Indians hope Jason Giambi will play again this season

(7/12/2014) Indians designated hitter Jason Giambi remains without a timetable, but manager Terry Francona believes he'll be able to play again this season, MLB.com reports. Giambi has been sidelined since June 11 due to knee inflammation. On Saturday, he was placed on the 60-day disabled list.

"We've actually talked to G, probably will again," Francona said. "It's a situation we knew when we signed G. Fortunately, he gets it. Not all players do. He always knows that the team comes first."

Giambi is dealing with knee inflammation. He was placed on the disabled list in order to make room for Nick Swisher, who has returned from a knee issue. Giambi is hitting just .128 in 47 at-bats.

"I just had to be 100 percent. It was good," Giambi said. "I just needed to take a step back so the ballclub could move forward, basically. It was the right decision for the ballclub."

Giambi is already feeling better just five days after being placed on the DL with a strained right calf. He could be back in the minimum amount of time needed.

The Indians purchased the contracts of reliever Scott Atchison, DH Jason Giambi and outfielder Nyjer Morgan. They also placed Michael Bourn (left hamstring strain) and Giambi (rib fracture) on the 15-day disabed list.

Pitchers Frank Herrmann and Colt Hynes were designated for assignment. Outfielder Matt Carson and infielder Ryan Rohlinger were reassigned to minor-league camp.

The 43-year-old Giambi could receive more at-bats this year than last, when he hit a quite productive .189 with nine home runs, including two critical game-winners to help the team earn a playoff spot, and 31 RBI. The declaration that Carlos Santana will start at third base leaves Giambi as the only viable left-handed DH.
