2009 outlooks: Arizona Diamondbacks

Eric Mack
Senior Fantasy Writer
  •

The Diamondbacks went from one of the game's rising young teams to being a disappointment last year. They are still young and promising, sure, but how in the world did they let 2008 Fantasy breakthrough player of the year Carlos Quentin get away? Ouch.

Missing the playoffs was bad enough, but losing almost its entire farm system in deals for Dan Haren and then trade-deadline acquisition Adam Dunn hurts, too. This looks like a team built to win now, and yet still a year or two away.

The front-line aces Brandon Webb and Dan Haren are a great start to a contender. They supplement them with free-agent addition Jon Garland and lefty Doug Davis. Max Scherzer is the 96 mph beast on the come and will likely win the final spot in the rotation.

As for the lineup, they really could use a thumper -- one they could have had in Quentin or thought they were getting in free agent Dunn. Mark Reynolds has 40-homer potential, but it comes with a Dunn-like .230 average and close to 200 strikeouts.

Stephen Drew, Conor Jackson, Reynolds, Justin Upton and Chris B. Young are all just scratching the surface and should be their best yet this season, while Eric Byrnes is coming back from a torn hamstring that cost him almost all of last season. The bench figures to be led by Chad Tracy, who says he is healthy and ready to assume full-time duty, and Miguel Montero. Montero is one of the better young backup catchers in baseball because of his pop at the position, but starter Chris Snyder is a defensive whiz and a masterful game-caller.

The biggest position battle in camp figures to be at the closer spot, where Chad Qualls enters as the short-term favorite. Qualls was serviceable down the stretch last season in that role, while another midseason trade acquistion Jon Rauch struggled and was demoted back to mopup duty when things were all said and done. Tony A. Pena will push Qualls in spring training and figures to be a closer long term, so we might see him rise up with some real Fantasy value before the end of 2009.

Sleeper: Conor Jackson, 1B

We have outlined the late-round potential of Jackson in depth in our story on the top 27-year-olds for 2009. Jackson is just now entering his prime and we could see a nice bump in the power department. Because he has been labeled a Mark Grace among first baseman, a position deep on top sluggers, Jackson will go very late in your draft. But Grace didn't have Jackson's power at a similar age. Few could have seen Quentin developing into a Fantasy MVP so quickly a year ago, and it shouldn't be forgotten that Jackson was arguably the prospect-equal to Quentin when they were both coming up through the Arizona system. They brought Jackson up first, kept him and dealt off Quentin. We obviously label it as a mistake now, but Jackson is too young to give up on as a potential 30-homer man, too.

Bust: Jon Garland, SP

We thought about naming Scherzer as their bust, but we just couldn't bring ourselves to do it. That arm is just too intriguing, even if it has been sidetracked by shoulder soreness a bit too much for our liking. You really have to jump on Scherzer earlier than his probable returns, but the potential to really soar is just too great. Garland, meanwhile, peaked years ago. He posted a full-season's worst 10 victories in 2007, which led him to being dealt to Anaheim, where he posted a career-worst 4.91 ERA last year. The move to the NL likely lowers his ERA, but Garland to us is a pitcher who relies on run support. The young D-Backs lineup lacks that thumper as we said and figure to be streaky for the next few years.

Breakout: Justin Upton, OF

You can interchange Jackson and Upton as sleeper or breakouts. B.J.'s younger but stronger brother has a body of destruction, even if his .250 average, 15 homers, 42 RBI, 52 runs and one steal aren't impressive on Draft Day. He is so young, raw and without a track record of big-time numbers, he should be underrated in your league. It is one thing to know the hype, but it is another thing to buy into it before it consummates. He likely won't reach .280-30-100-100 in his first full season, but you shouldn't be surprised if he does. This guy is a future MVP candidate.

Bobby Parnell all of a sudden racking up saves
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5:50 pm ET) Mets closer Bobby Parnell retired the side in order in the ninth inning, striking out two, and secured his sixth save in a 4-3 win Sunday against the Cubs. Half of Parnell's saves have come in the last four days.

Parnell hasn't allowed a run in eight May outings, striking out eight batters in eight innings.

Travis Wood stays solid in no-decision
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5:49 pm ET) Cubs starter Travis Wood turned in a solid performance but did not factor into the decision Sunday afternoon against the Mets.

Wood, who made his ninth start of the season, pitched five scoreless innings before surrendering a run-scoring single to David Wright in the sixth and a two-run home run to Juan Lagares in the seventh. He was charged with three runs and five hits over seven innings of work. He struck out three, walked two and also helped his cause with a two-run home run in the fifth inning.

Wood has not allowed more than three runs in a start this season. He is scheduled to make his next start Saturday at Cincinnati. He gave up two runs and four hits over 6 1/3 innings of work in his previous meeting against the Reds on April 22.

Aroldis Chapman blows wild save against Philadelphia
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(5:48 pm ET) Reds closer Aroldis Chapman blew his second save of the season in Sunday's loss to Philadelphia.

It looked like Chapman had everything under control after he picked off Cliff Lee, who was pinch hitting for Delmon Young -- yes, you read that right -- but back-to-back homers from Erik Kratz and Freddy Galvis -- yes, your read that right -- tied the game and then gave Philadelphia the victory. Chapman has already given up three home runs this season, one less than all of last year. His ERA rose to 3.32 as a result.

Dillon Gee able to keep damage to a minimum
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5:46 pm ET) Mets starting pitcher Dillon Gee allowed less than four runs for just the third time in eight starts Sunday against the Cubs. Gee was in line to take the loss before New York rallied for a 4-3 win.

Gee was battled in a scoreless duel until opposing pitcher Travis Wood connected for a two-run homer off the right-hander in the fifth inning. Gee then allowed a solo home run to Ryan Sweeney in the sixth inning. He was charged with three runs on eight hits and one walk, while striking out six in five-plus innings. Gee's ERA actually declined from 6.13 to 6.04.

Gee, who is winless in his last three starts, will return to action Saturday against the Braves. Gee is 3-2 with a 3.13 ERA in eight career starts against Atlanta.

Adam Jones steals 2 bases
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(5:43 pm ET) Orioles outfielder Adam Jones went 2 for 4 at the plate with two singles on Sunday during a loss to the Rays. Jones also stole two bases in the game.

The center fielder drove in a run in the fourth inning with an RBI single to left to tie the game at one run apiece. He stole two bases and now has seven on the year. He's batting .322.

Jones has hit in four straight games and has gone 7 for 18 over that stretch with a homer and five RBI. He's up to six homers and 30 RBI on the year.

Ryan Madson nearing Triple-A rehab
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(5:41 pm ET) Angels reliever Ryan Madson, on the disabled list since the beginning of the year as he's working back from Tommy John surgery, is expected to pitch for Triple-A Salt Lake "early this week," according to Angels manager Mike Scioscia, MLB.com reports.

Madson is expected to rehab at Triple-A for several weeks once he makes his first appearance. His rehab to this point has included one inning for Class A Inland Empire.

Norichika Aoki remains red hot
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(5:38 pm ET) Brewers outfielder Norichika Aoki reached base four times in Sunday's loss to St. Louis.

Aoki finished 3 for 4 with a walk and a run scored, but was picked off once and caught stealing another time. Still, Aoki remains red hot -- he has raised his line from .247/.336/.381 on May 1 to .333/.407/.463 through Sunday's action.

Freddy Galvis connects for game-winning HR
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5:32 pm ET) Phillies infielder Freddy Galvis hit a walk-off home run off Reds closer Aroldis Chapman Sunday, sending Philadelphia to a 3-2 win. Galvis' home run followed Erik Kratz's solo blast that tied the game at 2.

Galvis, who has four home runs, finished 2 for 4 with one strikeout. He's batting .428 (9 for 21) with one home run, two doubles and three RBI in nine May games (four starts).

Sean Burnett likely back Tuesday
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(5:32 pm ET) Angels reliever Sean Burnett may rejoin the L.A. bullpen as soon as Tuesday, MLB.com reports Sunday. Burnett pitched an inning for Class A Inland Empire Saturday.

"Felt good," Burnett said of his one-inning appearance. "As long as I go out there today and feel good, hopefully I'll be ready to go Tuesday."

On the shelf since April 28 with left forearm irritation, Burnett recorded two strikeouts and allowed only one hit Saturday. Although Burnett wants to be activated Tuesday, that isn't set in stone.

"I don't think there's any pain or anything, but you have to work back into your delivery and make pitches," manager Mike Scioscia said. "His delivery is a little bit complicated. He's across his body so he's got some work to do there, but if he comes out of it well, feels good, can get a little work in, a little touch and feel, then there's definitely a possibility he can be activated Tuesday."

Edward Mujica records 13th save
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(5:31 pm ET) Cardinals reliever Edward Mujica recorded his 13th save Sunday against Milwaukee.

Mujica sent the Brewers down in order in the ninth to finish off the win. Mujica's excellent control continues to power him -- he has allowed just one walk in 19 innings, one of the main drivers behind his 1.42 ERA.
