Casanova would later add his second double of the season and finish 2-for-4 with two runs and one walk. Casanova has three multi-hit games in his last seven appearances.

(4/27/2008) The Mets knocked out John Smoltz after four innings in his first shaky outing of the season and got a three-hit game from backup catcher Raul Casanova. Smoltz (3-2) came in having allowed just two runs in four games. He gave up more than that in the first 1 1/3 innings Sunday. The odds didn't exactly favor a home run in his second-inning matchup with Casanova, who has been pressed into action with Brian Schneider hospitalized with an infected thumb. Smoltz hadn't allowed a homer in more than 24 innings this season. Casanova hadn't homered since July 25, when he was playing for Tampa. He snapped both those streaks with a two-run shot that put the Mets up 3-0. Smoltz allowed four runs and seven hits in his shortest outing of the season.

(4/24/2008) The New York Post reports that Mets C Brian Schneider has been sent back to New York to have an infected left thumb examined by team doctors. Gustavo Molina is expected to take his spot on the roster and will back up Raul Casanova.

(4/21/2008) Mets C Brian Schneider, who bruised his right forearm when he was hit by a foul ball Saturday night, was out of the lineup for a second straight game Monday against the Cubs with Raul Casanova getting the start. Casanova finished the night hitless in three at-bats with two strikeouts.
