Initial 2009 rankings: Catchers

Eric Mack
Senior Fantasy Writer
  •

In preparation for our early mock draft, we will go position-by-position with some preliminary rankings for Draft Day 2009. We start with the catcher position.

Our rankings are based on position eligibility for next season, which requires 20 games at a position to be eligible. If a player has not played 20 games, his primary position will be defined as what position he has played the most games at -- unless it is a current AL player (that player -- ie a Dan Johnson -- will be listed at DH). So, this is why you won't see Giants 1B Pablo Sandoval, who has little chance to be catcher-eligible, since he should get 20 games at first base before the end of the season.

Early catcher rankings for 2009
RK Player TM The thinking is as follows ...
1 Brian McCann ATL This spot will be up for debate but McCann has the best pop at the position.
2 Russell Martin LAD A bad September is keeping us from ranking him tops at his position.
3 Geovany Soto CHC Breakout rookie might warrant No. 1 spot, but there's just more experience above him.
4 Joe Mauer MIN A very consistent guy, but we might grow old waiting for the true power to come.
5 Victor Martinez CLE Annual No. 1 was a monster disappointment and now has injury risk weighing him down.
6 Bengie Molina SF Very few backstops are their team's leading RBI man, but Molina is getting old.
7 Ryan Doumit PIT He has always been a great bat, but he has given the Pirates confidence defensively.
8 Chris Iannetta COL Among the many breakthroughs at this position and we expect more improvement.
9 Kelly Shoppach CLE He discovered his stroke and now the Indians have a decision to make this winter.
10 Jorge Posada NYY Shoulder hopefully will be corrected via surgery, but there is still a lot of risk here.
11 A.J. Pierzynski CHW Veteran is a steady option year-to-year, but age suggests you should let him fall to you.
12 Ramon Hernandez BAL He is a solid veteran, but will the Orioles slot him or their elite prospect next spring?
13 Yadier Molina STL A career year has finally come, but we still think he can wind up being the best Molina.
14 Chris Snyder ARI Yet another solid season of useful pop, but will he share at-bats in Arizona forever?
15 Jarrod Saltalamacchia TEX Not only did he have a bad year, but Rangers catching prospects are gaining on him.
16 Dioner Navarro TB He is a poor man's Mauer with a consistent bat but one that lacks real power.
17 Jesus Flores WAS The Mets made a real mistake letting him go via the Rule-5 draft. He is the Nats' future.
18 Kurt Suzuki OAK He has stamped himself as a solid starter for the A's but a borderline Fantasy one.
19 Ivan Rodriguez NYY His end of the season swoon with the Yankees should convince you he is low end.
20 Mike Napoli LAA The power is intriguing, but he is not a guy you should trust; he is far too streaky.
21 Jason Varitek BOS Boston's captain is an ornamental Fantasy pick now; he looks nice but doesn't produce.
22 Taylor Teagarden TEX He has been hot down the stretch, but the top prospect was underwhelming in minors.
23 Gerald Laird TEX We've waited for him to be dealt for years, but maybe he finally gets full-time job.
24 Jeff Clement SEA He might have the most offensive potential of anyone on this list, but it is merely "potential."
25 Matt Wieters BAL Elite catcher prospect is one of the few who could have a Soto-like breakthrough.
26 John Baker FLA We don't think he is as good as he has shown, but he might have earned starting look.
27 Rod Barajas TOR He had a nice comeback year, but he is the type of guy you can find off waivers annually.
28 Brandon Inge DET He regained catcher eligibility, but his numbers suggest he probably should be starting.
29 Chris Coste PHI He might be at the age of breakdown for a catcher, but this journeyman can really hit.
30 Miguel Olivo KC Every time you try to sweep Olivo under the rug, he surprises owners in deeper leagues.
31 John Buck KC It doesn't say a whole lot for you as a starter if you cannot make Olivo go away.
32 Miguel Montero ARI His power is much better than we saw this year, but he still is Snyder's caddy.
33 Jeff Mathis LAA If you find yourself salivating over catcher prospects, Mathis is your cautionary tale.
34 Jason Kendall MIL The veteran was a favorite of Ned Yost, but with Yost out of town might Kendall be, too?
35 J.R. Towles HOU For every Soto, we suppose their has to be a Towles; maybe he is next year's Iannetta.
36 Brian Schneider NYM Despite rave reviews about his defense, he really didn't live up to minimal hype this year.
37 Kenji Johjima SEA What a waste of money he will be for the next few years; no wonder the GM lost his job.
38 Carlos Ruiz PHI He was the Phillies' catcher of the future, but now he looks like a career backup.
39 Max Ramirez TEX His minor league OPS portends a masher, but can he catch and will he get at-bats?
40 Nick Hundley SD The punchless Padres might have found a backstop, but he won't help much in Fantasy.

Did we sell someone short? Overrate someone? You can e-mail Emack your Fantasy Baseball comments about our rankings to DMFantasyBaseball@cbs.com. Be sure to put Attn: Catcher rankings in the subject field. Please include your full name, hometown and state. Ryan Mattheus out 4-6 weeks with broken hand
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(12:15 pm ET) Nationals reliever Ryan Mattheus' broken hand will force him to miss 4-6 weeks, the Washington Times reports.

Mattheus slammed his right (pitching) hand into his locker after Sunday's game against San Diego. The fracture will not require surgery but because he won't be able to move his pitching hand, the work required to get his arm back in shape will force him to miss at least a month.

Danny Duffy scheduled for 60 pitches in Sunday's rehab start
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(11:47 am ET) Royals starter Danny Duffy will throw 60 pitches Sunday at Double-A Northwest Arkansas in his first rehab start since Tommy John surgery last season, the Kansas City Star reports.

Duffy's return comes a bit earlier than expected, as the one-year anniversary of his surgery approaches June 13. The club was hoping for Duffy to go on a rehab assignment around that date, so his progress should be seen as positive. He will likely use most of the 30 days allowed for pitcher rehab assignments before he returns to the major leagues.

Blue Jays move J.A. Happ to 60-day DL
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(11:27 am ET) The Blue Jays have shifted pitcher J.A. Happ to the 60-day disabled list to open the roster for Friday's starter, Sean Nolin, the club announced.

Happ suffered a nasty head injury in his last start May 7 against Tampa Bay, but his knee, tweaked as a result of the subsequent fall, continues to bother him. Happ won't be available until mid-July as a result of the move.

Blue Jays call up Sean Nolin for Friday's start
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(11:18 am ET) The Blue Jays have called up prospect starter Sean Nolin from Triple-A Buffalo, the club announced Friday. He will start Friday's series opener against Baltimore.

Nolin was scratched from Thursday's start at Buffalo in order to make Friday's game. The Blue Jays placed Darren Oliver on the 15-day disabled list and moved J.A. Happ to the 60-day disabled list to make room on the roster.

Nolin allowed just three runs (two earned) over 15 1/3 innings in his first three starts at Buffalo. He struck out 16 against just five walks.

Blue Jays place Darren Oliver on 15-day disabled list
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(11:02 am ET) The Blue Jays have placed lefty reliever Darren Oliver on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain, the club announced Friday.

Oliver, 42, accrued a 3.18 ERA and 1.8 K/BB over 17 innings in the Blue Jays' bullpen. Oliver's disabled list stint can be backdated to May 18, and he's eligible to return by June 2.

Jake Westbrook's snag appears minor
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(10:35 am ET) Cardinals starter Jake Westbrook hit a snag in rehab from an elbow injury earlier this week, but he does not appear to be seriously hurt, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Westbrook felt right elbow pain during a bullpen session Wednesday. The issue will keep him from coming back next week as originally planned, but it appears the issue will only push him back about a week at this point. Westbrook compiled a 1.62 ERA in 39 innings prior to the injury.

Indians considering recalling Carlos Carrasco
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(9:39 am ET) The Indians are considering recalling pitcher Carlos Carrasco, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Carrasco has been dominant at Triple-A Columbus, as he owns a 1.36 ERA and 4.6 K/BB over seven starts (39 2/3 innings). The only hitch for the Indians is the eight-game suspension he was tagged with in April for hitting Kevin Youkilis with a pitch in his only major-league start of the year.

Carrasco has appealed the suspension. He may be able to come up for a start while MLB rules on the appeal -- likely July 10 against Toronto -- and then serve his appeal around the All-Star break, giving the Indians a chance to rearrange their rotation in such a way that Carrasco isn't just dead weight on the 25-man roster.

However they decide to solve it, the Indians have been impressed with Carrasco's performance in the minor leagues, and they expect to find some way to bring him up this season.

Miguel Cabrera homers in fourth straight game
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(12:26 am ET) Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera continued his torrid pace Thursday, homering for the fourth straight game. He has six home runs and 13 RBI over his last four games while going 9 for 15 with five walks.

Cabrera's .391 batting average and .701 slugging percentage lead all major-league players, and his .467 on-base percentage ranks second to Joey Votto. He's been hitless just twice in his last 34 games. He's the early favorite for 2013 AL MVP.

Josh Willingham connects for two homers in loss
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(12:19 am ET) Twins left fielder Josh Willingham hit two home runs against the Tigers Thursday, but it wasn't enough as Minnesota lost 7-6. Willingham went 2 for 5 with four RBI, his first with four-RBI game this season.

Willingham has hit .212/.368/.453 with eight home runs and 23 RBI in 171 plate appearances. His multi-homer performance was his first since July 24.

Salvador Perez has three hits in return
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(12:15 am ET) Returning from a bruised hip, Royals catcher Salvador Perez went 3 for 4 with an RBI before being removed for a pinch runner in the ninth inning of a 5-4 loss to the Angels Thursday. It was Perez's eighth multi-hit game in May, raising his season line to .320/.336/.422 with a home run in 152 plate appearances.
