Ian Stewart
Sveum: No platoon for Stewart
Ian Stewart, 3B, CHC
12:40 AM
News: Cubs manager Dale Sveum told the Chicago Sun-Times on Wednesday that Ian Stewart enters the 2012 campaign as the everyday third baseman. Stewart, who was acquired from the Rockies in the offseason, batted just .156 with six RBI in 48 games a year ago. ‘‘Ian Stewart’s going to play,’’ he said. ‘‘These things are all left up to them and how they’re doing at the time. But there is no platoon situation in mind at all for anybody right now.’’
Analysis: There had been some that thought Stewart would end up platooning at third base -- due to his inadequacies against lefties -- but his manager cleared all doubt on Wednesday. While he is a career .223 hitter against left-handers, he showed from 2009-10 that he has some serious upside offensively and will be given every opportunity to succeed in Chicago. Keep an eye on his progress during the spring and plan on targeting Stewart in NL-only formats and some deeper mixed leagues as a sleeper.

Fausto Carmona
Carmona to join Indians soon?
Fausto Carmona, SP, CLE
2/22/2012
News: According to an Associated Press report, Indians starting pitcher Roberto Hernandez, formerly known as Fausto Carmona, is expecting to get a judicial pardon for his false identity charges. Hernandez was arrested in the Dominican Republic last month and he was placed on the restricted list by the Indians. Hernandez's agent, Jorge Brito, told reporters that "Roberto will be able to pitch in the major leagues this year," and that he may be able to rejoin the team soon, though no specific timeline was offered.
Analysis: With this latest news, it appears that Hernandez could have some Fantasy value after all this season. However, he is almost certain to miss at least some of the season, and in terms of preparation, he will have fallen behind the starters who did make it to camp this spring. Still, once Hernandez is able to join the Indians, it shouldn't be long before he is back in the rotation, and he would be worth targeting in AL-only leagues.

David Aardsma
Yankees give Aardsma a chance
David Aardsma, RP, SEA
2/22/2012
News: The Yankees signed free agent reliever David Aardsma to a major league deal worth $500,000 on Wednesday, according to the New York Daily News. The contract includes a team option for 2013, and general manager Brian Cashman said that the club is looking to him even more for next season than for the current year. Aardsma did not pitch in the majors last season, and he underwent Tommy John surgery last July. He started throwing again last month and could be ready to pitch in games by midseason.
Analysis: The hard-throwing Aardsma could pay off for the Yankees -- and for Fantasy owners -- later this season, but he comes with more than his fair share of risks. First he has to complete his recovery from surgery, and to have value as a middle reliever in Fantasy, he will likely need to regain the velocity and high-strikeout rates that he displayed back when he was the Mariners' closer. His strong flyball tendencies may also not play well with Yankee Stadium as his new home park. Despite all of the risks, Aardsma still has enough promise to be worth tracking in deeper AL-only leagues.

Edgar Renteria
Renteria likely to retire
Edgar Renteria, SS, CIN
2/22/2012
News: FOXSports.com reports that free agent shortstop Edgar Renteria is strongly considering retirement. Renteria's agent, Barry Meister, said that his client will not file retirement papers, but he does not plan on playing this season. Though he is leaving the door open to play again at some point, Renteria has already turned down minor league offers from two National League teams. He played for the Reds last season, hitting .251 over 96 games.
Analysis: Renteria's playing time and Fantasy value have dwindled over the last couple of seasons, and even if he has a change of heart and plays this year, he won't have much of an impact in any format. Especially given the likelihood of retirement, owners can ignore Renteria in all upcoming drafts and auctions.

Tim Lincecum
Lincecum throws, not worried about back
Tim Lincecum, SP, SF

News: MLB.com reports Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum played catch off flat ground on Wednesday, a day after missing a bullpen session due to back stiffness. Manager Bruce Bochy said Lincecum will throw off a bullpen mound Thursday, if he's up to it. "I said this yesterday: It's pretty normal [during] spring training to get some stiffness in the back," Bochy said.
Analysis: Lincecum does not appear worried about this minor injury and owners should take the same relaxed approach at this point. Minor injuries pop up all the time in the beginning of spring training so keep an eye on his progress going forward. Lincecum had his first losing season as a pro in 2011, but he still won 13 games, posted a 2.74 ERA and struck out a batter per inning. Even in his worst campaigns, Lincecum is still one of the best pitchers in the majors. Continue to view Lincecum as a top 10 Fantasy SP.

Jim Thome
Thome likely to platoon at 1B

News: CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports that the Phillies are likely to begin the season with a platoon at first base, and offseason acquisition Jim Thome will get the larger share of at-bats. The team anticipates that Ryan Howard (Achilles') will not be ready to assume the starting job until sometime in May, so until then, left-handed Thome and right-handed Ty Wigginton will probably hold down the position.
Analysis: Since Thome had not played first base since 2007, many assumed that Wigginton would get most of the starts there while Howard is out. However, if the Phillies go with a strict platoon, Thome will be something close to an everyday player. He has been preparing to play a larger defensive role this offseason, and apparently, there will be a payoff. Thome can still hit, so with regular playing time early in the season, he is worth targeting in NL-only leagues.

Clayton Kershaw

News: MLB.com reports Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw did not throw a bullpen session on Wednesday as he was dealing with some back stiffness. The team said that he was held out as a precautionary measure. "He's been around for a while, we know he's young and he's thrown a lot of innings and we won't do anything to jeopardize him," manager Don Mattingly said.
Analysis: Kershaw, who was named the opening-day starter Tuesday, is the reigning NL Cy Young winner so the Dodgers will not take any risks with the left-hander. He went 21-5 with a 2.28 ERA in 33 starts a year ago and owns a career 2.88 ERA. Keep an eye on his status in the coming days but it looks as though he should be fine going forward. Kershaw is an elite option in Fantasy and should be off the board in the first few rounds on Draft Day.

News: Royals catcher Manny Pina was examained by medical trainers after he "tweaked" his knee on Wednesday, coach Ned Yost told MLB.com.
Analysis: Pina is competing with Brayan Pena for the backup job this season so keep an eye on his progress going forward. But even if he breaks camp with the big club, Pina remains someone to avoid in all Fantasy formats on Draft Day.

Jason Isringhausen
Isringhausen gets minors deal from Halos

News: The Angels signed relief pitcher Jason Isringhausen to a minor-league contract on Wednesday. The right-hander posted a 4.05 ERA in 53 appearances for the Mets last season, including going 7 for 11 in save chances.
Analysis: Isringhausen had a successful return to the majors last season but was unable to land a guaranteed contract and will have to earn his way onto the 25-man roster in Anaheim. Even if he does, the 39-year-old will not see many save chances so plan on ignoring Isringhausen in the majority of Fantasy formats on Draft Day.

Brendan Ryan
Ryan begins throwing program
Brendan Ryan, SS, SEA

News: MLB.com reports that Mariners shortstop Brendan Ryan began his throwing program on Wednesday. He has been working his way back from a shoulder injury. "We're just trying to get his arm healthy," manager Eric Wedge said. "He came in a little behind, but he's moving around doing everything except throwing. But he's into his throwing program today. He'll throw again tomorrow and all the way through the weekend, and hopefully that will be the start for him getting back on track."
Analysis: Ryan heads into 2012 as the starting shortstop for the Mariners but it is more so for his defensive prowess. He batted .248 with three homers and 39 RBI in 123 games last season, and is a career .256 hitter. This injury is not expected to sideline him once the regular season rolls around but given his offensive inadequacies, leave Ryan for AL-only formats on Draft Day.
