push it, assistant general manager Gord Ash said. Saito is now scheduled to start a rehab stint with Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday or Wednesday.

News: MLB.com reports that Brewers RP Takashi Saito was scratched from his scheduled rehab start on Sunday with upper-back tightness. He felt a little tightness in his shoulder, and he didnt want to go out there and throw and take a chance on it becoming something worse, Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. Theyve taken a look at it, and right now theyre just calling it shoulder tightness. He will return to Miller Park for an examination on Sunday. Saito is rehabbing from an oblique injury and this marks the second time he's gone for a rehab assignment and come back with a different injury.
Analysis: Saito keeps on getting set back every time it appears he's making any kind of progress. That is not good news for the 41-year-old reliever. He's only worth stashing in deeper leagues that reward for holds.
News: The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that injured Brewers RP Takashi Saito (oblique) will begin a rehab stint with Class A Wisconsin on Sunday. He will then move his rehab to Triple-A Nashville to complete the assignment before a possible return to the team. Saito has appeared in just two games this season while dealing with the injury.
Analysis: Saito seems to be on the right track after suffering setbacks and even a transfer to the 60-day DL while nursing the oblique injury. He gave up two runs in just two innings of relief work before being sidelined, so there's not much of a sample size for his efforts this season. Fantasy owners should keep an eye on the 41-year-old as he goes through the rehab to make sure he stays on track. However, even when Saito returns, he is just a marginal option in deeper leagues until he proves he can get back on track.
News: Brewers RP Takashi Saito (oblique) will throw a simulated game on Thursday and could begin a rehab assignment shortly after that. "If everything goes well there, well send him out," manager Ron Roenicke said. "Probably his first outing in Appleton, and then maybe hell get a couple in Triple-A."
Analysis: The last time Saito was on a rehab assignment he ended up inuring his oblique after recovering from a hamstring injury. He is hoping for better results this time out. Saito will help Kameron Loe with the setup work in front of closer John Axford once he is healthy. He might get a save chance here or there, but Saito is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward for holds.
News: Brewers RP Takashi Saito (oblique) threw a live bullpen session prior to Monday night's contest against the Marlins, reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Saito, who has only pitched in two innings this season, is scheduled to throw a simulated inning Thursday before heading out on a minor-league rehab assignment. "It went well," Saito said through translator Kosuke Inaji. "I had no pain; I felt good. I'm doing everything I can do to get back and help my team. Right now, I'm just taking it day to day."
Analysis: Saito appears to be nearing a return so Fantasy owners should keep an eye on his status in the coming days to see if he will be able to go out on a rehab stint. The right-hander hasn't pitched since April 4, but will be a welcome arm in the Brewers' bullpen once healthy. But since he does not stand to see any save chances as long as John Axford is in town, continue to ignore Saito in all but the deepest of NL-only formats that utilize middle men, when healthy.
News: MLB.com reports that Brewers RP Takashi Saito, on the 60-day disabled list due to a strained left oblique, threw 30 pitches during a bullpen session on Friday and reported no setbacks. He is expected to pitch to hitters on Monday and if all goes well, will be sent on a rehab assignment.
News: Brewers RP Takashi Saito, on the 60-day DL with a strained left hamstring, threw 20 pitches in a bullpen session on Tuesday, reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Saito is scheduled to throw another session on Friday and if all goes well, will pitch in a simulated game. "I don't feel any pain at all," Saito said through his interpreter, Kosuke Inaji.
Analysis: Saito is making small steps in his recovery but is still likely weeks away from pitching with the Brewers again. The right-hander has only pitched two innings thus far on the season and then suffered a setback during his final rehab outing. Fantasy owners should continue to monitor his status moving forward. When healthy, Saito is merely an NL-only reliever option in formats that value true middle men.
News: Milwaukee RP Takashi Saito, on the 60-day DL with a strained left hamstring, is expected to throw in the bullpen Tuesday and three or four more times after that before trying a simulated game, manager Ron Roenicke said before Monday's game against the Reds.
Analysis: It wouldn't surprise us if Saito needs a rehab assignment before returning, so he could be out a few more weeks. He will be a key setup man for Milwaukee once he is healthy, but since he won't initially be in line for save chances, then Saito is merely a Fantasy option in leagues that reward for holds.
News: Brewers RP Takashi Saito, who is currently on the 60-day disabled list with strained left oblique, could throw a bullpen session as early as next week, reports the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Manager Ron Roenicke also added that Saito would continue to rehab in Milwaukee for the time being. "There's no discomfort anymore there," Roenicke said. "He's going to throw a bullpen maybe as early as Monday-Tuesday and then somewhere on the road trip have him throw a simulated game."
News: Milwaukee claimed infielder Josh Wilson off waivers from the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, reports MLB.com. The team transferred Takashi Saito to the 60-day DL to make room on the roster.
Analysis: Saito was signed during the offseason to add depth to the bullpen. He's pitched in just two innings, and owns an 0-1 record for the Brewers. The team hasn't given a timetable, but it doesn't seem as if he'll be back before June. When healthy, Saito is merely an NL-only reliever option in formats that value true middle men.
News: Brewers RP Takashi Saito's MRI on Saturday confirmed that the right-hander suffered a left oblique strain in his minor-league rehab outing on Thursday, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Saito was earlier than he was supposed to in his final rehab appearance in Triple-A Nashville, because of this new oblique injury. Saito received a cortisone shot and is expected to miss another four to six weeks. He's already missed about a month with a lingering left hamstring strain. "He was working hard to come off the DL. In his first (appearance), he does something else," manager Ron Roenicke said. "I feel bad for him, and it hurts us no doubt. It's a tough start to the season for him."
Analysis: Saito was signed during the offseason to add depth to the bullpen. He's pitched in just two innings, and owns an 0-1 record for the Brewers. With him out for at least another month, Kameron Loe will continue to be the primary setup man for close John Axford. While this is bad news for the Brewers, it has little impact on Fantasy leagues. When healthy, Saito is merely an NL-only reliever option in formats that value true middle men.
News: Brewers RP Takashi Saito, who was pulled early from what was supposed to be his final rehab outing on Thursday evening, was yanked because of a new oblique injury. "He threw a pitch and felt it," said Brewers manager Ron Roenicke to MLB.com. "I hope he didn't do it very bad." He did not re-injure the hamstring that he was trying to rehab. "We were going to have him go out for one start, really to make sure he'd go 100 percent and try to get that game condition so when he came back here [he would be ready]. ... We were really worried about the hamstring, so this is really tough," said Roenicke. "I know he's disappointed. Let's hope this isn't too long."
Analysis: Saito's one-game rehab stint came to an abrupt end on Friday, and he'll now likely remain on the DL for a little bit longer while this oblique issue takes care of itself. We don't think Saito will be back much before mid-May, so remains barely worth stashing away in deeper NL-only leagues that have DL slots.
News: The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Brewers RP Takashi Saito (hamstring) was pulled from his rehab outing Thursday with Triple-A Nashville. Trainer Dave Yeager had to go to the mound after Saito threw one pitch to his third batter faced. Saito then left the game. Saito allowed a single and struck out a batter before exiting.
Analysis: Saito was expected to come off the DL as long as he got through his rehab outing Thursday, but this definitely doesn't look good. Saito will be a setup man for John Axford when activated, but that might not happen as soon as we thought. Saito remains just a low-end Fantasy RP.
News: Brewers RP Takashi Saito will report to Triple-A Nashville for a rehab appearance on Thursday. Saito, who is currently on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain, threw two simulated games at Miller Park but the team wants him to face some opposing hitters before he rejoins the bullpen, which could happen this weekend in Houston. Saito is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA on the season. "I asked him how he felt, and I asked him what he thought he needed," manager Ron Roenicke said. "Would you want to go down to pitch one game to see game competition where you're going 100 percent, how not just the arm or the hamstring felt? For us, it makes the decision easier if he goes down and pitches a game and is perfectly fine. It makes it easier for us to take him off the DL."
Analysis: Saito's hamstring appears to be fully healed but the team just wants to make absolutely sure. Saito will once again resume his setup work to closer John Axford when healthy. He might grab some save chances on the days Axford needs a rest, but he might not get many. Saito remains just a low-end Fantasy RP.
News: Brewers RP Takashi Saito pitched a simulated inning on Monday, reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Saito reported no problems in the clubhouse after throwing. "Well talk about that after we get in," manager Ron Roenicke said about when the team will activate Saito. "See if its going to be Wednesday or when exactly its going to be."
Analysis: Saito said that his hamstring is feeling 100 percent healthy and the simulated inning proved just that. He could be activated without a minor-league rehab assignment, which means he might be able to return for Fantasy Week 4 (April 25-May 1). He has not pitched since April 4 and owns a 9.00 ERA in two appearances this season. The setup man should be considered a low-end NL-only Fantasy option, when healthy.
News: MLB.com reports that Brewers RP Takashi Saito, who is on the 15-day DL with a strained left hamstring, will throw a simulated game on Sunday to see whether or not he will need a rehab stint in the minors. "I'm leaving it all up to the trainers and the coaching staff," said Saito.
Analysis: Saito said that his hamstring is feeling 100 percent healthy so keep an eye on how he does during his simulated game. He could be activated without a minor-league rehab assignment, which means he might be able to return for Fantasy Week 4 (April 25-May 1). He has not pitched since April 4 and owns a 9.00 ERA in two appearances this season. The setup man allowed two runs and three hits in his last outing before hitting the disabled list. Fantasy owners should consider him a low-end option in NL-only formats that reward points for middle relievers, when healthy.
News: Milwaukee RP Takashi Saito pitched in a simulated game Friday and could return to the team next week, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Saito is currently on the disabled list while recovering from a left hamstring strain. "I think he's going to throw again Monday, the same thing, and then we're going to see where he is," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "If he comes out of that one good, then he'll be ready."
Analysis: Roenicke also said Saito likely won't need a rehab assignment in the minors before he is activated from the disabled list. Saito has not pitched since April 4 and owns a 9.00 ERA in two appearances this season. The setup man allowed two runs and three hits in his last outing before hitting the disabled list. Fantasy owners should consider him a low-end option in NL-only formats that reward points for middle relievers when healthy.
News: Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said Tuesday that RP Takashi Saito (hamstring) will not come off the DL on Friday -- the first day he is eligible to be activated. He will toss a bullpen session Tuesday and then a simulated game Friday before Milwaukee discusses the next move. Rick [Kranitz, the pitching coach] is more comfortable if we get him out to face some hitters, Roenicke said. The bullpens, its hard to recreate that true 100 percent. If we do a simulated game, we have a chance to see where he is. Rick would be more comfortable if we do that a couple of times. Well see.
Analysis: The Brewers could really use Saito since their bullpen has been overused as of late, but they can't afford to rush him and suffer a devastating setback. Closer John Axford has struggled, but Roenicke is committed to his closer. Saito will primarily do setup work once he is off the DL, but is still a fallback option for saves just in case Axford needs a day off or gets into a jam. Saito is a low-end Fantasy RP when active.
News: Brewers RP Takashi Saito, who was placed on the disabled list Monday, retroactive to April 5, with a strained left hamstring, does not consider this a setback, reports MLB.com. "There was no setback," Saito stated. "I discussed it with the trainer, and last year when I injured my hamstring [while with Atlanta], around about a month later I injured my shoulder, so we were worried about [repeating] that, and just wanted to be a hundred percent and get all the tightness out of my hamstring, and come back after that's done." Saito believes he'll be able to return quickly after the DL stint.
Analysis: The Brewers were counting on Saito to be ready by Tuesday, but it appears he needs more time to recover. His DL stint will be backdated, but Saito can't return until Week 3 (April 18-24) at the earliest. Saito is one of the top setup men, but without regular save chances, he is merely a Fantasy RP in leagues that use true middle men when active.
News: The Brewers placed RP Takashi Saito on the 15-day DL on Monday because of a left hamstring strain. He has not pitched since the home opener on April 4. Brandon Kintzler was recalled from Triple-A Nashville to taker Saito's roster spot.

News: Brewers manager Ron Roenicke told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel on Sunday that RP Takashi Saito might be able to return to the mound as early as Tuesday against the Pirates. He has not pitched since April 4 due to hamstring tightness. "He was still a little tight (Friday)," Roenicke said. "He should be fine for Tuesday."
Analysis: Saito has given up two runs in two innings pitched so far this season but has a career 2.24 ERA and should be a valuable arm out of the bullpen for the Brewers. Keep an eye on his status moving forward but since he is not line to see many save chances this season, continue to view the right-hander a more of an NL-only option, when healthy.
News: The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said prior to Wednesday's game against the Braves that he did not think reliever Takashi Saito would require a stint on the 15-day disabled list due to lingering hamstring tightness. "I don't think so," said Roenicke. "I'd be very surprised if that happens." He was not available for Wednesday or Thursday against the Braves due to similar hamstring tightness to what he dealt with in spring training. "It might be similar to last year. I'm not sure," said Saito, who dealt with another hamstring issue last season.
Analysis: Saito has been able to do some throwing on the field to keep his arm in shape, but there is no clear timetable for when he might be able to get back on a mound to throw. Saito will continue to serve in a setup role for the Brewers when healthy and has appeal in deeper Rotisserie formats and any league that rewards holds. Continue to monitor his progress and reserve him across the board for now.
News: Brewers manager Ron Roenicke revealed after Wednesday's game against the Braves that RP Takashi Saito was unavailable because of left hamstring tightness. He is day to day.
Analysis: Saito has a hold and a loss in two outings this season. Although, his loss on Monday might be because of his hamstring problem. Saito has proven to be a very reliable late-inning arm in his MLB career, so we have no doubts he'll bounce back from the loss. However, with minimal save chances, Saito is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward for holds.
News: Milwaukee RP Takashi Saito pitched a scoreless inning of relief during the Brewers' 7-6 loss to Cincinnati in the season opener for both teams on Thursday. Saito replaced Kameron Loe in the eighth inning and struck out Jonny Gomes to lead off the inning. He then allowed two singles to the following two batters before fanning Ryan Braun and forcing Casey McGehee to ground out to short to end the threat. His lone walk was an intentional pass to Prince Fielder as he upheld a 6-3 lead.
Analysis: Saito did a much better job preserving Milwaukee's lead than closer John Axford, but don't go running for the 41-year-old setup man on waiver wires. Axford was tagged for four earned runs, including a walk-off three-run homer to Reds C Ramon Hernandez, however, he will be given an extended opportunity to excel. Plus, it's only the first game of the season and the Brewers are not going to make a switch after one bad outing. Fantasy owners should consider Saito an option in deeper mixed leagues and NL-only formats that reward points for middle relievers.
News: Brewers RP Takashi Saito, who has been dealing with a hamstring issue this spring, made his unofficial debut for Milwaukee on Saturday. He recorded two outs before reaching his allotment of pitches in the Brewers 2-1 victory over the Angels. He threw fastballs for all but two of his 18 pitches in the fourth inning -- which was just over what manager Ron Roenicke was aiming for him. "I know he can finish the inning," Roenicke told MLB.com. "There's no reason to pitch him too many pitches today. If he goes out and it's a tough at-bat and he throws six, seven pitches, now we're getting to a place we didn't want to go." Saito posted a 2.83 ERA in 56 games for the Braves in 2010 before suffering a shoulder injury, ending his season. "Last year I ended the season injured, so I'm just happy I could throw today," said Saito, who indicated he pitched "with no problem at all." He added it wasn't about getting people out, but rather throwing his fastball and seeing how it felt. "I was very satisfied," Saito said.
Analysis: Saito will take at least two days off before throwing again. It seems his hamstring is not an issue and that the Brewers are just easing him into action after last year's shoulder injury. He will be a big part of Milwaukee's bullpen and help out John Axford out as he enters his first season as the full-time closer. If Axford falters, Saito would be a backup plan at the closer position. As of now, the 41-year-old Saito doesn't hold much Fantasy value. Owners in NL-only leagues -- that value true middle men -- could give him a shot, but that is where his value ends.
News: Brewers RP Takashi Saito is dealing with a bit of a hamstring issue and the team will be careful with him, reports MLB.com. It is a minor injury, but Saito asked to be pushed back to Saturday against the Angels, from when he was supposed to pitch on Wednesday against the Cubs. "Right now, I'm kind of tight in my hamstring and my hip," Saito said through translator Kosuke Inaji. "I don't think it's that big of a deal, but last year when I hurt my shoulder, I feel that the reason was I hurt my hamstring and tried to throw harder with my shoulder. It's still early in Spring Training, so I want to be careful right now."
Analysis: The 41-year-old Saito will throw a bullpen on Wednesday, instead. Saito, a former closer, was 2-3 with a 2.83 ERA in 56 games for the Braves last year and has a 17-13 big league record with a 2.19 ERA in five seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston and Atlanta. He still has good enough stuff to close if something happens to John Axford, but injuries are a concern at age 41. If you're looking for a middle reliever in an NL-only league, he's still a decent a choice.
News: The Brewers finalized a $1.75 million, one-year contract with reliever Takashi Saito on Wednesday. The right-hander can earn an additional $1 million in performance bonuses based on games and $500,000 for days on the active roster.

News: The Brewers signed a one-year deal with free agent RP Takashi Saito. He was 2-3 with a 2.83 ERA in 56 appearances for the Braves last season. He has a 17-13 career record with a 2.19 ERA in five major league seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston and Atlanta. The 40-year-old native of Japan also has 84 career saves, including 81 with the Dodgers from 2006-08. Saito is expected to fill the setup role for closer John Axford.
Analysis: After a slight setback in 2009, Saito reemerged as a top setup man last season. Though a dropoff can come at any time for a pitcher in his forties, Saito is a good bet to be one of the more productive setup relievers in Fantasy this season. He should be on the radar of owners in NL-only formats.
News: The Braves released RP Takashi Saito on Tuesday. He signed as a free agent with Atlanta on Dec. 3 and his contract specified he would be released within 11 days of the end of the World Series. The 40-year-old appeared in 56 games with Atlanta, compiling a 2.83 ERA with 17 holds.
Analysis: Saito had a very good season in a setup role, and he would have value in leagues that use middle men in 2011, if he latches on with another team. For now, Saito is a free agent, though he could possibly retire prior to next season. Keep an eye on Saito's status in deeper Fantasy formats.
News: Braves RP Takashi Saito, who was left off the NLDS roster because of shoulder soreness that has plagued him since mid-September, was added Sunday in place of closer Billy Wagner, who left Game 2 on Friday with a strained left oblique.
Analysis: Saito's inning in the instructional league Saturday obviously went well enough to convince the Braves he's ready to pitch again. He still has good stuff, posting a 2.83 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP with 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings this year, but his age makes him a constant injury risk. Since he doesn't figure to close in 2011, he can go undrafted outside of NL-only leagues.
News: Braves RP Takashi Saito, sidelined with shoulder soreness since mid-September and not on the playoff roster, is scheduled to pitch Saturday at instructional league to stay sharp.
Analysis: At age 40, injuries are commonplace for Saito. He still has good stuff, posting a 2.83 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP with 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings this year, but his age makes him unlikely to replace the retiring Billy Wagner at closer next year. You have no reason to draft him outside of NL-only leagues next year.
News: Braves RP Takashi Saito, who has been slowed by a sore shoulder, threw in the bullpen during a workout Tuesday and then said he was told he won't be on the postseason roster. He allowed two runs on two hits and three walks in one-third of an inning when he tried to come back from the injury Saturday. Before then, he hadn't pitched since Sept. 17.
News: Atlanta RP Takashi Saito still hasn't pitched in a game since injuring his right shoulder on Sept. 17, but has progressed enough to return to action. According to MLB.com, Saito was warming up in the bullpen on Friday against the Phillies, but manager Bobby Cox didn't feel comfortable bringing him into the game. Cox would like to see if Saito can pitch and how effective he can be, before adding him to the playoff roster -- if they make the postseason.
Analysis: Saito could be a factor during the regular season for the Braves, but isn't worth much to Fantasy owners. It was originally reported that Saito was done for the year, but has fought back to be ready to pitch. The 40-year-old hurler isn't worth much in Fantasy leagues as he isn't in line for saves. If he doesn't retire, Saito should be considered a single-league Fantasy option in leagues that utilize true middlemen.
News: Atlanta RP Takashi Saito told pitching coach Roger McDowell on Wednesday that he was available to pitch in the afternoon game against Florida. Saito was back in the bullpen Wednesday, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He's been out since leaving a Sept. 17 game with shoulder tendinitis. The 40-year-old threw 27 bullpen pitches Wednesday and decided he was ready to go. Im worried about because I missed 12 days just getting right back into the game, he said through his interpreter.
Analysis: Saito wants to get back in action in order to ensure his spot in the bullpen should the Braves make the postseason. He was originally thought done for the year but he could see some action over the final couple of games. Still, Saito is going to pitch in middle-to-late relief and is not a candidate for saves. He has little Fantasy value.
News: Braves RP Takashi Saito played catch on Friday and did not throw a bullpen session as originally scheduled, according to MLB.com. Saito might still return to the mound next week, but still hasn't tested his sore right shoulder. "I didn't throw as hard as I could, but it still didn't feel that bad," said Saito, who remains hopeful that his recent right shoulder discomfort is simply a product of tendinitis. He's hopeful to toss a bullpen session this weekend and possibly rejoin the bullpen for the Braves series with the Marlins. "I gained a little confidence, but I kind of felt that I could throw as much as I did today," Saito said through his interpreter. "It's what's ahead that I'm still not sure about."
Analysis: In 55 appearances this year, Saito is 2-3 with a 2.52 ERA. He does have 69 strikeouts in 53 2/3 innings, but at age 40, Saito's career is getting close to the end of the road. While he is still hopeful to pitch in 2010, Fantasy owners can continue to ignore him. When healthy, he is just a middle-relief option in leagues that value true middle men.
News: Atlanta RP Takashi Saito will throw a bullpen session on Friday to test his injured shoulder in hopes he can return to pitch again this season, reports MLB.com on Tuesday. Saito underwent an MRI on Monday that found no structural damage but he is still going to have to prove he's ready to take the mound again. "I'm just glad that there's no major problems," Saito said through his interpreter. "Having said that, I still need to play catch and throw in the bullpen. So I've still got a few more steps to take before I know I'm ready."
Analysis: Saito has thought about the possibility that, at age 40, his career might be coming to an end. He'd like to get back on a mound at least one more time before the end of the season and seems on track to at least accomplish that goal. Saito is still just a middle-relief option for leagues that care about them, when healthy.
News: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that an MRI on Takashi Saito's sore right shoulder showed tendinitis. The Braves may get their setup man back within a few days. Saito left Friday night's victory over the Mets with pain in his pitching shoulder after striking out both batters he faced in the eighth inning.
Analysis: Saito has been one of the better setup men in Fantasy, and he should be rostered in any league that uses middle relievers or rewards holds, when healthy. He will miss part of Fantasy Week 25 (Sept. 20-26), which makes him a risky start for the current scoring period, but owners should be ready to get him active for Week 26 (Sept. 27-Oct. 3).
News: Atlanta Takashi Saito is out with a sore right shoulder and the Braves are uncertain if they'll get their setup man back this season. Saito left Friday night's victory over the New York Mets with pain in his pitching shoulder after striking out both batters he faced in the eighth inning. The Braves say the right-hander is unavailable for the final two games of the series and he'll travel back to Atlanta on Sunday to undergo tests Monday. Saito's shoulder began bothering him during the All-Star break and the Braves monitored his workload, according to MLB.com.
Analysis: Saito is 2-3 with a 2.52 ERA and one save in 55 appearances. He has compiled 16 consecutive scoreless outings, striking out 20 in 15 2/3 innings. Saito is Billy Wagner's primary setup man and his loss for any length of time would hurt Atlanta down the stretch. With him undergoing tests on Monday, he'll likely miss first part of the Phillies series in Week 25 (Sept. 20-26).
News: After leaving Friday's appearance with shoulder pain, Braves RP Takashi Saito will undergo an MRI on his sore shoulder on Monday in Atlanta. Saito is doubtful to make an appearance on Saturday in New York.
Analysis: Saito probably is not going to pitch again until at least the early part of Week 25 (Sept. 20-26) after the MRI. Saito is Billy Wagner's primary setup man and his loss for any length of time would hurt Atlanta down the stretch. Fantasy owners that use true middle men should monitor Saito through the weekend before setting those Week 25 (Sept. 20-26) lineups.
News: Braves RP Takashi Saito left after striking out the first two batters he faced in the eighth inning with shoulder pain on Friday. Manager Bobby Cox said he is day to day. "I have concern because I don't know what's wrong yet," Saito said through a translator.
Analysis: Saito is Billy Wagner's primary setup man and his loss for any length of time would hurt Atlanta down the stretch. Fantasy owners that use true middle men should monitor Saito through the weekend before setting those Week 25 (Sept. 20-26) lineups.
News: RHP Takashi Saito has not allowed an earned run in his past 14 innings, dating back to July 30. In that period, he has struck out 18 while allowing just nine hits and one walk.
Analysis: Saito is useful in deeper leagues that use true middle men down the stretch. We just don't think he will be a legit option for save opportunities.
News: MLB.com reports that Braves RP Takashi Saito has limited vision at night. A passed ball allowed by Brian McCann in Tuesday night's game against the Rockies was related to Saito's difficulties in seeing which pitches were being called. The Braves' catchers will now be relaying pitch calls to Saito by tapping different parts of their body rather than putting down a certain number of fingers.
Analysis: The Braves' catchers have figured out a work-around for Saito's night vision problems, so don't expect it to affect his performance. He has been very good in a setup role this season and should remain active in leagues that use non-closer relievers and reward holds.
News: Braves RP Takashi Saito, formerly a closer with the Dodgers, recorded his first save of the season Sunday against the Giants, allowing one hit and striking out the side in one inning of work. He was filling in for closer Billy Wagner, who had pitched the last three days and five of the last six.
Analysis: Saito still has good stuff, striking out well more than a batter per inning with a 1.12 WHIP, but in his current role, he has minimal Fantasy appeal. At age 40, he's unlikely to be a closer again, making him just an NL-only option.
News: Braves RP Takashi Saito experienced no pain while pitching in Wednesday's loss to the Padres, his first appearance in 10 days due to right shoulder soreness. It didnt feel bad at all the last time I threw, he told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. In a scoreless inning of work, he walked one while striking out one.
Analysis: Despite the shoulder problem keeping him out of action, Saito has put up solid numbers during July. He's recorded four holds while posting a 2.70 ERA. Fantasy owners in leagues that use true middle men can do a lot worse than this setup guy.
News: Braves RP Takashi Saito rebounded from a pair of tough outings with an effective appearance during Wednesday's win over the Nationals. He entered the game in the eighth inning with Atlanta up 4-1, retiring all three batters he faced on 10 pitches, striking out two. Saito had been charged with two earned runs in each of his last two games.
Analysis: Saito's poor outings could be the result of rust after coming off the disabled list, as he's put together a nice season. With eight holds and a 3.81 ERA, he's a nice Fantasy option in leagues that use true middle men.
News: Atlanta RP Takashi Saito (1-3) relieved Derek Lowe to begin the eighth inning on Thursday and gave up a leadoff single to Juan Pierre. After a sacrifice and a flyout, Paul Konerko lined the first pitch he saw into the left-field bleachers for his 18th homer of the year. Saito's ERA rose to 3.38 on the year.
Analysis: After getting activated from the DL Tuesday and getting praise from manager Bobby Cox on Wednesday's performance (one scoreless relief inning), Saito falters for the Braves. "Saito looked good for pitching for the first time in 17 or 18 days," Cox told MLB.com before Wednesday's outing. Saito will likely remain RP Billy Wagner's setup man and get a few save chances, but for now Saito remains a Fantasy option in the deepest of mixed leagues and NL-only leagues that use true middle men.
News: The Braves activated RP Takashi Saito (hamstring) from the 15-day DL on Tuesday. The Braves are hopeful that Saito has no further setbacks with lingering tightness in his left hamstring. "My whole body feels great," Saito told MLB.com through his interpreter. "It's just my hamstring that is a little tight. I just hope that I can last until the All-Star break."
Analysis: Saito was pitching well as Billy Wagner's setup man before getting hurt. "I don't think he's 100 percent, but he's in the 90s," Braves manager Bobby Cox said. "He says he can do everything." Saito might get a save chance once in a blue moon, if Wagner needs a day off. But Saito's Fantasy value is best left for leagues that use true middle men.
News: Braves RP Takashi Saito (hamstring) could come off the 15-day disabled list before Tuesday's road game against the White Sox. Saito struck out one in one inning of a rehab appearance Sunday at Triple-A Gwinnett.
Analysis: Good news for Fantasy owners as Saito could be ready to go on Tuesday. The right-hander has been a reliable reliever for the Braves this season with 34 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings. It looks as though he will be activated in Fantasy Week 12 (June 21-27) so Fantasy owners should plan accordingly. Saito is a viable middle-relief option in leagues that use them, when healthy.
News: Braves RP Takashi Saito (hamstring) will pitch one inning for Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday and could be activated for the team's three-games series against the White Sox that begins on Tuesday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Saito was 1-2 with a 2.92 ERA in 25 appearances before landing on the DL June 4.
Analysis: Good news for Fantasy owners as long as everything goes well for Saito on Sunday.
News: Atlanta RP Takashi Saito (hamstring) completed some defensive drills Thursday and had no discomfort, according to a MLB.com report. "It felt good," Saito said through his interpreter. "It felt really stable. It didn't feel like there was anything wrong with it." He's been sidelined since June 3 for the Braves. He may have another bullpen session Friday and could get activated Sunday.
Analysis: In 25 appearances for the Braves this year, Saito had a 2.92 ERA, 34 strikeouts and a 1-2 record. The fact he ran off the mound Thursday is a good sign that he very well could be activated this weekend and give RP Billy Wagner his setup man back. Saito's return is good for the Braves, but has marginal Fantasy impact unless your leagues uses true middle men.
News: Atlanta reliever Takashi Saito tested his injured hamstring during a bullpen on Wednesday and gained confidence that he'll be activated when eligible on Saturday, reports MLB.com. "Today's bullpen [session] wasn't about how good or bad I felt," Saito said through his interpreter. "It was just to show myself that I could throw off a mound."
Analysis: The Braves are hoping Saito will be available out of the bullpen as early as Saturday. He'll have a few more tests before the club is certain he'll be able to return, however. Sidelined since June 3, Saito has a 2.92 ERA over 25 appearances and was Atlanta's top setup man before getting hurt. "I really believe that I do want to come back by Saturday, but I still can't say that for sure," Saito said. "I need to speak with the pitching coach, trainers and Bobby [Cox] about it first." Even if he does come back, Saito is nothing more than a middle-relief option in leagues that use them.
News: From The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Takashi Saito, on the 15-day DL with a strained left hamstring, should not need to make any minor-league rehab appearances before being activated. The hamstring has responded well and he has been able to throw regularly. Saito will be eligible to return Saturday.
Analysis: Saito is nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues that use true middle men, once activated. Don't use him in Fantasy Week 11 (June 14-20), but he could be back for Fantasy Week 12 (June 21-27).
News: The Atlanta Braves placed reliever Takashi Saito on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring and recalled reliever Craig Kimbrel from Triple-A Gwinnett before Friday night's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Saito was injured during the ninth inning of Atlanta's 4-3 victory over the Dodgers on Thursday night. The 40-year-old right-hander tweaked his left hamstring throwing an 0-1 strike to Russell Martin, and Jonny Venters struck out Martin with his only pitch to get his first big league save. "We hate to do it because he's such a huge part of our bullpen," manager Bobby Cox said. "He's been just fantastic. But it's nothing that's going to get well in 10 days. It's sore. It hasn't bled out yet, but it will. So we may as well play it safe. But I look at it in a positive way, too, because it'll give his arm time to rest up also."
Analysis: Saito was working on his first save when he got hurt. Saito, who had a career-high 39 saves for the Dodgers in 2007, spent last season with Boston and signed with Atlanta over the winter. He is 1-2 with a 2.92 ERA in 25 appearances for the Braves. Fantasy owners should stash Saito for the time being. As the Braves setup man, his Fantasy value lies in NL-only formats that use true middle men.
News: Braves RP Takashi Saito suffered a pulled left hamstring during Thursday's win over the Dodgers, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He was injured while throwing a strike to Russell Martin in the ninth inning with two outs and Atlanta up 4-3 and had to leave the game. Saito recorded a hold after pitching 2/3 of an inning. The team will try to avoid placing the reliever on the disabled list, but they will do so if he does not improve over the weekend.
Analysis: Saito was on his way to his first save of the season when he was hurt. At 1-2 with six holds, 34 strikeouts and a 2.92 ERA, he's an effective reliever. However, as a setup man, his Fantasy value lies in NL-only formats that use true middle men. If you do own Saito in one of these formats, be ready to stash him for Fantasy Week 10 (June 7-13), as there is a substantial chance he will go on the DL.
News: Braves RP Takashi Saito pitched a perfect eighth inning on Sunday, striking out two batters and earning his first win of the year in the 5-2 victory against the Pirates. The Japanese reliever earned the win after his teammates posted three runs in the bottom of the inning. Saito is 1-2 on the year with a 3.13 ERA in 23 appearances.
Analysis: Saito has now pitched three straight scoreless outing has has only allowed eight runs in 23 innings pitched this season. He has one blown have on the year but has a strikeout to walk ratio of 33-to-8. Saito could be useful in deeper NL-only formats but is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men.
News:Ryan Doumit homered with two outs in the 10th inning off Takashi Saito for his third hit, helping the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Braves 3-2 on Sunday and avoid a three-game sweep. Saito (0-2) retired the first two batters in the 10th before Doumit drove a waist-high fastball into the right field seats, only the sixth homer by Pittsburgh in its last 21 home games. "I would've pitched the same pitch again," Saito told MLB.com through a translator. "It was just the location was off."
Analysis: Saito was back on the hill Sunday after his first multi-inning appearance of the season on Saturday. He held Pittsburgh off the scoreboard for 1 1/3 innings on Saturday, but couldn't repeat the feat Sunday. Saito was pitching well for Atlanta up until Wednesday against the Reds, when he allowed three hits and three runs in 1/3 of an inning. Saito had posted a 2.12 ERA and limited opponents to a .133 batting average up until that game against Cincinnati. Despite his recent slide, manager Bobby Cox is pleased with Saito. "He's been a great addition to our staff," Cox said. "He's been super." While Saito is no longer closing games, he is a decent arm in Fantasy leagues that use true middle men.
News: From The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Takashi Saito needed the work, and manager Bobby Cox saw the eighth inning of Monday's blowout win over the Cubs as an opportunity to take care of that. It was also an opportunity to acclimate Saito to the Turner Field mound in real game conditions. Saito pitched a perfect inning.
Analysis: Saito is a fall-back option for saves as Billy Wagner's setup man. Assuming Wagner stays healthy, consider Saito is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men.
News: According to MLB.com via Twitter, Braves RP Takashi Saito made a big impression on manager Bobby Cox in his early bullpen sessions. "He's opening everybody's eyes," Cox said. "Command is outstanding."
Analysis: Saito was one of the most dominant closers in baseball back when he played for the Dodgers, making him capable of putting up Fantasy-relevant numbers even as a setup man. At age 39, he might have trouble staying healthy, so you can leave him for NL-only leagues for now.
News: The Braves made another move to strengthen their pitching staff Thursday, agreeing to a $3.2 million, one-year contract with reliever Takashi Saito. Saito, who turns 40 in February, has 83 saves in four major-league seasons after a long career in Japan. He made the NL All-Star team in 2007, when he had 39 saves for the Dodgers. Last season, the right-hander went 3-3 with two saves and a 2.43 ERA in a setup role for the Red Sox. Saito is expected to remain in that spot with the Braves, who signed closer Billy Wagner to a $7 million, one-year deal on Wednesday, though there might be an occasional chance to save games.
Analysis: Manager Bobby Cox said he might flip-flop Wagner, a left-hander, and Saito based on the situation. Cox had success last season doing that with Rafael Soriano and Mike Gonzalez. "When Wagner's not closing, (Saito will) be closing," the manager said. "And vice versa at times, depending on who we're facing." Saito still has good stuff despite his age and will be worth a look in NL-only leagues since he'll earn occasional save chances.
News:Takashi Saito refused his minor league assignment by the Red Sox and became a free agent.
Analysis: Saito might head back to Japan, but he would be nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men if he stayed in America. Ignore him in all Fantasy leagues right now.
News: The Red Sox outrighted reliever Takashi Saito off the 40-man roster.
Analysis: Saito is nothing more than a middle reliever for the deepest of leagues that use true middle men at this point in his career. He can be ignored in Fantasy right now.
News:Evan Longoria went 2 for 6 with two homers -- including a game-ending two-run shot with two outs in the bottom of the 13th inning -- and struck out four times in the Rays' 4-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night. Longoria homered in the eighth off Daniel Bard, tying the score 2-2, then hit the tiebreaking shot off Takashi Saito five innings later.
Analysis: Bard and Saito are solid setup men, despite their failures Tuesday. Consider them in deeper leagues that use true middle men. Bard, especially, has a great young arm with tremendous upside as a late-inning reliever.
News: From The Sports Xchange: The Red Sox had a 9-1 lead in the fourth inning Tuesday, but relievers Justin Masterson, Manny Delcarmen, Hideki Okajima and Takashi Saito all faltered in a game that served as the biggest comeback in Orioles history. Kevin Youkilis and Jacoby Ellsbury both hit home runs to power Boston's offense, and a rain delay knocked John Smoltz out of the game after four innings of one-run ball.
Analysis: Masterson, Delcarmen, Okajima and Saito remain viable middle relievers in all leagues that use true middle men. Look past Tuesday night as a fluke at this point.
News: Red Sox reliever Takashi Saito pitched a scoreless inning of relief Tuesday in Washington. He allowed an earned run in his previous outing against Atlanta, which snapped a string of 12 straight scoreless outings.
Analysis: Saito, a former closer, has been rumored to be a possible trade candidate this summer and could wind up on a team that needs a closer. That would give his Fantasy value a huge boost in the second half. As it stands, he remains an AL-only option for leagues that reward the use of middle relievers.
News: Red Sox RP Takashi Saito hasn't allowed a run in his last 12 outings, spanning 11 1/3 innings.
Analysis: Saito has been the subject of trade rumors lately, and could be sent to a team that needs a closer. He remains an AL-only option for now, but definitely someone worth adding if you have a roster spot to spare, just in case he does find himself picking up saves somewhere. No guarantee he'll stay in the AL, though.
News: Red Sox setup man Takashi Saito was not used in the eighth Monday night. Instead, the Red Sox chose to go from Ramon Ramirez to Jonathan Papelbon for a five-out save. That likely makes Papelbon unavailable for a save chance Tuesday night, which could mean Saito is an option to close.
Analysis: Saito is going to get circumstantial save chances with the Red Sox, who don't like to overuse Papelbon early in the season. Consider Saito a viable middle reliever in deeper formats that use true middle men.
News: With Jonathan Papelbon getting the day off on Sunday against the Orioles, Boston RP Takashi Saito picked up his first save of the year. Saito allowed two hits and a run to score in the top of the ninth inning but struck out Gregg Zaun to end the threat and the game.
Analysis: Saito has a 6.23 ERA on the year over 4 1/3 innings. He's allowed runs in three of his four appearances with one hold and one save. Saito will not get too many save opportunities with Papelbon on the Red Sox so continue to only use him in leagues where middle relievers count for anything.
News: From the The Sports Xchange:Takashi Saito will help Jon Papelbon tremendously if his right elbow remains stable, and he appeared to be healthy during a good spring.
Analysis: Saito is a nice option in leagues that use true middle men. He is an injury risk as hit age, but he can post some strikeouts, holds and a nice ERA and WHIP for as long as he stays on the roster and off the DL.
News: Red Sox RP Takashi Saito walked one, but did not allow a hit or a run, in Friday's 5-3 win over the Marlins.
Analysis: Saito, 38, is 12-7 with 81 saves and a 1.95 ERA in three major league seasons. He has some of the best numbers of any closer during that stretch, but he obviously won't get many save opportunities with the Red Sox, barring an injury to Jonathan Papelbon. Don't bother with him outside of deeper AL-only leagues.
News: Red Sox reliever Takashi Saito made his Red Sox debut against Pittsburgh in Thursday's spring game in Fort Myers, Fla. He worked one inning, allowing one hit with two strikeouts. The 39-year-old Japanese pitcher dealt with elbow problems last season with the Dodgers and decided to forego surgery. He rehabbed his elbow during the offseason and when he arrived in camp deemed himself healthy and ready to go, according to the Providence Journal. "I'm not experiencing any problems with the elbow and I don't have any limitations on my pitches," he said. "Today, Tek actively wanted to call all of my pitches, and going forward I think I'll be using more of the fastball. The result of that today was a lot of pitches, but I did have a good feel for the ball, and I hope Tek had a good feeling for working with me as well."
Analysis: Saito showed no signs of discomfort on Thursday, and manager Terry Francona noticed. "We've been kind of easing him into it, (but) you put him in a game and here comes 93 (mph) with a pretty good breaking ball," Francona said. In three major-league seasons, all with Los Angeles, Saito, 38, is 12-7 with 81 saves and a 1.95 ERA. He has some of the best numbers of any closer during that stretch, but he obviously won't get many save opportunities with the Red Sox, barring an injury to Jonathan Papelbon. Don't bother with him outside of deeper AL-only leagues.
News: Red Sox RP Takashi Saito, the former Dodgers closer who made the NL All-Star team in 2007 and had a 2.49 ERA and 18 saves last season despite an elbow injury, says he'll have no trouble pitching on opening day. "There's nothing to worry about on the elbow," Saito said with a smile through translator Masa Hoshino.

News:Takashi Saito agreed to a one-year deal with Boston on Saturday, giving the Red Sox another veteran arm in their bullpen. Saito, who had 18 saves and a 2.49 ERA last season despite being limited by an elbow injury, became a free agent when the Los Angeles Dodgers failed to offer him a contract by the Dec. 12 deadline. The right-hander would have been eligible for salary arbitration and a raise from $2 million if he was tendered a contract.
Analysis: The 38-year-old Saito is 12-7 with 81 saves and a 1.95 ERA in three major league seasons, all with Los Angeles. Saito made the All-Star team in 2007 when he went 2-1 with 39 saves and a 1.40 ERA in 63 games. He should feel right at home in spring training with three other Japanese countrymen in Boston's camp: Daisuke Matsuzaka, Hideki Okajima and Junichi Tazawa. Saito will not be Boston's closer, however, and for that reason will have minimal appeal to just Fantasy leagues that use middle-relief men.
News: Several well-known players were among those let go by teams in the hours before the midnight deadline to offer 2009 contracts to players on rosters. Many teams didn't want to go to salary arbitration with the players and were willing to risk them leaving as free agents. Among those cut loose were Baltimore pitcher Daniel Cabrera, Dodgers reliever Takashi Saito, Houston infielder Ty Wigginton, Colorado outfielder Willy Taveras, Tampa Bay outfielder Jonny Gomes, San Diego right-hander Clay Hensley and Milwaukee left-hander Chris Capuano.
Analysis: Saito is not likely to find work as a closer out of L.A., so consider him merely an intriguing setup man for Fantasy purposes at this point. He is going to be 39 this spring and is showing signs of breaking down physically. In spurts he can be an effective late-inning reliever, but he cannot be counted on for a whole season.
News: According to the N.Y. Post, the Dodgers intend to non-tender closer Takashi Saito on Friday night, making him a free agent. Jonathan Broxton is their closer right now, but it is possible at some point later this offseason that the Dodgers could play for Trevor Hoffman and move Broxton back into the eighth inning.

News: Dodgers closer Takashi Saito saved his 18th game on Saturday against the Giants. He pitched a perfect ninth and struck out a batter.
Analysis: Saito was not expected to close down the stretch, though he did Saturday -- and might not again in 2009 -- but he is a solid middle reliever for the deeper leagues that use them at this point in his career.
News:Rich Aurilia hit a two-out, RBI single in the 11th inning Sunday, lifting the San Francisco Giants to a 1-0 victory over Los Angeles and trimming the NL West-leading Dodgers' lead over Arizona to 2½ games. Aaron Rowand started the winning rally off Takashi Saito (4-4) with a one-out single. Pinch hitter Pablo Sandoval grounded into a force play before pitcher Brad Hennessey, running for Sandoval, stole second. Eugenio Velez got an infield hit on a slow roller to short before Aurilia lined a 2-2 pitch into left field.
Analysis: Saito is not expected to close down the stretch -- and might not again in 2009 -- but he is a solid middle reliever for the deeper leagues that use them at this point in his career.
News:Takashi Saito (4-3), pitching for the third time since coming off the disabled list, worked a hitless inning to earn the win Saturday. He was sidelined for two months with a sprained ligament in his pitching elbow.
Analysis: Saito is not expected to close down the stretch -- and might not again in 2009 -- but he is a solid middle reliever for the deeper leagues that use them at this point in his career.
News: Dodgers reliever Takashi Saito made his first appearance since being diagnosed with a sprained ligament in his right elbow two months ago, pitching a scoreless eighth inning Monday at Pittsburgh. Saito, the Dodgers' closer until he was hurt, walked one and struck out two while facing four batters. Manager Joe Torre wanted to use Saito in what he called "a non-stressful situation" his first time out, and the Dodgers led 8-0 at the time. "For the first time out, and I'm sure he was anxious about it, he was fine," Torre said.
Analysis: Saito threw 13 of 21 pitches for strikes, though his velocity was mostly around 90 miles per hour, down from his mid-90s range before he left a July 12 game at Florida with elbow tightness. "I was relaxed; I had a lot of run support," Saito said. "My performance wasn't as usual, but I was relaxed out there. I usually come in close situations, that was main difference." Saito won't pitch Tuesday, but Torre hopes to use the right-hander on Wednesday -- again, Torre hopes it won't be in a close game. Until Saito starts earning saves again, he's nothing more than ERA and WHIP help in Rotisserie leagues.
News: The Los Angeles Dodgers activated closer Takashi Saito from the 60-day disabled list prior to the game with the Colorado Rockies on Saturday night. Manager Joe Torre said Saito would not be returned to the closer role right away. "Part of his success is the fact he is able to command his pitches and that may take a few outings before he is able to do that," Torre said. "We'll get him out there for an inning and see what it feels like."
Analysis: Saito had been out of action since the All-Star break with soreness in his right elbow. He had converted 17 of 20 save opportunities with a 2.18 ERA before going on the DL. Don't pick him up until the Dodgers make him closer again. Check back to see if that happens.
News: According to MLB.com, the Dodgers plan to activate RP Takashi Saito from the disabled list Saturday at Colorado. He won't work as the closer right away.
Analysis: Saito might end up taking Jonathan Broxton's place in short order, or he might just work in middle relief the rest of the season. No one can say for certain. If you have a need for saves, though, you shouldn't let him go unowned.
News: Dodgers closer Takashi Saito, who has been on the DL since July 13 with a sore right elbow, threw a simulated game Wednesday. "I thought he was very good," manager Joe Torre said. "He threw a couple of flat breaking balls, but for the most part his fastball had a lot of life to it. And a good number of his sliders were sharp. He said it's the best he's felt. And we hope to activate him this weekend."
Analysis: Saito is 3-3 with 17 saves and a 2.18 ERA in 39 games. Saito likely won't be a closer at the start of Fantasy Week 25 (Sept. 15-21), but he could be down the road. Track his progress through the weekend before considering him in any format or role.
News: RHP Takashi Saito (elbow) will throw a simulated game Wednesday and SS Rafael Furcal (lower back surgery) will take part in it. Both could be activated by the weekend or early next week.
Analysis: Saito likely won't be a closer at the start of Fantasy Week 25 (Sept. 15-21), but he could be down the road. Track his progress through the weekend before considering him in any format or role.
News: According to The Sports Xchange notes: Closer Takashi Saito threw the first of an expected two simulated games Sunday morning and came out feeling fine. If he has no residual soreness Monday, he will throw another one Tuesday or Wednesday, then probably be activated Friday.
Analysis: Saito won't be a closer in Fantasy Week 24 (Sept. 8-14), but he could be down the road again. Track his progress through the weekend before considering him for Fantasy Week 25 (Sept. 15-21).
News: Dodgers manager Joe Torre said closer Takashi Saito is scheduled to throw Thursday before pitching in a simulated game Saturday and another Tuesday or Wednesday, setting up a possible return the weekend of Sept. 13-14.
Analysis: It is likely Saito returns as a middle reliever to prove healthy and effective before he is trusted in the closer's role again in the final weeks of the season. Track his progress through Fantasy Week 24 (Sept. 8-14) before considering him.
News: According to The Sports Xchange notes: RHP Takashi Saito was moved from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL to clear a 40-man roster spot for C A.J. Ellis, whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Las Vegas. Saito still will be eligible to be activated Sept. 12 at Colorado, and there is a chance he will be.
Analysis: Saito is slated for a bullpen session Thursday, simulated games Saturday and sometime early next week, and activation after that if everything goes well. It is likely he returns as a middle reliever to prove healthy and effective before he is trusted in the closer's role again in the final weeks of the season. Track his progress through Fantasy Week 24 (Sept. 8-14) before considering him.
News: According to The Sports Xchange notes: Closer Takashi Saito, who has been out since just before the All-Star break with a sprained ligament in his right elbow, said Monday it is too soon to write him off. "I am very confident that I'm going to be back on the mound this season," Saito said, with Kenji Nimura translating. Saito has thrown fastballs off a mound and breaking balls off flat ground, all without pain, but that falls well short of what club officials need to see before Saito is activated, much less before he returns to his customary ninth-inning role. "Until he starts throwing sliders, we're not going to plan on anything," manager Joe Torre said.
Analysis: Although the Dodgers have a 10-man bullpen after adding their September call-ups, not one of the other nine is an obvious candidate to step into the closer's role if Jonathan Broxton continues to be as shaky as he was last month, when he recorded five saves, a win and three losses while blowing two save chances. Broxton has blown seven saves overall, but five of them came as a setup man before Saito was injured. Saito has 17 saves in 20 chances this year. "I can see the end of the tunnel," Saito said. "I am very optimistic." Consider Saito a DL stashee in deeper leagues, but we really think if he returns, it will be as little more than a setup man for Fantasy purposes.
News:The Sports Xchange reports Dodgers RP Takashi Saito (sprained right elbow ligament), on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to July 13, was scheduled to throw off a mound Friday but figures to be out until at least mid-September. If he has a setback, he could be facing Tommy John surgery.
Analysis: Saito might still be done for the season, so consider him nothing more than a DL stashee in deeper leagues at this point.
News: Dodgers closer Takashi Saito played catch in Los Angeles on Thursday for the first time since going on the DL with a sprained elbow ligament on July 18.
Analysis: Saito might still be done for the season, so consider him nothing more than a DL stashee in deeper leagues at this point. Jonathan Broxton is a great sleeper at the closer position in the second half and might never surrender that job back to the old the 38-year-old Saito again.
News: Dodgers manager Joe Torre said closer Takashi Saito, sidelined since the All-Star break because of a sprained ligament in his pitching elbow, will probably begin throwing late next week (Aug. 4-10). Saito isn't expected back for at least another month.
Analysis: Saito might still be done for the season, so consider him nothing more than a DL stashee in deeper leagues at this point. Jonathan Broxton is a great sleeper at the closer position in the second half and might never surrender that job back to the old Saito again.
News: The Dodgers placed veteran closer Takashi Saito on the 15-day DL with a right elbow sprain that will keep him out 6-to-8 weeks. Saito said he hopes to be pitching again well before the end of the season, then added surgery is a possibility for his ailing right elbow. "Right now, I'm under doctor's and trainer's orders to rest 10 days with no activities," Saito said through translator Acey Kohrogi, the Dodgers' director of Asian operations. "The possibility exists that (surgery) might have to happen. Right now, we're concentrating on the six weeks of rehab and how that's going. I hope to be back by the end of August." Saito was diagnosed with a sprained ligament in his pitching elbow earlier this week by a team doctor, who recommended six weeks of rehabilitation before the 38-year-old right-hander is reevaluated.

News: Los Angeles Dodgers closer Takashi Saito said he hopes to be pitching again well before the end of the season, then added that surgery is a possibility for his ailing right elbow. "Right now, I'm under doctor's and trainer's orders to rest 10 days with no activities," Saito said Thursday on a conference call through translator Acey Kohrogi, the Dodgers' director of Asian operations. Saito will be placed on the 15-day disabled list when the Dodgers return from the All-Star break Friday night in Arizona. When asked if he feared his injury could end his career, Saito replied: "I'm not able to answer that question at this time. I have no thought about (retirement) at this time. My focus is on coming back and how I can help the team." Saito, speaking from his Los Angeles home, said he's received permission to return to his native Japan for a brief visit with his family since he's unable to rehabilitate for the time being.
Analysis: Saito, 3-3 with a 2.18 ERA and 17 saves in 20 chances, was forced to come out of Saturday night's game against Florida because of what he called abnormal tightness in his elbow. He had an MRI on Monday. Saito had 39 saves and made the NL All-Star team last season. Manager Joe Torre has said Jonathan Broxton would be the team's closer in Saito's absence. Broxton, 2-2 with a 3.40 ERA in 40 games, has 46 strikeouts in 39 2-3 innings. The good news is Saito doesn't need surgery. The bad news is he's out for six weeks ... and still might end up needing surgery. If you own him in Fantasy, you need to put in a claim for Broxton immediately. The big right-hander has a 100 mph fastball and could easily end up closing for the rest of the season. Continue to stash Saito if you have the roster space to do so, but don't hold your breath for a miraculous return.
News: According to MLB.com, Dodgers closer Takashi Saito, who left Saturday's game against the Marlins because of tightness in his right elbow, has a sprained elbow ligament that he'll spend six weeks trying to rehab, hoping to avoid surgery. "It wasn't a stinging pain, but a strong tightness that got worse and worse. It was a good idea to quit," Saito said Saturday night. Jonathan Broxton will replace him as closer.

News: Dodgers closer Takashi Saito, whose ninth-inning stint on Saturday night against the Marlins was cut short because of tightness in his right elbow, will have an MRI on Monday. "I think you've got to assume the worst," manager Joe Torre said. "But with the All-Star break here, there's really no decision-making that has to be made immediately. So let's see what happens." If Saito is sidelined for an extended period of time, Jonathan Broxton is likely to assume the closer's role for the Dodgers.
Analysis: It's never a good sign to hear a manager preparing for the worst. The MRI will help clear up the situation for the Dodgers, but at this stage, Fantasy owners will want to keep Saito reserved for Fantasy Week 16 (July 14-20). Saito has not been as good in 2008 as he has been in past seasons, but he still manages to keep a low ERA and doesn't blow many save chances. He remains a high-end Fantasy RP when healthy.
News: Dodgers closer Takashi Saito left with tightness in his right elbow Saturday against the Marlins after retiring his first two batters in the ninth inning and going to a 2-2 count on Wes Helms. He retired both batters on strikeouts.
Analysis: Saito has had little aches in his arm in past seasons, so don't worry too much about this one. Hopefully, you've already stashed Jonathan Broxton in case Saito misses time, but if you haven't, do so now.
News: Dodgers closer Takashi Saito pitched a perfect ninth Wednesday against the Braves to earn his 17th save in 20 chances. Saito struck out one on the night. He needed just nine pitches and threw six of them for strikes and his ERA is 2.33.
Analysis: Saito now has five saves in July and has only allowed one earned run in his last eight appearances. He's rolling right along as the Dodgers' closer and should only get better and better numbers in the second half of the season. He's a must-start in any Fantasy league.
News: Dodgers RP Takashi Saito allowed hits to the first two batters in the ninth inning Sunday, but came back to record his 16th save in 19 chances during a 5-3 win against the Giants. Saito allowed one run and struck out one for his fifth save since June 28.
Analysis: Saito already has four saves in July and is currently on pace to have his best month of the season. He has tossed seven straight scoreless outings and has probably looked his best to date. Saito remains a high-end Fantasy RP.
News: Dodgers closer Takashi Saito pitched a perfect ninth inning Friday at San Francisco for his 15th save this season, second in two days and third in four days. He has worked six straight scoreless innings, lowering his ERA to 2.21.
Analysis: Saito has elite stuff, and the Dodgers look like they might finally start giving him opportunities. Continue to treat him as a No. 2 Fantasy option, but he has the potential to emerge as a No. 1.
News: Dodgers closer Takashi Saito allowed two hits and did not record a strikeout Thursday, but he still managed to finish off the Astros in a 5-2 victory for his 14th save of the season.
Analysis: Saito now has two saves in Fantasy Week 14 (June 30-July 6), and appears to have gotten over his poor outing on June 20 against the Indians. Saito has elite stuff even if the Dodgers don't give him opportunities, so continue to treat him as a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Dodgers RP Takashi Saito pitched a perfect 11th inning during Tuesday's 7-6 win against the Astros for his 13th save. Saito needed 12 pitches to retire the side, which included a strikeout of Brad Ausmus. Saito has three saves in the last 10 days.
Analysis: The Dodgers have not been winning at the pace many expected in 2008 and that's a large reason why Saito has just 13 saves. He has also blown three chances after having wasting just six in his previous two seasons. Saito has elite stuff even if the Dodgers don't give him opportunities, so treat him as a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Dodgers closer Takashi Saito preserved a lead against a particularly motivated Angels squad Saturday, picking up his 12th save. He recorded two strikeouts but allowed one hit and one walk. By not scoring a run, the Angels lost a game in which their pitching staff allowed zero hits.
Analysis: Talk about embarrassing. You hate to say baseball players don't ever try their hardest, but you know no Angel left anything on the field during that ninth inning. Saito earned that 12th save; now, if he could only earn a few more. He has elite stuff even if the Dodgers don't give him opportunities, so treat him as a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Dodgers closer Takashi Saito pitched a perfect ninth inning Friday against the Angels, mowing down all three batters he faced. He lowered his ERA to 2.48.
Analysis: Saito has been far from a high-end Fantasy RP in 2008. Two reasons: The Dodgers just aren't giving him enough chances to close out games, and he isn't as dominant as he was the last two seasons. Still, he is keeping Fantasy owners happy with 45 strikeouts in 32 2/3 innings.
News: Dodgers RP Takashi Saito pitched a perfect ninth inning Sunday against the Indians for his 11th save during a 4-3 win. Saito needed just 10 pitches to retire the side after blowing Friday's game, allowing three hits, two walks and two runs in one inning. He struck out one Sunday.
Analysis: Saito has been far from a high-end Fantasy RP in 2008. Two reasons: The Dodgers just aren't giving him enough chances to close out games and he isn't as dominant as he was the last two seasons. Still, he is keeping Fantasy owners happy with 42 strikeouts in 31 2/3 innings.
News: Dodgers closer Takashi Saito blew a tie game in the top of the 10th inning Friday against the Indians. He allowed two runs on three hits and two walks and ultimately suffered the loss.
Analysis: Saito has struggled for saves this season with only 10 so far, and meltdowns like Friday's obviously don't help his Fantasy appeal. He's no more than a No. 2 Fantasy closer.
News: Dodgers RP Takashi Saito picked up his 10th save of the season Thursday in a 7-4 win over the Reds. Saito gave up one hit and struck out one.
Analysis: Saito had been in a bit of a drought heading into Fantasy Week 12 (June 16-22), but now he has two saves this week. Los Angeles has now won three games in a row, so get Saito active in the majority of formats while the going is good.
News: Dodgers RP Takashi Saito struck out a pair in the ninth inning Tuesday against the Reds while getting his ninth save in 12 chances during a 3-1 win. The right-hander has gotten 13 of his last 15 outs by strikeout. He allowed one hit while earning his first save since May 21.
Analysis: The Dodgers have been pretty awful as of late and Saito hasn't been getting many chances to close out games. Well, at least he has been striking out hitters for Fantasy owners. The Dodgers should be at least a .500 team in 2008 and Saito remains a high-end Fantasy RP.
News: Dodgers RP Takashi Saito took the hill Saturday in a non-save situation against the Tigers. He pitched in the eighth inning as L.A. trailed 11-7. Saito struck out the side, but not before the first three hitters all reached base and produced one run. Saito doesn't have a save since May 21.
Analysis: Saito has allowed five hits and two runs in four relief innings in June. He does have 11 strikeouts in that span, but with no saves, Fantasy owners are still feeling the hurt. The Dodgers have struggled to give him save opportunities, but you have to think his luck will turn eventually. Saito remains a No. 1 Fantasy closer.
News: Dodgers closer Takashi Saito pitched a scoreless ninth inning in a loss Sunday against the Cubs, allowing one hit and recording three strikeouts. He has pitched two scoreless innings since suffering defeat Thursday.
Analysis: Saito doesn't have a save since May 21. The Dodgers have struggled to give him save opportunities, but you have to think his luck will turn eventually. He remains a No. 1 Fantasy closer.
News:Kosuke Fukudome had an RBI single with one out in the ninth inning against Takashi Saito to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday night. Ryan Theriot opened the ninth with a double down the right-field line against Saito (3-2). One out later, Aramis Ramirez was hit by a pitch on the hand -- or at least umpire Eric Cooper thought so -- and manager Joe Torre argued to no avail along with catcher Russell Martin. Fukudome followed with a single to right field on a 2-2 pitch. Saito retired the next two hitters, but the damage was done. He struck out two in the loss.
Analysis: Saito doesn't have a save since May 21. He has now allowed seven runs (six earned) in 23 games this season after allowing a total of 10 runs in 63 games last season. He still has a respectable 2.19 ERA. The Dodgers have struggled to give him save opportunities, but you have to think his luck will turn eventually. Saito remains a No. 1 Fantasy closer.
News: The Dodgers used closer Takashi Saito in the ninth inning Friday at the Mets even though they had a four-run lead. He recorded one walk and one strikeout in one scoreless inning.
Analysis: Saito lowered his ERA to 1.90 with the performance. He has only eight saves because the Dodgers have struggled to give him opportunities, but you have to think his luck will turn eventually. He remains a No. 1 Fantasy closer.
News: Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday, the Cubs tied it against Dodgers RP Takashi Saito on Geovany Soto's bases-loaded sacrifice fly. Saito, who blew his third save in 11 chances, walked Ryan Theriot and Aramis Ramirez in the ninth before Kosuke Fukudome reached on an infield single to load the bases when 1B James Loney made a nice diving stop on his high hopper. Fukudome was ruled safe at first after Saito raced over to cover the bag and take the flip from Loney. Soto then hit the sacrifice fly to tie the game and pinch-runner Ronny Cedeno advanced to third before Saito retired Mark DeRosa on a fly ball to end the inning.
Analysis: Saito had four blown saves in 43 chances last season and just six in his previous two seasons combined. He is already halfway to that mark in 2008 and you wonder when the Jonathan Broxton to closer rumors will surface. For now, Saito is keeping his job and remains a high-end Fantasy RP.
News: Dodgers closer Takashi Saito picked up a win instead of his typical save during an extra-inning affair Sunday against the Cardinals. He struck out five in two shutout innings, allowing two hits.
Analysis: Saito has looked dominant as ever at age 38, though his Fantasy owners would have hoped he'd have more saves than eight by now. His rate should improve in the coming months, so keep him active in all leagues.
News: Dodgers RP Takashi Saito pitched a perfect ninth inning during Wednesday's 5-2 win against the Reds for his seventh save in nine attempts. Saito was on the mound for a third straight day. He needed just 13 pitches for the save, which included a seven-pitch strikeout of Brandon Phillips. Saito has one win and two saves since Monday.
Analysis: Well, the Reds got a heavy dose of Saito and probably could go without seeing him the rest of the season. Fantasy owners are glad to see Saito thriving as he builds his saves total. He has a 1.83 ERA and continues to look dominant. He remains a high-end Fantasy RP.
News: Dodgers RP Takashi Saito finished off Tuesday's 4-1 win against the Reds for his seventh save in nine chances. Joe Beimel gave up a two-out RBI single in the ninth before Saito recorded the final out, getting Ryan P. Freel to strike out. Saito has just four saves in May.
Analysis: Saito pitched a perfect ninth inning Monday against the Reds and earned the win after Blake DeWitt's bases-loaded RBI single in the bottom of the inning sent L.A. to a 6-5 victory. Analysis: Saito is back on track. Unless he suffers a setback, it appears he is ready to resume his role as full-time closer. He is a must-start Fantasy option when healthy.
News: Dodgers RP Takashi Saito (hamstring) was back on the mound for Friday's game against the Blue Jays. He came into the game with the Dodgers leading 2-1 in the ninth inning. He allowed one hit, one walk and the tying run to cross the plate. He finished the inning, but did not come out for the 10th inning.
Analysis: Saito looked a little rusty Friday after not having pitched in a few days. Perhaps he wasn't ready to test his hamstring. However, unless he suffers a setback, it appears he is ready to resume his role as closer. He is a must-start Fantasy option when healthy.
News: Takashi Saito practiced running from the pitcher's mound to first base prior to Thursday's game and came away without any discomfort in his strained left hamstring. He will return to the bullpen for Friday's game. "I'm not exactly sure where this came from," he said of the injury. "It could just be aches and pains of the season that everybody goes through."
Analysis: Jonathan Broxton was terrible in Thursday's outing and has not looked comfortable at all in the closer's role in Saito's absence. Keep Saito reserved in all Fantasy leagues until he can officially return and prove his health.
News: Jonathan Broxton (2-2) faced nine batters, allowing four earned runs and five hits and walking two while retiring just one batter on Thursday at San Diego. Manager Grady Little said he had no intention of relieving Broxton. Closer Takashi Saito was unavailable due to a strained hamstring. "I wasn't going to use Saito there," Little said. "There are 100 games left. It doesn't make sense." Saito is expected to be available Friday night at home against Toronto.

News: Takashi Saito threw about 21 pitches off the bullpen mound at Petco Park on Wednesday, and he could be pitching in a game at Dodger Stadium as early as Friday, according to the Orange County Register. Saito has been out since leaving Sunday's game because of tightness in his left hamstring and has been slowly working his way back. He played catch on a flat surface before Tuesday's game, and the next step was for him to throw off of a mound. After six pitches, he turned to Dodgers head trainer Stan Conte and gave him a thumbs-up sign.
Analysis: It appears safe to get Saito back in your lineup as early as Friday. Hopefully he's able to go and doesn't suffer any setbacks.
News: Closer Takashi Saito was due to throw off a mound during batting practice to test his strained hamstring. Manager Grady Little said Saito definitely wasn't going to be available Wednesday night at San Diego.

Analysis: Keep Saito reserved in all Fantasy leagues until he can officially return and prove his health.
News: Dodgers RP Takashi Saito was pulled from the ninth inning of Sunday's game in Pittsburgh with a tight left hamstring, but the problem is not believed to be serious. After getting the Pirates' Jose Bautista to swing and miss on a high fastball that made the count 2-2 with one out Saito walked off the back of the mound in apparent discomfort and began talking to second baseman Jeff Kent and shortstop Rafael Furcal. Following a brief conversation with a trainer, Saito left and was replaced by Joe Beimel. The left-hander retired Bautista on a flyball before getting Jose Castillo to bounce out to the mound and complete the Dodgers' 5-4 victory.
Analysis: "He's mature enough to let us know as soon as something like that happens," manager Grady Little said. "I don't know how serious it is, but we feel like he informed us in time (to prevent a severe injury). We'll look at it tomorrow and see how it is, but it's a plus he told us that quickly." Saito returned to the hill Friday after receiving a few days to rest from shoulder stiffness. Saito is day to day at this time and is a risky Fantasy option for Week 10 (June 4-10). He is a must-start when healthy. Beimel did a nice job on Sunday, but Jonathan Broxton will likely be called on to fill in for Saito in the meantime. He pitched a scoreless eighth inning Sunday and was obviously not available to close once Saito left the game.
News: Dodgers RP Takashi Saito left with an apparent injury in the bottom of the ninth inning during Sunday's game against the Pirates. With one out, Jose Bautista swung through a fastball to make the count 2-2. Saito then walked off the back of the mound in discomfort, bringing out a trainer. Saito left the game after a brief conversation. Saito was trying for his 17th save in 17 chances this season and his 27th successive conversion since last year. Joe Beimel was given as much time as he needed to warm up before he retired Bautista and pinch-hitter Jose Castillo for his first save.
Analysis: Saito returned to the hill Friday after receiving a few days to rest from shoulder stiffness. Don't be surprised if that is the culprit once again. Saito is day to day at this time and is a risky Fantasy option for Week 10 (June 4-10). He is a must-start when healthy. Beimel did a nice job on Sunday, but Jonathan Broxton will likely be called on to fill in for Saito. He pitched a scoreless eighth inning Sunday and was obviously not available to close once Saito left the game.
News: Takashi Saito has converted 40 of his first 42 save opportunities since he broke into the majors last season. His save percentage of .952 surpasses that of Eric Gagne, who had 39 saves after his first 42 opportunities. "In my mind, Gagne is a better pitcher than I am," Saito said through a translator. "I really had no idea that a record was around and for me to pass it, I'm happy that I did it but it's not something that I try to do. I try to get outs."
Analysis: Saito has been one of the top Fantasy closers in the game since taking over the job last season and has been a great value to his Fantasy owners. That continues to be the case in all Fantasy formats that reward saves.

He has converted 24 consecutive save opportunities dating to last season.

News: Dodgers SP Jason Schmidt, who finished with five strikeouts, gave way to Joe Beimel in the sixth, Jonathan Broxton in seventh and Rudy Seanez in the eighth during Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Brewers. Saito nearly couldn't hold on. He got out of the eighth after giving up a two-run double to Craig Counsell, but J.J. Hardy led off the ninth with a solo homer and Prince Fielder doubled. Saito worked 1 2/3 innings, allowing three hits, one run, while striking out one.

News: Dodgers closer Takashi Saito made his spring training debut Wednesday, pitching a scoreless fifth inning. "I'm really happy with everything today. I was back pitching in a Dodger uniform. I felt also happy that my calf was healed and I was able to pitch without limitations," said Saito, sidelined earlier by a sore right calf muscle. Saito threw 10 pitches, seven for strikes, as he faced four hitters. Skip Schumaker, the inning's first batter, hit a slow ground ball toward the second baseman. Saito immediately broke for first base in anticipation of fielding a throw for the out. "The trainers told me to take it easy out there, but my reactions sort of took over," he said. "There were no problems at all and I felt very relieved after that first batter so that I could do whatever play was called upon me to do."
Analysis: Saito is a top 15-20 closer on Draft Day in all leagues. He's 37, though, and has never gone through a full big-league season as a closer. Consider taking the flier on Jonathan Broxton as insurance in deeper leagues.

He's 37, though, and has never gone through a full big league season as a closer. Consider grabbing him among the top 20 at the position.
News: Catcher Russell Martin and outfielder Andre Ethier are coming off impressive rookie seasons, and first baseman-outfielder James Loney and outfielder Matt Kemp are another pair of highly regarded young players who could make an impact this year. "We had seven rookies on our postseason roster," GM Ned Colletti said, referring to Martin, Ethier, Loney, Takashi Saito, Chad Billingsley, Hong-Chi Kuo and reliever Jonathan Broxton. "How many teams do that? How many teams have seven rookies that play during the season? We'll be better for that experience."
Analysis: Martin is potentially a top-five option at his position this season, while Ethier, Loney, Kemp, Billingsley and Broxton will be possible overlooked sophomores on Draft Day. Saito already has top 15 value as a closer and a vetern import.
News: RHP Takashi Saito suspended his offseason running program because of tightness in his right calf. He doesn't feel the problem is serious and expects to be ready to pitch in time for the Dodgers' first spring game. "It bothered me in Japan," he said through a translator. "I was running one day and then when I came to L.A., I tried to test it out again and it just bothered me a little bit. It's nothing really that I need to worry about. It's just a precaution that we're shutting it down for a little bit."

Analysis: Saito is a top 15-20 closer on Draft Day in all leagues. He's 37, though, and has never gone through a full big league season as a closer. Consider taking the flier on Broxton as insurance in deeper leagues. Lowe has little chance of moving to relief, but Penny was throwing 100 MPH peas in the All-Star Game last year, leading scouts to believe he could become a dominant closer. That should increase Penny's Fantasy intrigue a touch in the middle rounds on Draft Day.
News: Takashi Saito, who recorded a franchise rookie-record 24 saves for the Dodgers last season after beginning the year in the minors, agreed Tuesday to $1 million, one-year contract. The 36-year-old right-hander was signed to a minor-league deal last February after spending 14 seasons in the Japanese major leagues, where he was a four-time All-Star. After being recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on April 5, he appeared in 72 games, going 6-2 with a 2.07 ERA. He struck out 107 in 78 1/3 innings and blew only two save opportunities. "Takashi came on to be one of the key players in last year's success," Dodgers GM Ned Colletti said. "He stepped into a big role in the second half and handled it well. We're glad he's back." Saito, who tied for seventh in the NL Rookie of the Year vote, worked 2 2/3 hitless innings in the NLDS against the Mets.
Analysis: Saito took over as the Dodgers' closer May 15, and allowed only 12 earned runs in 58 1/3 innings for a 1.85 ERA over his final 53 appearances. It likely makes him the favorite to close again in 2007, assuming they don't re-sign injured ex-Cy Young closer Eric Gagne (elbow, back) this winter. As a closer, Saito will be a sleeper viable for any Fantasy league on Draft Day, but track the news in the coming weeks.
News: Brandon Webb of the Diamondbacks won a wide-open race for the NL Cy Young Award, beating out San Diego closer Trevor Hoffman on Tuesday. One of six pitchers who tied for the league lead with a pedestrian total of 16 wins, Webb received 15 of 32 first-place votes and 103 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Hoffman, who broke the career saves record last season, got 12 first-place votes and 77 points. Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter, last year's winner, finished third with two first-place votes and 63 points. Houston's Roy Oswalt, who led the NL with a 2.98 ERA, got the other three first-place tallies and came in fourth. Carlos Zambrano, Billy Wagner, John Smoltz and Takashi Saito also received votes, finishing fifth through eighth.
Analysis: Webb, who went 16-8 with a 3.10 ERA and made his first All-Star team, threw a career-best 235 innings, which ranked second in the NL. The 27-year-old sinkerballer tied Carpenter for the league lead with three shutouts and both had five complete games, good for second in the NL. The 39-year-old Hoffman finished with a league-leading 46 saves in 51 chances for the Padres. He has 482 career saves, breaking Lee Smith's previous mark of 478. Hoffman went 0-2 with a 2.14 ERA in 63 innings spanning 65 appearances. He was listed second on three ballots and third on eight. Carpenter will be drafted highest next season, but Webb clearly has become a top five Fantasy option. Hoffman remains among the top 10 closers.

News: Hanley Ramirez of the Marlins won a tight race for NL Rookie of the Year. Ramirez beat out Nationals 3B Ryan Zimmerman by only four points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. The speedy shortstop got 14 of 30 first-place votes and finished with 105 points. Zimmerman received 10 first-place votes and totaled 101 points. Three of the top four NL finishers were Marlins. Second baseman Dan Uggla came in third, getting the other six first-place votes, and pitcher Josh Johnson was fourth.
Analysis: All of these NL rookies are solid picks after the top veterans are off the board on Draft Day.
News: The Dodgers have a $12 million option on Eric Gagne but are expected to buy out his contract and try and sign him at a lower cost. Takashi Saito, a 36-year-old rookie, did an exceptional job as Gagne's replacement, recording 24 saves in 26 chances. "We've got free agents who are good players and great people," GM Ned Colletti said. "You never have enough pitching. I think if we add another pitcher or two to the group we have, we'll be in pretty good shape."
Analysis: Gagne is an injury-risk sleeper for 2007, especially if he's given a shot to close again. Track his progress in spring before considering him a risk worth taking, though. Saito proved to be a solid closer or setup man, but you will not be able to count on him as the closer unless Gagne officially goes elsewhere in free agency.

"Right now, he's still not able to throw a bullpen," Little told the team's official site. "That's not something we like." Rookie Takaski Saito will serve as the team's closer in his absence.

News: Takashi Saito got the last three outs for his fourth save in four chances on Sunday at Colorado.
Analysis: Gagne could be headed back to the DL as the team will play it cautious in his rehab. Consider Saito a viable source of saves in deeper leagues for Fantasy Week 11 (June 12-18).
News: There was no change in the status of RHP Eric Gagne, who experienced some pain in his right shoulder while throwing before Friday's game. "Nothing has changed and all we can do is give him some rest," Little said. "We'll have to see over the next few days how he is before we make any decision." Takashi Saito will serve as the Dodgers' closer in his absence.

News: The Dodgers activated closer Eric Gagne Tuesday but announced he began serving a two-game suspension and will not join the team until Thursday in Los Angeles. Fill-in closer Danny Baez, who picked up the victory Tuesday night, has blown five saves in 14 chances. Overall, the Dodgers have eight blown saves in 19 opportunities this season. Takashi Saito finished the game Tuesday and will have Wednesday's game to close if the opportunity presents itself.
Analysis: We think Takashi Saito would be the Dodgers' fall-back option if Gagne is not effective. Considered a middle reliever for deeper NL-only Rotisserie leagues beginning Fantasy Week 10 (June 4-11). We say Gagne is an all-league starter again, but let's see how he does first.
News: Manager Clint Hurdle had his own take on the delivery of Los Angeles RHP Takashi Saito. "He looks like a Jig Saw puzzle," Hurdle said. "He throws with a lot of hesitations and body movement." The Los Angeles Times reports Saito might earn the occasional save chance until Eric Gagne (elbow) is healthy enough to return sometime in June. Saito will split the role with Danys Baez and Joe Beimel, as manager Grady Little struggles to find a combination which works in the bullpen.
Analysis: Saito is a solid flier to take in deeper leagues if you're desperate for saves. The rookie import is a solid middle-relief option even if he's serving as a setup man.

Analysis: Saito worked two innings of relief at Colorado on Monday to get the save, but he also allowed a solo home run. He is a decent short-term option in larger NL-only formats, but should be avoided in all mixed formats despite an occasional save opportunity.
News: Saito allowed a solo home run to Colorado's Matt Holliday on Monday night in Denver, but that was the only hit he allowed in two innings of work as he picked up his first-career save.
Analysis: After the game, Little indicated Saito and Baez would share the closer's role until Eric Gagne is ready to return from elbow surgery early next month. "Danys and Saito are both important parts of this pitching staff," Little said. "We're going to mix and match here until Gagne gets back in a couple weeks." Saito has been a decent contributor in larger Roto leagues, especially for help in the ERA and WHIP categories, and now he'll get some saves, too. Keep him active in deeper leagues.
News: Takashi Saito (3-2) pitched a perfect eighth inning for the victory Tuesday.
Analysis: Saito (3-2, 3.24) has been a solid Fantasy rookie, especially for a middle reliever. Consider him an option in that role in deeper Rotisserie leagues.
News: In a relief appearance, Takashi Saito pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing three hits, two earned runs and two walks with a strikeout, raising his ERA to 1.98.
Analysis: Saito is a considerable option in deeper NL-only Rotisserie leagues if you need a good middle reliever.
News: Tim Hamulack pitched a perfect seventh, Takashi Saito a perfect eighth and Danys Baez a perfect ninth for his seventh save in eight chances at the Padres Friday.
Analysis: Saito has a 0.75 ERA this season, making him worth ownership in NL-only leagues.
News: MLB.com reported that Dodgers manager Grady Little likes what he has seen from Takashi Saito and will use him as both a set-up man and as someone to get LA out of mid-inning jams. "Sometimes you save the game in the sixth or seventh inning," said Little. "We just have to be careful we don't use him too much."
Analysis: Saito's stats should be in-line with your typical middle reliever. Don't chase him down unless you're in need of a good middle reliever.
News: Surgery on Eric Gagne's right elbow nerve was termed a success by doctors and he could be back in action in two months, MLB.com reported Friday. Drs. Frank Jobe and Ralph Gambardella removed the sensory nerve just under the skin running along the medial side of Gagne's forearm. In a test Wednesday night, it was determined that the nerve was causing Gagne pain while throwing. Gagne will be allowed to resume throwing in about three weeks with a possible return to action in eight weeks. He will be placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Saturday, and the Dodgers will purchase the contract of 36-year-old right-hander Takashi Saito from Triple-A Las Vegas.
Analysis: Saito agreed to a minor league contract with the Dodgers in February. He spent most of his 14-year career with Yokohama Baystars in Japan's Central League, compiling an 87-78 record with 48 saves. Saito had a 4.09 ERA in 11 innings for the Dodgers during the exhibition season. He'll have minimal value as a middle reliever.

Saito had a 4.09 ERA in 11 innings for the Dodgers during the exhibition season. Baez is the closer, so Saito will work out of the middle innings most likely.
News: The Dodgers optioned OF Andre Ethier to Triple-A Las Vegas of the PCL. Also, they reassigned RHP Takashi Saito to their minor league camp.
Analysis: Saito, who spent last season with the Yokohama BayStars (3-4 with a 3.82 ERA in 21 games), was competing for a bullpen spot this spring. He would be nothing more than a low-end middle reliever for the deepest of NL-only leagues if he were to get a call-up.
News: RHP Takashi Saito had impressed Dodgers manager Grady Little with his performance in the late innings of some early spring games. Against the Red Sox on Tuesday, Little sent Saito out in the third inning to see how the Japanese reliever would do against a better group of hitters. He didn't do as well, giving up a leadoff home run to Boston's Alex Gonzalez, a single to Mark Loretta and a double to Trot Nixon before getting out of the inning.

News: Takashi Saito was signed to a minor league contract by the L.A. Dodgers with a non-roster invitation to spring training. The right-handed Saito, 35, is 87-80 with 48 saves and a 3.80 ERA in 339 games since 1992 in Japanese baseball.
Analysis: Saito spent last season with the Yokohama BayStars, going 3-4 with a 3.82 ERA in 21 games. He will warrant little consideration in drafts.
