Henry Blanco retires, joins Diamondbacks coaching staff

(3/31/2014) Catcher Henry Blanco announced his retirement Monday and accepted a position on the coaching staff of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Blanco closes out a 16-year playing career with a .223/.288/.361 line as well as 72 home runs and 298 RBI in 2,761 at-bats for 11 different teams.


Tuffy Gosewisch beats out Henry Blanco for backup catching duties

(3/29/2014) Diamondbacks catcher Tuffy Gosewisch beat out veteran Henry Blanco for the team's backup catching duties, MLB.com reports.

Gosewisch slashed .316/.316/.579 with one home run and four RBI in 19 Cactus League at-bats. Blanco will use the next 24 hours to search for a big-league job. If he's unable to find a team to play for, he'll likely become Arizona's seventh coach.

Diamondbacks sign four to minor-league deals

(12/21/2013) The Diamondbacks have signed catcher Henry Blanco, infielder Andy Marte and pitchers Bradley Blanks and Anthony Collazo to minor-league deals, Baseball America reports.

Blanco, 42, hit .142/.228/.246 with three home runs and 14 RBI in 134 at-bats between the Blue Jays and Mariners last season. Marte hit .313/.373/.536 with 25 home runs and 92 RBI in 463 at-bats between the independent Atlantic League and Triple-A.

Blanks went 5-1 with a 1.38 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 21:8 K:BB ratio in 32 2/3 innings in the independent American Association last season. Collazo went 3-2 with a 3.33 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 55:23 K:BB ratio in 48 2/3 innings in the independent Frontier League.

(10/10/2013) Mariners catcher Henry Blanco has declined his outright assignment and elected to become a free agent, MLB.com reports.

The 16-year veteran hit .142/.228/.246 with three home runs and 14 RBI in 134 at-bats between the Mariners and Blue Jays in 2013. He has played for 11 major-league teams, with his only stint of longer than two years with one team coming with the Cubs from 2005 to 2008.

Blanco finished 1 for 3 with the two-run blast. The 41-year-old backup is hitting .182/.265/.330.

(6/15/2013) Mariners catcher Henry Blanco homered in his first game with his new club Saturday against the A's.

Blanco broke a scoreless game with a grand slam in the sixth inning off starter A.J. Griffin. He finished 1 for 4 with a run scored and four RBI in a 4-0 win. The 41-year-old veteran is hitting .190 with a home run in 42 at-bats in the majors.

Blanco recently was released by the Blue Jays, but he didn't stay unemployed for long. The Mariners designated Kelly Shoppach for assignment to make room for Blanco. Blanco will likely back up rookie Mike Zunino. 

Blanco hit .184/.262/.263 in 38 at-bats this season.

Blanco has never been an offensive threat, and was hitting just .184/.262/.263 in 38 at-bats this year. While he's regarded as a strong defensive catcher, the team is promoting Josh Thole, who has experience catching knuckle-baller R.A. Dickey.

(5/6/2013) Blue Jays manager John Gibbons gave a rare start to veteran Henry Blanco behind the plate over J.P. Arencibia Monday with Mark Buehrle starting in Tampa Bay, MLB.com reports. 

Gibbons would like to give Blanco a shot to help reverse Buehrle's struggles. Monday was the first time that Blanco caught anyone but R.A. Dickey this season. 

"I just wanted to run one game like that and see," Gibbons said. "Mark, it has been a tough go for him, and we'll change up the catchers to see if that does anything. [J.P.'s] not happy, I didn't expect him to be. But it's just something I want to look at tonight."

(4/6/2013) Blue Jays catcher Henry Blanco is scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Red Sox with R.A. Dickey on the mound, and if he proves capable of handling Dickey's knuckleball, he could become Dickey's full-time catcher.

"We'll see how that goes," manager John Gibbons told MLB.com. "That won't be the only factor, but if everything is real smooth and everything goes well, I'd be crazy not to."

Blanco has yet to play in a regular-season game in 2013 after hitting .286/.333/.400 in 39 plate appearances during spring training.

J.P. Arencibia was originally expected to get another crack at catching the knuckleballer but manager John Gibbons has decided to go with Blanco, who was brought in for the very purpose of handling the tough-to-catch 2012 National League Cy Young award winner.
