Timlin still works out
(2/27/2007) MLB.com reports that Mike Timlin (lower back) was able to work out on Monday. "He had an oblique spasm (Sunday)," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "He showed up (Monday), was a little stiff this morning and really loosened up well. We kind of gave him the warning of, 'We don't want you on the mound until we know you're fine.' I don't think he thinks it was anything but a spasm, but we will certainly keep an eye on him and we'll make sure he throws a bullpen before he throws in a game, so we don't find out the hard way that we pushed him too much."
Timlin hurt, but will pitch Wed.
(2/26/2007) Reliever Mike Timlin, who turns 41 March 10, cut his batting practice throwing short when his left side tightened after about 15 pitches. He threw one more, then stopped. "I just thought it cramped up and figured it would go away in a second," he said. "It was still there, so I just shut it down." Pitching coach John Farrell said "he's responded favorably." Timlin is expected to relieve starter Curt Schilling in Wednesday night's exhibition opener against Minnesota. Others slated to pitch that game are Tavarez, Joel Pineiro, Brendan Donnelly, J.C. Romero, Bryan Corey and Runelvys Hernandez.
(2/7/2007) Instead of moving Jonathan Papelbon back to closer, manager Terry Francona repeated the closer will likely emerge from the group that includes Joel Pineiro, Brendan Donnelly, Mike Timlin and Julian Tavarez. Craig Hansen and Manny Delcarmen are also competing for jobs as relievers. "We feel initially the closer will emerge from four right-handers," pitching coach John Farrell said. "It is our goal to definitely name one closer, so other roles fall in line as we get closer to the start of the season."

The right-hander spent part of May and June on the DL with a strained right shoulder. "We need to do everything we can to protect his arm now that he's going to be 41 and try to learn from what happened this season and take preventative measures" against another injury, Epstein said.

"You just go out there and work counts, throw to different hitters and basically simulate how you would pitch in a game," said Timlin, who is 3-0 with a 1.40 ERA in 21 relief appearances over 19 1-3 innings this season. "It went well. I felt great. I threw 24 pitches but I've been feeling good for a week. "We're just making sure everything's feeling right before we go active," the right-hander said.

"That's a credit to him, the way his work ethic is, the way he goes about it. Everything. I don't care who you are, it's not easy to stay in this game as long as he has. Injuries, anything can happen."

In the next breath, he said, 'If anyone can pitch at a high level in that tournament and then pitch in the regular season, it would probably be you. But I still want you to be safe with what you do.'"

Timlin says no walking allowed
(8/20/2003) The Boston Globe says that Mike Timlin has allowed only five walks in 69 innings this season, which is an average of 0.65 bases on balls per nine innings. If he can maintain that pace, it would be the best walk-ratio in baseball since Dennis Eckersley walked four batters in 73 1/3 innings (0.49 per nine innings) in 1990. "That's difficult to do," Eckersley said. "My job was different in the ninth inning because you're really conscious of not walking people, but when you come in at any given time like he does, it's harder to do."

(7/29/2002) Timlin has been traded to Philadelphia. He will be used in middle relief and will have no Fantasy value.
(4/25/2002) Timlin, used mostly as a reliever, might get a turn in the starting rotation this weekend to replace Bud Smith. This spot start won't increase Timlin's value much right now, but it may lead to more starts in the future.
(4/19/2002) The St. Louis Post-Dispatch says Timlin will make his first start since 1991 on Friday. Josh Pearce might make his major league debut on Saturday. Timlin's long layoff as a starter makes him a big risk in Fantasy leagues, and there is no word on whether he will get any more chances after Friday.
(8/18/2001) The Cardinals optioned reliever T.J. Mathews to Triple-A Memphis before Friday's game after activating Timlin off the 15-day disabled list. Timlin will operate in a setup role, and shouldn't be counted on for saves.

(8/16/2001) According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Timlin is likely to be activated in the next few days. He threw a 30-pitch simulated game Wednesday and has made a rapid recovery from knee surgery. Timlin could get the occasional save chance over the remainder of the year, but we doubt the Cardinals will risk him getting injured by using him in too prominent a role. Still, Tony LaRussa has a tendency to be unpredictable with his relievers.
(8/15/2001) Timlin is close to returning from surgery on his left knee, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He threw on the side on Monday and is scheduled to throw a simulated game on Wednesday. If he suffers no setbacks, Timlin could be activated in less than a week.
(8/10/2001) Cardinals Manager Tony LaRussa says Timlin is making progress in his recovery from knee surgery, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. However, LaRussa doubts that Timlin will be back before the Sept. 1 roster expansion date. We don't expect Timlin to help your Fantasy team the rest of the season.
(7/28/2001) Timlin had surgery Friday to repair torn cartilage in his left knee. He will be out four to six weeks, and you might as well cut him in your league as a result.
(7/27/2001) Timlin had arthroscopic surgery Friday to repair torn knee cartilage and is expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks. He injured his left knee while stretching and squatting in the bullpen during the fifth inning of Thursday's game against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Timlin flew back to St. Louis and Dr. George Paltetta, the head of the Cardinals' medical staff, operated on a torn medial meniscus at Barnes West County Hospital. The reliever is 3-5 with a 3.44 ERA this season and has been used primarily as a setup man.
(7/30/2000) Timlin, acquired Saturday from Baltimore, pitched a hitless seventh in his Cardinals' debut with two strikeouts and a walk.
(4/14/2000) Timlin is expected to be ready to go on Monday after a torn abdominal muscle has kept him from starting the season. Since the bullpen was not able to close the door on Kansas City this week, the O¹s are desperately looking forward to his return.
(4/7/2000) Timlin will most likely go on the DL retroactive to opening day with a torn abdominal muscle. He¹s been feeling pain there for the last three weeks and a test today showed the tear. The Orioles will wait until getting a second opinion tomorrow to make any moves. For the time being Trombley will get the closer¹s role and the O¹s are considering promoting a long reliever from the minors.
(1/13/1999) Timlin emerged as a closer after the All-Star break last year, earning 18 of his 19 saves in the second half. He also saved 31 games for Toronto in 1996. It remains to be seen whether he can do the job for Baltimore over a full season. Timlin allows less than one hit per inning and is very careful about surrendering walks. He won't strike out as many batters as some other closers do, but he'll get more than one strikeout for every two innings pitched.
