Rockies manager continues to back LaTroy Hawkins

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5/22/2014) Rockies closer LaTroy Hawkins is off to a bit of a rocky start in May. He has a 9.00 ERA through six appearances and has allowed at least one run in his last three outings through Sunday.

Still, manager Walt Weiss is standing by the veteran reliever and has no plans to remove him from the closer's role.

"I look at the body of work for the whole season," Weiss said Wednesday, per The Denver Post. "He's had a couple of tough ones the last couple of times out, but I think his stuff is still intact. I think some of his pitches have been elevated, and that's got him in trouble. But his velocity is the same. The action is the same. Location is what it usually comes down to."

Hawkins is far from worried after a few poor performances.

"I always go through stretches like this," Hawkins said. "So when I do, it's like, 'I've been here before. It's not a big deal.' For the fans, it's a big deal. But it takes one time going out and getting 1-2-3 and getting in a groove. Before you know it, it's 12, 13, 14 appearances later."
