(7/18/2013) Pitcher Derek Lowe has announced his retirement from baseball, according to USA Today.

Lowe didn't want to use the term "retire," but said he's "no longer going to play the game." Lowe admitted he still enjoyed playing but wasn't happy with his role. Lowe last appeared as a reliever with the Rangers but was released in May.

In 2,671 1/3 career innings, Lowe has a 4.03 ERA.

Derek Lowe, Jeff Baker expected to make Rangers' 25-man roster

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/23/2013) Pitcher Derek Lowe and infielder/outfielder Jeff Baker are expected to survive the final round of cuts and make the Rangers' roster, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Rangers manager Ron Washington indicated that he's comfortable using Baker at first, second and third and in left and right field. The versatile defender is hitting .423/.464/.558 in 56 plate appearances this spring.

Lowe could be a long reliever and occasional spot starter but has an outside shot of making the rotation. "We’ll see what happens in the next few days," Lowe told the Morning News. "I wanted a chance to compete, and that’s what they’ve given me."

Derek Lowe surrenders six runs in poor start

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/21/2013) Rangers pitcher Derek Lowe surrendered six earned runs on seven hits and a walk in 3 2/3 innings against the Angels Thursday.

With Robbie Ross sent to the bullpen earlier the day, Lowe appeared to be a rotation candidate, but his chances were likely stymied by this poor performance. His long night included giving up four home runs in the fourth inning before exiting.

Derek Lowe looks good in spot start

by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(3/18/2013) Rangers pitcher Derek Lowe, who is trying to make the team as a reliever this spring but is not on the 40-man roster, had a nice performance as a starter Monday night against the Royals. Starting because Yu Darvish was scratched, Lowe made his second Cactus League appearance.

Lowe, who is not competing for a spot in the rotation but could be used as a spot starter down the line, gave up just three hits and a walk over three shutout frames. He struck out three and has now gone five shutout innings this spring.

Lowe made 21 starts last season with Cleveland but went 8-10 with a 5.52 ERA. He was much more effective down the stretch for the Yankees as a reliever. He made 17 relief appearances and pitched to a 3.04 ERA for New York.

"The first inning was a little rough," Lowe said. "The second inning was a lot better. I had a lot more control over where the ball was going."

Lowe sports fighting spirit

by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com
(3/8/2013) New Rangers pitcher Derek Lowe completed a bullpen session without any restrictions Friday and said he should be able to advance to game action quickly, ESPN.com reports. Lowe, who signed a minor-league deal with Texas on Thursday, is hoping to make his Cactus League debut by the end of next week as he competes for a spot in the bullpen. "I know where I stand, you don’t have a full spring training to ease into it," Lowe said. "But I figured that would be the case. I’m looking forward to it. I’ve got to win a job. This is the first time in 16 years that’s the case. It’s healthy. It’s good to rekindle the flame and earn it."
