Rockies' LaTroy Hawkins hoping rest will heal biceps tendinitis injury

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4/23/2015) Rockies starting pitcher LaTroy Hawkins agrees with the decision to be placed on the 15-day disabled list due to biceps tendinitis in his right arm. He said he needs some time off from throwing, per The Denver Post.

“It hurts right now like a bad tooth ache,” he said. “And it was taking me forever to get warm. It took me 45 pitches the other day to get warm. That’s way too long.”

Hawkins, who was replaced as closer by Adam Ottavino, said his biceps tendon started bothering him in mid-March and gradually got worse.

“Hopefully, rest will help it,” he said “I haven’t had this in a long time. The last time I had biceps tendinitis like this, most of these guys were in high school.”

Rockies recall Scott Oberg; RP LaTroy Hawkins sent to DL

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(4/22/2015) The Rockies recalled pitcher Scott Oberg after fellow pitcher LaTroy Hawkins was placed on the disabled list, the team announced.

Oberg was recently sent down to Triple-A after he surrendered three earned runs on three solo home runs in his 2 2/3 innings of action. Hawkins will be placed on the disabled list with a biceps injury.

Rockies' LaTroy Hawkins removed from closer role

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4/13/2015) Rockies manager Walt Weiss said Monday that pitcher LaTroy Hawkins will get "a break" from closing duties, the Denver Post reports.

"We have decided to give 'Hawk a break in that role," manager Walt Weiss said before Monday's game. "We're just trying to give him a little bit of a breather for the time being."

Rafael Betancourt will be in line to get a save opportunity Monday if needed, but the team could also use Adam Ottavino, John Axford or Boone Logan in the role. Ottavino, who the manager cited specifically as one player who would be used in the role, is likely unavailable Monday after pitching Saturday and Sunday but has racked up seven strikeouts in 4 1/3 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and one walk.

Axford was signed this offseason as potential insurance in the ninth inning, but he's away from the team due to a family medical emergency. Logan has tossed three perfect innings in three appearaces.

Rockies' LaTroy Hawkins gives up game-winner to Cubs

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(4/12/2015) Rockies reliever LaTroy Hawkins gave up a decisive home run in the top of the ninth inning in Sunday's 6-5 loss to the Cubs.

Having already given up a run, Hawkins had Dexter Fowler down two strikes with two outs. Fowler then took a pitch over the right field fence for a two-run homer that put the Cubs in front.

"It was a cement mixer," Hawkins said, via MLB.com. "That's what we call them when they don't do what they're supposed to do."

Hawkins entered the ninth with Boone Logan recording the inning's first out. Hawkins recorded the other two outs via strikeout.

"All I had to do was get two outs," Hawkins lamented. "Cardinal sin -- I walked the leadoff hitter. That's something I've lived by my whole career, not walking the leadoff hitter, not walking guys. And like they say, he came back to score."

Hawkins was credited with a loss and is now 1-1. His ERA through the first week of the season is 16.88.

Rockies' LaTroy Hawkins blows save, earns win Wednesday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4/9/2015) Rockies closer LaTroy Hawkins surrendered two earned runs on four hits in one inning to blow a save opportunity Wednesday but was rewarded with a win when his team's scored a run in the 10th inning to give Colorado a 5-4 victory in Milwaukee.

Hawkins tossed a scoreless inning in a nonsave situation in his season debut Tuesday, and the team decided to try and use him in back-to-back outings when a save opportunity presented itself Wednesday. The decision didn't pan out, and the team could look to limit his use on consecutive days this season to keep him fresh.

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(4/7/2015) Rockies closer LaTroy Hawkins earned his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning in the 5-2 win over the Brewes on Tuesday.

Rockies not concerned about LaTroy Hawkins' rough spring

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(4/4/2015) Rockies veteran relief pitcher LaTroy Hawkins struggled this spring, posting a 12.79 ERA with four strikeouts in seven appearances. However, manager Walt Weiss remains confident in Hawkins being able to get the job done, reports MLB.com.

"He looks the same to me as far as arm speed," Weiss said. "He's had some balls in the middle of the plate, but his control as far as throwing strikes and his stuff look the same to me. He's still pitching because he's got great arm speed and his ball gets on the hitter quicker than they think."

Rockies P LaTroy Hawkins rocked for 5 hits in one-third inning

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(3/30/2015) Rockies closer LaTroy Hawkins had a rough outing in Monday's 11-2 loss to the Athletics.

Hawkins gave up five hits in only one-third inning, which included a three-run home run from Athletics third baseman Brett Lawrie.

“Hawk just left some balls high and up over the plate,” Rockies manager Walt Weiss said, via The Denver Post.

Rockies ready to rest LaTroy Hawkins when needed

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(2/24/2015) The Rockies will head into the 2015 season with LaTroy Hawkins as the team's primary closer, but manager Walt Weiss is ready to use other options in order not to overwork the veteran, MLB.com reports.

"Are we going to need other guys to finish games at times? Yes, we will," Weiss said Tuesday. "But he's the guy."

The Rockies have multiple pitchers with closing experience in camp in the form of lefty Rex Brothers and right-handed nonroster invitees John Axford and Rafael Betancourt. Righty Adam Ottavino is also an option for Weiss.

"It helps to have guys in the bullpen that have closed games before because there's a different mindset, but I feel like we have options and it doesn't have to be a veteran guy," Weiss said. "We have enough guys with stuff and presence."

Hawkins gave up no earned runs in eight innings last year while pitching on zero days of rest. He surrendered 12 earned runs in 13 1/3 innings while receiving just one day of rest. On multiple days of rest, Hawkins gave up eight earned runs in 33 innings of work.

Rockies pitcher LaTroy Hawkins ready for final spring training

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(2/21/2015) Veteran Rockies pitcher LaTroy Hawkins has already said this is going to be his final season in the league. He is thinking about it every day of camp.

"I have to think about that," said Hawkins. "Do I forget about this year being the finish line, or think of it as a finale? I don't know. I don't know how it's going to affect me. I'll just continue to think about the year the way I've been thinking."

Hawkins converted 23 of his 26 save opportunities last season.

"But a lot of the cities I go to, it'll be the last time I go there as a player. I will try to keep that in mind."

Report: 5-6 teams showing interest in LaTroy Hawkins

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(7/29/2014) After reporting Monday the Pirates were showing interest in Rockies closer LaTroy Hawkins, MLB.com reported Tuesday that sources acknowledged 5-6 teams are interested in trading for the 41-year-old reliever.

However, there are two issues complicating a trade for Hawkins. The Rockies are interested in keeping the veteran around because he's been a positive influence on the team's younger players. Also, the Rockies haven't been floored by a deal for a player that is under team control next season.

Report: Pirates interested in LaTroy Hawkins
