(2/27/2013) The Washington Post reports free agent pitcher Javier Vazquez has pulled out of the World Baseball Classic and won't pitch in the majors this season because of knee surgery. The paper reports Vazquez is considering retirement.

(1/28/2013) ESPN reports free agent pitcher Javier Vazquez is having right knee surgery Wednesday to have his meniscus repaired. He is expected to be throwing at 100 percent in 2-3 weeks.

(1/10/2013) The Washington Post reported Thursday that Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo flew to Puerto Rico to watch Javier Vazquez pitch. The story noted that Vazquez, who hasn't pitched in the majors since 2011, was consistently throwing 94 m.p.h. on Wednesday. His team's general manager, Alex Cora, noted that Vazquez hit 95 on his 83rd pitch of the night.

Vazquez, Nationals have mutual interest

(1/6/2013) MLB.com reports that the Nationals have been scouting starting pitcher Javier Vazquez in the Puerto Rico Winter League, as they are looking for pitching depth. Vazquez, who sat out the 2012 season, is considering a comeback, and he wrote in a recent email to MLB.com, "If I do come back, Washington is definitely a place I would consider." Vazquez has also been scouted by the Red Sox, Rays and Royals, according to WEEI.com.
