J. Tavarez struggling with control
(7/10/2009) MLB.com reports that Julian Tavarez was given the day off on Thursday after throwing 43 pitches in two innings on Wednesday when he took his seventh loss. Manager Manny Acta is concerned that Tavarez has been walking too many people, walking 26 in 34 1/3 innings this season. "He has been very inconsistent for the last few outings," Acta said. "He is walking way too many guys. He is pitching behind in the count. He can't afford to do that. I don't think he is tired. He is pitching like everybody else. He is in tremendous shape and works very hard."
Tavarez hung with seventh loss
(7/8/2009)Julian Tavarez (3-7) issued consecutive one-out walks to Carlos Gonzalez and pinch-hitter Seth Smith in the eighth Tuesday. Joe Beimel relieved and induced a comebacker from pinch-hitter Ryan Spilborghs but he missed shortstop Cristian Guzman going for the force at second, throwing past the bag to second baseman Willie Harris, who was on the edge of the infield. "I messed up and threw it to the wrong guy," Beimel said. "I did everything right up until that point. I got the ball I wanted, anticipated the grounder, got it -- and just blew it. There's no other way to describe it." Barmes followed with the tie-breaking sacrifice fly. "I was thankful in that situation to get a pitch I could put in the outfield," Barmes said. "That's really all I was trying to do. It worked out."
MacDougal leading Nats back end
(6/24/2009) From The Sports Xchange: The Nationals have mostly solved the problem of the back end of their bullpen. They have not, however, fixed the rest of that beleaguered group. Since remaking its relief corps with several veteran arms, Washington has gotten solid pitching out of Mike MacDougal, Joe Beimel, Julian Tavarez and Ron Villone. But the three other members of the unit -- Joel Hanrahan, Kip Wells and Jesus Colome -- are struggling, and all own ERAs over 6.00. "Somebody has to step up out of those three guys, because I can't pitch the same four guys out of the 'pen every single day whether I'm trailing or I'm ahead," manager Manny Acta said. "They have to step up. Somebody out of those three has to step up and pick up some of those innings."
Committee not working for Nats
(5/13/2009) From the The Sports Xchange: Washington's closer-by-committee approach continues to fail when called upon. It doesn't matter whether manager Manny Acta hands the ball to Joe Beimel, Joel Hanrahan, Julian Tavarez or Kip Wells. The result has too often been defeat. "We have tried everybody and their cousins, and we still can't get anybody to put a zero up in the eighth and the ninth innings," Acta said. "And that's really just killing us." Nationals relievers have blown an astounding 10 of 15 save opportunities this season, negating a lineup that is producing at levels not seen since the franchise arrived in Washington and spoiling some decent efforts from a young rotation. "It's very discouraging to waste the type of offense that we're displaying out there for a month and a half now," said Acta, whose team has lost three consecutive games despite scoring seven or more runs each time. "We still don't have much to show for it."

Tavarez solid in long relief
(4/8/2009) From the The Sports Xchange: RHP Julian Tavarez pitched in a mop-up role for the second consecutive game Tuesday and was impressive in this one, striking out four in three perfect innings. "That's what we got him for," manager Manny Acta said. "Whenever we go through times like this, he's a guy with a very resilient arm that we can throw out there."
Three Nationals sign contracts
(4/4/2009) Earning roster spots with the Nationals to open the 2009 season on Saturday are right-hander Julian Tavarez, left-hander Wil Ledezma and catcher Josh Bard, whose contracts were selected Saturday. The moves mean Washington will have lefties Ledezma, Mike Hinckley and Joe Beimel in the bullpen after times in recent seasons with no pitchers who throw from that side. "It's good to have three left-handers, especially in our division," assistant general manager Mike Rizzo said before Saturday night's exhibition finale against the Baltimore Orioles at Nationals Park. The Nats will also open the season with three catchers, using Bard as the third option. The three catchers are starter Jesus Flores, along with backups Wil Nieves and Bard.

"It was one of those at-bats where you hit it and said, 'Oh gosh,"' said Huff, playing in his second game after missing time recovering from a sports hernia. "I never pull the ball in the spring. Usually, the first time is three weeks into it. Hopefully this is a good sign."

"My shoulder is still going to stay healthy because I'm going to stay on my program and do what it takes, no matter what kind of pitching I do. I'm going to keep my arm healthy. So, (my role) is kind of irrelevant." Julian Tavarez will reportedly be the first in line to be the No. 5 starter.

I don't even think he knows how many base runners he gave up. He's going to be fine," Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said. "Brendan Donnelly is working on things. He's throwing the ball well. Julian Tavarez, who pitched very well when injuries forced him into a starter's role late in the season, will be slotted as a setup man. "He really opened some eyes with his performance as a starter late in the year," Epstein said. "More than likely, we'll acquire a starting pitcher and Julian will be back in the setup role in the bullpen, (but) that newfound versatility is something that's very valuable."

Gathright, still on the ground, then used his left forearm to push Tavarez's left knee. Before Gathright got up, Tavarez struck a blow in the area of Gathright's left jaw, and players flocked in from the benches and bullpens. No other players appeared to throw punches, and order was restored after a few minutes.

Tavarez won't return as closer
(9/15/2003) Pirates general manager Dave Littlefield told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Julian Tavarez has provided "adequate support as a closer," but that the team would likely look outside the organization for a closer for next season. My strong sense is that [the 2004 closer] is definitely going to come from outside," Littlefield said. "Nobody [internally] has been able to handle it to our liking. It will be challenging, but it's definitely a gap we have."

(9/16/2002) Tavarez, originally scheduled to pitch Sunday, was given an extra two days to rest a sore rib cage. He's now scheduled to start Tuesday against Montreal. Tavarez is a risky Fantasy pitcher.
(6/21/2002) Marlins manager Jeff Torborg recently let The Miami Herald about how inpressed he was with Tavarez's increased velocity. Fantasy owners should be impressed as well. He struggled in April going 1-1 with a 9.82 ERA and his fastball was being clocked in the 80-mph range. However, he has recently been clocked at 95 mph and has been sharp this month going 3-0 with a 2.00 ERA. Monitor his performances in upcoming weeks and pick him up if he continues to flourish.
(6/10/2002) With a win in Minnesota on Sunday, Tavarez is now 3-0 with a 4.12 ERA in his past four starts. He has lowered his ERA from 11.80 to 7.52 during that span, and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that he has increased his pitch speed by 15 mph since returning from the disabled list. Tavarez is still an inconsistent starter, but he's worth gambling on in NL-only leagues as long as he remains hot.
(5/20/2002) The South Florida Sun-Sentinel says Jeff Torborg's plan to skip Tavarez's next start have been scrapped because Brad Penny will go on the DL. Tavarez will now start on Thursday, instead of Saturday as originally planned. Torborg wanted to have Tavarez available out of the bullpen early in the week. Now Hansel Izquierdo or Kevin Olsen will start on Saturday. Tavarez is a risky start in Fantasy leagues. He is erratic and unreliable.
(5/18/2002) Marlins manager Jeff Torborg said Friday that he might skip Tavarezs turn in the rotation during the upcoming week, according to the Miami Herald. The way Tavarez has been pitching, you shouldnt be keeping him in your active lineup anyway.
(5/12/2002) Tavarez, activated before Saturday's game, allowed five hits and three runs, two earned, in four innings of a loss to the Dodgers. He had been on the disabled list since April 17 with a strained right shoulder. "The good thing is I went in without pain, and I came out without pain," he said. Tavarez is only worth using if your pitching is very thin in an NL-only league.
(5/10/2002)The Miami Herald says Tavarez, on the DL with a shoulder injury, will return to the rotation on Saturday. He will be monitored carefully and Tavarez might not pitch more than four or five innings.
(5/8/2002)The Miami Herald says Tavarez, who is on the DL with a shoulder injury, will throw a simulated game on Wednesday and might start on Saturday. If he cannot start, Michael Tejera or Gary Knotts might get the call.
(4/29/2002) The South Florida Sun-Sentinel says Tavarez threw from a mound on Sunday. He is expected to miss another week of action.
(4/22/2002) Tavarez threw long toss Sunday for the first time since being diagnosed with rotator tendinitis. The Miami Herald reports that Tavarez is expected to miss another two weeks.
(4/19/2002) The South Florida Sun-Sentinel says Tavarez will begin light throwing on Sunday and he might return to the rotation in early May. Kevin Olsen will be Florida's No. 4 starter while Tavarez is out.
(4/18/2002) The Marlins placed Tavarez on the 15-day disabled list with posterior rotator-cuff tendinitis. They called up RHP Hansel Izquierdo from Double-A Portland of the Eastern League. Look for Kevin Olsen to join the Florida rotation while Tavarez is out. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel says an MRI exam Wednesday revealed no fraying or tearing of the rotator cuff or labrum. Tavarez will rest for four days before he is re-examined.
(4/17/2002) Tavarez is expected to be put on the disabled list after reporting pain in his right triceps on Tuesday. He had filled in for Brad Penny (flu-like symptoms), but now Tavarez may be lost for longer than the 15 days he would spend on the DL, according to Jeff Torborg.
(3/28/2002) Jeff Torborg told the Miami Herald Tavarez will be Florida's fourth starter, replacing the departed Matt Clement. Tavarez is inconsistent and will be a risky Fantasy choice.
(3/27/2002) Tavarez was traded to Florida, where he may get a chance to work at the back end of the rotation. Tavarez is inconsistent, and should only be considered in NL-only leagues that allow reserves.
(3/14/2002) The Chicago Sun-Times says Tavarez will begin the season as the Cubs' fifth starter. ''Right now he's No. 5,'' manager Don Baylor said. ''You'd be lying to yourself otherwise. So far nobody has jumped in front of him.'' Donovan Osborne, who needs to build up arm strength, will begin the season in the bullpen. Tavarez is a streaky sort who is only worth a look in NL-only leagues.
(3/8/2002) Tavarez, who was hoping to win the No. 5 starter's job, is expected to now be a lefthanded setup man instead, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Jeff Fassero will be needed in some save situations in place of the injured Tom Gordon. Donovan Osborne and Jesus Sanchez should continue to vie for the final rotation spot, while Tavarez will have no Fantasy appeal working out of the bullpen.
(2/26/2002) The odds may be stacked against Tavarez winning the fifth spot in the rotation, says the Chicago Tribune. Manager Don Baylor would like to see a left-hander, such as Donovan Osborne, win the spot, and Tavarez is needed in a bullpen that could use another right-hander.
(1/31/2002) The Chicago Daily Herald says Tavarez or Jesus Sanchez will likely be the fifth starter when the season begins. Prospect Carlos Zambrano may eventually end up in the rotation, though.
(9/2/2001) Tavarez won his ninth game in his start Saturday, but Cubs Manager Don Baylor says the right-hander will still likely return to the bullpen once Kerry Wood is healthy. Tavarez might be worth keeping on your Fantasy roster until that point, but don't expect much production from him after that.
(5/3/2001) Tavarez was not suspended by the league but was fined an undisclosed amount by the Cubs on Wednesday for his alleged negative comments about Giants fans during last weekend's series in San Francisco. He is currently serving a five-game suspension stemming from a spring training incident, and will be eligible to return and is scheduled to start Saturday's game in Los Angeles.
(4/30/2001) Tavarez could be suspended for making allegedly negative comments about Giants fans over the weekend, according to the Chicago Tribune. He is just coming off a five-game suspension and if he's expected out for long, probably won't be worth holding onto in a Fantasy league. Keep Tavarez active for now though.
(4/19/2001) Tavarez's appeal of his five-game suspension was denied Wednesday, and he will begin serving it on Sunday. The Cubs were given the option of starting it Sunday or April 28, but elected to start it Sunday so that Tavarez will be able to pitch on April 28 in San Francisco. That's not much better a Fantasy matchup than Tavarez's originally scheduled start in Colorado next Tuesday, so you might still want to consider reserving him for the upcoming week.
(4/18/2001) Tavarez said Tuesday that he has been told he will begin serving his five-game suspension on Wednesday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. "I was hoping to get it down to four games, but they feel like it wasn't enough punishment," he said. Cubs pitching coach Oscar Acosta told Tavarez he will pitch next Wednesday in Colorado, meaning you should probably keep him on your bench for the upcoming week.
(4/17/2001) Tavarez will make his scheduled start Tuesday against Philadelphia despite Monday's postponement due to snow, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Cubs Manager Don Baylor opted not to bump him back a day because the team anticipates that Tavarez will begin serving his five-game suspension on Wednesday. Tavarez had his appeal heard Monday, and hopes to have the suspension lowered to four games or fewer so that he can remain on schedule to start April 24 in Colorado. You'll probably want to keep him reserved next week since he'll be pitching in Coors Field.
(4/11/2001) Tavarez will be visited by Major League Baseball officials next week to have his hearing about the five-game suspension he drew for a spring training incident, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. If the suspension is upheld, he would miss just one start, so you should probably consider reserving him for next week as a precaution.
(3/30/2001) Tavarez was suspended for five games due to a confrontation during last Monday's exhibition game against San Francisco. He will likely appeal and be able to play the first week of the season, but rest Tavarez just to be safe.
(11/16/2000) The Chicago Cubs signed Tavarez to a two-year contract today. The 27-year-old right-hander has primarily been a setup man in his career, but he was 11-5 with a 4.43 ERA and made 12 starts with Colorado last season. The Cubs may sign another starter or two, so Tavarez will end up in the rotation or the bullpen depending on their offseason fortunes.
(3/16/2000) Tavarez, who pitched a scoreless ninth for the Rockies, hasn't allowed a run in eight innings this spring.
(1:00 am ET) Julian Tavarez is expected to come off the DL this weekend. He will return to his role as set-up specialist.
(1/10/1999) Tavarez is an erratic sort who won't impress you as a middle reliever this year.
