Abreu was cut loose a few weeks ago, and no other team moved to pick him up. He'll provide minor-league depth for the club at this point. Abreu hit .238/.331/.336 over 122 at-bats.

Abreu went a perfect 4 for 4 during the game. He doubled in his first at-bat, and added three singles over his next three appearances. On top of the four hits, Abreu finished with two runs scored and two RBI. Abreu is now hitting .319 over 72 at-bats.

Abreu gave the Mets an early lead with a two-run shot in the first inning. It was all he managed to provide in the extra-innings loss, as he finished the game 1 for 5. Abreu has appeared in four games since he recall this week, and he has two hits in 10 at-bats.

Abreu was cut by the Phillies after hitting .244 in 41 at-bats. Despite some of those struggles, Abreu received some positive reports from scouts. He would either provide outfielder depth at Triple-A, or could be used as a left-handed bat off the bench.

"Bobby was a crapshoot when he came in," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "He was coming in after not playing [in the big leagues last season]. ... So far, he's played pretty darn well. He's at least putting himself in position to battle for a job, and that's all he really wanted. Nothing has been etched in stone, as far as him making the club, but he's played well for us."

(1/21/2014) The Phillies announced Tuesday they signed veteran outfielder Bobby Abreu to a minor-league contract, which includes an invitation to spring training as a non-roster player.

Abreu was signed after a strong showing in the Venezuelan Winter League. He hit .322 with a .416 on-base percentage, 16 extra-base hits and 28 RBI in 50 games for Leones del Caracas. He hit .395 with runners in scoring position.

(1/21/2014) The Phillies are looking for a left-handed bat off the bench and are showing interest in former outfielder Bobby Abreu, multiple sources told CSNPhilly.com. Philadelphia general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. did not deny gathering information on the veteran outfielder, who last played in the majors in 2012 and played for the Phillies from 1998-2006.

"We’re looking at all the left-handed bats still out there and he’s one of them," Amaro said of Abreu, who has spent the offseason playing winter ball in Venezuela. "Bobby has had a nice winter season. We have decent reports on him. We’ll see. We’ll see whether he’s a viable option."

Abreu last played in the majors in 2012. The 39-year-old outfielder and 17-year MLB veteran is batting .322 with a .416 on-base percentage, .461 slugging percentage and .877 OPS in 50 games in the Venezuelan winter league. He has three triples, three home runs, 10 doubles and 28 RBI.

(4/16/2013) Free agent outfielder Bobby Abreu plans to take this season off after failing to land a contract this winter, but he's hoping to make a comeback in 2014, ESPN reports. 

The two-time All-Star who has 2,437 career hits plans to play winter ball for the Leones del Caracas beginning in October. 

"Bobby still thinks he has something left to offer," said Peter Greenberg, Abreu's agent. "He still thinks he can help somebody, and he has some personal milestones that would probably be nice to cross."

Abreu needs 13 home runs and a stolen base to become a 300-400 player. He would join only Barry and Bobby Bonds on that list.
