Phillies cut 12 from spring training


(3/16/2009) The Phillies sent RHPs Andrew J. Carpenter, Drew Naylor, Blaine Neal and Scott Nestor, LHPs Antonio Bastardo and Sergio Escalona, Cs Tuffy Gosewisch and Paul Hoover, and INFs Mike Cervenak, J.J. Furmaniak, Jorge Velandia and Andy Tracy to their minor-league camp.

Phillies invite four more to spring


(1/16/2009) Infielders Anthony Hewitt, Pablo Ozuna and Jorge Velandia and left-hander Jacob Woods signed minor league contracts with the Phillies and were invited to major league spring training. Hewitt, 19, was the Phillies' first-round selection in last year's draft. In 33 games with the rookie-level Gulf Coast Phillies in 2008, Hewitt batted .197 with seven doubles, one home run and nine RBI.

(5/7/2008) One night after losing shortstops David Eckstein and John McDonald to injury, the Blue Jays purchased the contract of infielder Jorge Velandia from Triple-A Syracuse and sent struggling outfielder Adam Lind back to Triple-A. With both Eckstein (right hip) and McDonald (right ankle) feeling better Wednesday, the Blue Jays chose to wait another day before deciding whether either player would wind up on the disabled list, with McDonald the more likely candidate.

"I got a chance to play -- that was the one thing I was always looking for," Velandia, 33, said Sunday, after his old team -- the Rays -- beat the Pirates 7-5 at McKechnie Field. "I did really well.
