Highlighting top Braves prospects for '09

Eric Mack
Senior Fantasy Writer
  •

We are breaking down the top five prospects for each organization for 2009, taking into consideration: games, at-bats, innings and major-league service time. We expect these players to have rookie status remaining heading into next year.

According to MLB rules: "A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the major leagues; or (b) accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a major league club or clubs during the period of 25-player limit (excluding time in the military service and time on the disabled list)."

Note: Statistics are those at each stop in the minors this season and age represents how old they will be on opening day 2009.

Atlanta Braves

This organization is perennially one of baseball's best and it will continue to prove so in 2009. The Braves relied on too many young players last season to mixed results, but this year's crop of rookies should prove to be stronger if not deeper. They have a couple of Double-A starters who could step into the rotation out of spring training, if they don't fill it up with free agents or re-signings and they have some nice depth at key positions.

1. SP Tommy Hanson, 22

In a year, Hanson has surged through the Braves system and the prospects ranks in all of baseball. He now qualifies as one of the best arms in all of the minors. His breakthrough season in high Class A and Double-A was enough, but he was absolutely unhittable in the Arizona Fall League, which is notoriously hitter-friendly. The Braves have a slew of rotation spots open and Hanson looks capable of stepping in and filling one out of spring training. He has the chance to post a Jurrjens-like rookie season and might even have a higher ceiling at this point.

Totals 11 5 2.41 25 25 1 1 0 138 85 45 37 9 52 163 0.71 .175

2. OF Jason Heyward, 19

This teenager was one of the most clamored for names in the CBSSports.com database last spring. We didn't see a real rush to add him, since it would be a few years before he would be ready for the major leagues. The talent is pretty obvious for the 6-foot-4 man-child. He should open the season in high Class A, but he is so talented, he could impress in spring training and be in the majors by September at the age of 20. It is real hard to project a prospect so young, but 30-30 looks possible. The Baseball America comparisons call him the next Frank Thomas, but that is more due to his physical stature. He projects to be far more athletic.

Team AVG G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLUG OPS

Totals .316 127 471 91 149 29 6 11 56 223 51 78 15 3 .381 .473 .854

3. SP Todd Redmond, 23

The Braves pulled off a fleecing last spring when reliever Tyler Yates wasn't going to make the team and was out of options. They dealt the journeyman for Redmond and wound up getting a future major league starter. With the Braves current lack of a starting rotation, Redmond could get a look in spring training to be their No. 5 starter. Consider him a sleeper in NL-only leagues on Draft Day, but we wouldn't be surprised to see him make a Jorge Campillo-like impact.

Double-A 13 5 3.52 28 27 0 0 0 166 1/3 164 72 65 17 33 133 0.63 .257

4. C Tyler Flowers, 23

Flowers is a good receiver, according to Baseball America, so his run production cannot be ignored at the position he plays. Ordinarily, someone who hits like this is destined to play another position to keep his bat in the lineup more. Flowers has played first base, but that was due more to health than actual catching skills. Brian McCann isn't going anywhere, so we don't expect to see Flowers contribute this upcoming season, but he could be a bargaining chip in deals.

High A .288 122 413 72 119 32 1 17 88 204 98 102 8 7 .427 .494 .921

5. 3B Eric Campbell, 23

Campbell had a bounce-back year after a disappointing 2007. We have watched him for years saying he is the heir apparent to Chipper Jones. Clearly, he doesn't have that kind of ceiling now, but there is a chance he could be ready to contribute in 2009 if anything happens to Chipper again. At Chipper's age and with his history of injury, you have to expect something to.

2008 rookies to exhaust eligibility: SP Jair Jurrjens, SP Jorge Campillo, SP Charlie Morton, OF Brandon Jones, OF Josh Anderson, OF Gregor M. Blanco and RP Manny Acosta.

Last year's top five here: OF Jones, OF Schafer, SS Lillibridge, 3B Campbell and 1B Ka'ahiue.

Rangers officially recall Jurickson Profar
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(4:41 pm ET) The Rangers recalled infield prospect Jurickson Profar Sunday. Profar was already in Arlington but did not get the start in the game against the Tigers, FOXSports.com reports.

Profar was summoned from Triple-A Round Rock prior to the game Sunday as Ian Kinsler was being examined before being placed on the DL. The Rangers eventually shelved Kinsler and recalled Profar.

The 20-year-old top prospect has seen 17 at-bats with the Rangers, all coming last year. He hit .176 with a homer and two RBI.

Ian Kinsler lands on DL
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(4:37 pm ET) The Rangers announced that Ian Kinsler has been placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday due to an intercostal strain, FOXSports.com reports. The Rangers recalled Jurickson Profar as the corresponding roster move.

Kinsler was missing time and the Rangers thought it best to place him on the DL rather than let the injury linger. Kinsler last played May 17 against the Tigers and is batting .302 on the year with seven homers and 20 RBI.

Marcell Ozuna provides all the offense in win
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4:36 pm ET) Rookie outfielder Marcell Ozuna hit a tiebreaking, two-run double in the sixth inning for the Marlins, which turned out to be the game-winning hit in a 2-1 victory Sunday against the Diamondbacks. Ozuna has managed two multi-RBI game through 18 appearances, which account for five of his eight RBI.

Ozuna has hit safely in five straight games, but he's batting just .278 (5 for 18) with one triple and three RBI in that span.

Michael Bourn records two hits, two runs
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(4:35 pm ET) Indians outfielder Michael Bourn went 2 for 4 with two runs scored in Sunday's win over Seattle.

Bourn is settling in just fine as Cleveland's leadoff hitter despite his time on the disabled list. Bourn's line is up to .321/.369/.487 and he has seven hits and three runs scored in his last three games.

Michael Brantley knocks in four
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(4:32 pm ET) Indians outfielder Michael Brantley knocked in four runs as part of a 2 for 4 game in Sunday's win over Seattle.

Brantley finished with two runs scored and his second home run in the process. Brantley continues to be a force in Cleveland's revamped lineup, as his batting line is at a robust .301/.357/.392.

Didi Gregorius continues to make contact
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4:29 pm ET) Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius tied a season-high with three hits, including his seventh double, Sunday at Miami. Gregorius has hit safely in six of his last seven games, batting .346 (9 for 26) with one triple, two doubles, three RBI, four runs and four walks.

Losses beginning to mount for Wade Miley
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4:20 pm ET) Diamondbacks starting pitcher Wade Miley was effective over six innings Sunday against the Marlins, but he ended up as the tough-luck loser in a 2-1 loss. Miley was outdueled by Ricky Nolasco, who struck out 11 in eight-plus innings.

Miley (3-3) was locked in a scoreless battle until the Marlins scored twice in the sixth inning. The left-hander was charged with two runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out six. Miley has lost three of his last four starts.

Miley will pitch Saturday against the Padres. Miley lost to San Diego on May 3, allowing four runs on nine hits and three walks in five innings.

Justin Masterson dominates Mariners
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(4:14 pm ET) Indians starting pitcher Justin Masterson dominated the Mariners over seven shutout innings in a win Sunday.

Masterson set a season high with 11 strikeouts and allowed just three hits and two walks. Masterson has seven quality starts in 10 outings. His ERA dropped to 2.83 with a 2.93 FIP.

Mike Dunn has to bail out Marlins' closer
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4:14 pm ET) Marlins reliever Mike Dunn finished Sunday's 2-1 win after closer Steve Cishek struggled to get the job done in the ninth inning. Dunn came on after Cishek allowed a single and a walk with two outs.

Dunn walked the bases loaded before getting pinch hitter A.J. Pollock to ground out to shortstop to end the threat. It was Dunn's first 2013 save and second career save.

Steve Cishek pulled during save opportunity
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4:11 pm ET) Marlins closer Steve Cishek was pulled during a save opportunity Sunday against the Diamondbacks. The right-hander entered the game in the ninth inning with Miami up 2-0 and a runner on base.

Cishek retired the first two batters, but his inherited runner scored. Cishek then allowed a single and walk before being replaced by Mike Dunn, who earned his first save of the season.
