(7/30/2009) The Rockies signed veteran reliever Mike Timlin to a minor league contract Wednesday.

Timlin works out for Rockies

(7/22/2009) The Denver Post reports that free agent RP Mike Timlin worked out for the Rockies on Monday.

Slew of veterans without jobs still

(3/23/2009) With the news Curt Schilling has decided on retirement, we have zero'd out the projections on some of the remaining free agents in our system. Jim Edmonds, Dave Roberts, Ray Durham, Mark Grudzielanek, Jay Payton, Paul Lo Duca, Gary Bennett, Aquilino Lopez, Rudy Seanez, Mike Timlin, Hector Carrasco, Rocky Cherry and Chuck James all don't project to play this season now.

Red Sox offer arbitration to two

(12/2/2008) The Red Sox offered salary arbitration to free-agent catcher Jason Varitek and pitcher Paul Byrd, a move that means the club would receive compensatory draft picks if those players sign with another team. Boston declined to offer arbitration to its other free agents: Curt Schilling, Bartolo Colon, Mike Timlin, David Ross, Sean Casey, Alex Cora and Mark Kotsay. Varitek is a Type A free agent, so if he signs with another team the Red Sox would receive two compensatory draft picks next year. Byrd is a Type B free agent. If he signs with another club, Boston would get a "sandwich" pick between the first and second round. Free agents have until Sunday to accept arbitration offers.

Timlin files for free agency

(11/5/2008) Red Sox reliever Mike Timlin filed for free agency Tuesday. "We felt there would probably be better opportunity for him elsewhere," GM Theo Epstein said. "Carrying someone in the 'pen in addition to our top five guys, we'd probably want somebody a little younger with a little more projection left. Maybe there are internal candidates to take over the role, but we're also out there looking."

Timlin not likely back with Boston

(11/5/2008) One player who almost certainly won't be with the Red Sox next season is reliever Mike Timlin. "We felt there would probably be better opportunity for him elsewhere," general manager Theo Epstein said. "Carrying someone in the 'pen in addition to our top five guys, we'd probably want somebody a little younger with a little more projection left. Maybe there are internal candidates to take over the role, but we're also out there looking."

Timlin sets career appearance record

(9/16/2008) Boston's Mike Timlin pitched the eighth inning against Tampa Bay, making his 1,051st relief appearance -- an all-time record for right-handed relievers. He had been tied with Kent Tekulve. "Quite humbling," Timlin said of the record. "It's something I'd been eyeballing all season, and its been out there slowly coming. I was not trying to be excited about it, but I probably will be when the season is over."

Timlin off DL for Yankees series

(7/3/2008) Red Sox reliever Mike Timlin returned from the disabled list Thursday, joining the Boston bullpen for the start of a four-game series against the New York Yankees. The 42-year-old righty went on the 15-day DL on June 21 because of tendinitis in his left knee. It was the fifth time in the last three years that he'd been out with an injury. The Red Sox optioned right-handed reliever Chris Smith to Triple-A Pawtucket after Wednesday night's loss at Tampa Bay. Going into the series opener, Timlin had pitched 82 times against the Yankees in his career, going 4-5 with 12 saves and a 4.07 ERA.

Timlin to come off DL on Thursday

(7/3/2008) Red Sox manager Terry Francona said RP Mike Timlin (left knee tendinitis) will be activated from the 15-day DL Thursday. RP Chris Smith will be optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Timlin continues fine rehab stint

(7/2/2008) The Sports Xchange reports that Red Sox RP Mike Timlin threw another scoreless inning of rehab work for Class AAA Pawtucket on Monday night and has been overpowering during his minor league stint. The 42-year-old setup man hasn't reported any problems with the left knee tendinitis that landed him on the 15-day disabled list.

Timlin unscored upon in Triple-A

(6/29/2008) Mike Timlin (knee) has tossed two scoreless innings on his rehab assignment in Triple-A.

Timlin's time on DL key for progress

(6/27/2008) The Sports Xchange reports that Boston Red Sox RHP Mike Timlin came through with a perfect inning of relief for Class AAA Pawtucket in his first appearance since landing on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in his left knee June 21. The time in the minors to straighten out some mechanical issues could be key for Timlin, who piled up the highest ERA in the American League (7.06) of any pitcher with at least 20 innings pitched this season. Timlin threw 10 pitches and registered seven strikes.

Timlin to start rehab Thursday

(6/26/2008) The Sports Xchange reports that Red Sox RP Mike Timlin is getting over his left knee tendinitis rather quickly, and manager Terry Francona indicated the 42-year-old reliever is scheduled to make an appearance at Class AAA Pawtucket on Thursday night.

Timlin lands on 15-day DL

(6/21/2008) Red Sox reliever Mike Timlin was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of tendinitis in his left knee. The move allowed Boston to activate right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka in time to start Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Timlin nears end of long career

(6/20/2008) According to the Sports Xchange, 42-year-old Mike Timlin may be nearing the end of his career with the Boston Red Sox and in baseball. Timlin is still pumping fastballs in the low 90s and generating the same velocity he's managed throughout a 1,035-game major league career, but the sinker hasn't always complied and the once-reliable slider has been erratic. "I enjoy playing this game and I love this game enough that I respect it for what it is and give it all I have," Timlin said. "I think the envy is going the other way. A lot of these guys look at me and ask, 'How old are you?' And, 'I can't believe you're still playing.' That's a compliment to me."

Timlin hung with relief loss

(5/28/2008) Mike Timlin (2-3), a former Mariner, is now 0-6 in 15 appearances at Safeco Field. He took the loss Tuesday.

Timlin saves second in doubleheader

(5/18/2008) Because Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon worked in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday against the Brewers, RP Mike Timlin pitched the ninth inning of the second game for his first save, at 42 years, 68 days, becoming the oldest to record a save since John Franco did it with the Mets at 42 years, 341 days on Aug. 24, 2003.

Timlin makes history Tuesday

(5/7/2008) Tim Wakefield and Mike Timlin had no idea they were making history Tuesday night. For the first time in baseball's modern era, the Boston Red Sox had two pitchers over 40 combine on a shutout. Wakefield gave up just two hits in eight innings and Timlin got the final three outs of a 5-0 victory over the Tigers. That was the only time that's happened since 1900, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. "It's pretty cool," Wakefield said Wednesday. "I didn't know it until they told me, but it's nice to know you're the first."

Timlin returns only to take loss

(4/12/2008) Red Sox RP Mike Timlin, on the disabled list with a lacerated finger, came off Friday against the Yankees. However, he pitched poorly in his one-third of an inning of work, allowing two runs on two hits to take the loss.

Timlin pitches in minors

(4/10/2008) Boston RHP Mike Timlin pitched one perfect inning against Lehigh Valley in his second rehab appearance for Triple-A Pawtucket on Wednesday night. He is recovering from a cut on his right ring finger.

Timlin makes rehab outing

(4/7/2008) Red Sox RP Mike Timlin, on the 15-day DL with a finger injury, pitched one scoreless inning Monday night in a rehab assignment for Triple-A Pawtucket. He struck out one and allowed two hits against Lehigh Valley.

Timlin might return next weekend

(4/6/2008) Boston will have to make a roster move once right-hander Mike Timlin (lacerated finger) is ready to return, possibly within the next few days. Timlin is scheduled to begin a minor league rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday.

Timlin to start rehab stint Monday

(4/3/2008) According to the Sports Xchange notes: RHP Mike Timlin is progressing steadily in his throwing program and is on track for a pair of rehab appearances with Triple-A Pawtucket (R.I.) on April 7 and April 9. The laceration on Timlin's right ring finger has completely healed up and the veteran could realistically be activated from the DL on April 11.

Timlin set up for two rehab outings

(4/1/2008) Red Sox RP Mike Timlin, recovering from a cut on his right ring finger that required two stitches, threw Monday from up to 90 feet and is scheduled to pitch twice for Triple-A Pawtucket on April 7 and 9 before rejoining the Red Sox around April 11. Timlin is on the 15-day DL, retroactive to March 20 and a day after he cut himself. "We'll see how the schedule plays out, hopefully on the 11th he'll join us," manager Terry Francona said. "Again, it's going to depend on how he feels. His arm strength was pretty good."
