Bobby Abreu looking at 2014 comeback

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(4/16/2013) Free agent outfielder Bobby Abreu plans to take this season off after failing to land a contract this winter, but he's hoping to make a comeback in 2014, ESPN reports.

The two-time All-Star who has 2,437 career hits plans to play winter ball for the Leones del Caracas beginning in October.

"Bobby still thinks he has something left to offer," said Peter Greenberg, Abreu's agent. "He still thinks he can help somebody, and he has some personal milestones that would probably be nice to cross."

Abreu needs 13 home runs and a stolen base to become a 300-400 player. He would join only Barry and Bobby Bonds on that list.

Abreu in Miami state of mind

(1/20/2013) The Miami Herald reported on Sunday that outfielder Bobby Abreu "would love to play" for the Marlins in 2013. Abreu, a Miami resident, batted just .242 with three home runs and 24 RBI in 100 games between the Angels and Dodgers last season.

BoSox work out Abreu

(12/31/2012) Multiple sources reported Monday that the Red Sox worked out free agent Bobby Abreu in Venezuela last week. The club also had him take grounds at first base, a position Abreu has never played.
