Indians unlikely to bring back Jason Giambi next year

(11/1/2014) The Indians are unlikely to bring back veteran Jason Giambi next year, according to the Northeast Ohio Media Group.

The 43-year-old hit just .133 over 60 at-bats last season. While general manager Chris Antonetti said he wouldn't completely rule out a reunion, he added that Giambi is a tough fit on the roster at this point. Giambi had been a coaching candidate a few offseasons ago, and could look to go that route if this is the end of his playing career.

"I'm moving around fine. I feel good," Giambi said Friday. "But, unless something happens, I'm going to probably assume it'll be in September."

"It could be before September," manager Terry Francona said. "But, that'd be at the latest. I'd love to get him back sooner, just because I'd like to look out for him, but we'll see. I know it's tough, but the good thing is he has handled it really well."

Giambi has been on the disabled list since mid-June with knee inflammation.

"We've actually talked to G, probably will again," Francona said. "It's a situation we knew when we signed G. Fortunately, he gets it. Not all players do. He always knows that the team comes first."

Giambi is dealing with knee inflammation. He was placed on the disabled list in order to make room for Nick Swisher, who has returned from a knee issue. Giambi is hitting just .128 in 47 at-bats.

"I just had to be 100 percent. It was good," Giambi said. "I just needed to take a step back so the ballclub could move forward, basically. It was the right decision for the ballclub."

Giambi is already feeling better just five days after being placed on the DL with a strained right calf. He could be back in the minimum amount of time needed.
