By the Numbers: What's gotten into Lugo?

Al Melchior

In replacing Fernando Nieve in the Mets rotation last weekend, Jonathon Niese offers more change than just a letter in Nieves last name.

Though Nieve has a little more zip on his fastball, Niese has been stingier with walks and has done a much better job of keeping the ball down, at least at the minor league level. Niese's first start after his callup could be typical of whats to come: 12 of 20 balls put in play by Astros hitters were grounders, and only five were flyballs. While the Houston lineup doesn't strike out much, Niese's three Ks over seven innings is a ratio that his owners should probably get used to.

Only Jorge De La Rosa and Joel Pineiro have been more popular pickups among National League pitchers this week. Niese won't provide as much value as either De La Rosa or Pineiro, but at least he is still available in more than three out of four leagues on CBSSports.com. In terms of availability and performance, he is the rough equivalent of Jamie Moyer or Ross Ohlendorf. In other words, he is a good enough pitcher to round out your NL-only rotation, and he is just good enough that you will probably have a hard time finding an adequate substitute for him in the free agent pool.

More guys in demand

Josh Willingham, OF, Washington
Week 17 Ownership:
42 percent
Week 18 Ownership: 56 percent
Rank in NL Most Added: 4th
The Skinny: As Willingham has heated up in July, his popularity with Fantasy owners has grown steadily. His double grand slam game just put his surging ownership rate into overdrive. Even though he is finally owned in a majority of leagues on CBSSports.com, Willingham is still very underrated. Whether you judge him by his skill stats or by Fantasy Points, there isn't much difference between "The Hammer" and any number of outfielders, like Hunter Pence and Corey C. Hart, who enjoy the privilege of playing in a much higher proportion of leagues. It's unlikely that Willingham will continue to bang a homer every 15 at-bats, but it doesn't matter. He has already established a pattern of production that puts him on a par with several other mixed-league outfielders.

Year Team Walk Rate Whiff Rate Iso Power BABIP RC/27 SB

2009 Washington 13% 22% 0.293 0.329 9.5 3

Julio Lugo, SS, St. Louis
Week 17 Ownership:
3 percent
Week 18 Ownership: 10 percent
Rank in NL Most Added: 9th (tied)
The Skinny: A change of scenery and a hot week with his new club has put Julio Lugo on the Fantasy radar for the first time since April. During his short time in the Gateway City, Lugo has added 18 points to his line drive rate and, as a result, he's tacked 29 points onto his batting average. He may be at .313 right now, but the only time that Lugo has ever sniffed .300 by season's end was in 2005. That was one of only two times in his career that he had a whiff rate under 17 percent, and his current high average is not due to any extraordinary feats of contact hitting. Lugo is unlikely to sustain his scorching line drive rate, and it won't be long before he returns to being a marginal Fantasy producer.

Guys Dropping Like Flies

Cody Ross, OF, Florida
Week 17 Ownership:
67 percent
Week 18 Ownership: 61 percent
Rank in NL Most Dropped: 5th
The Skinny: Six weeks ago, Ross was the most popular free agent claim among NL players, and at that time, I commented on his inconsistency. To be precise, I wrote, "he'll give you weeks like his most recent one (11-for-27, 34 Fantasy Points), but probably also some repeats of Week 1 (2-for-22, 6 Fantasy Points)." I didn't account for Ross giving owners three consecutive weeks like his Week 1 stinker. It wouldn't be fair to say that owners have been hasty to dump Ross, but even in the midst of his extended slump, they still may want to heed this prediction from Week 11: "What you've seen of Ross to date in 2009 is what you're likely to get for the rest of the year." Despite the gigantic egg he has laid over the last three weeks, Ross' ratio stats are nearly identical now to what they were at the height of his popularity back in mid-June, and they'll probably be about the same come September. His owners in NL-only leagues should consider keeping him around, at least on reserves, and owners looking for some outfield help could find a real bargain in Ross.

Glossary
Runs Created per 27 Outs (RC/27) -- An estimate of how many runs a lineup would produce per 27 outs if a particular player occupied each spot in the order; ex. the RC/27 for Miguel Cabrera would predict the productivity of a lineup where Cabrera (or his statistical equal) batted in all nine spots; created by Bill James
Component ERA (ERC) -- An estimate of a what a pitcher's ERA would be if it were based solely on actual pitching performance; created by Bill James
GO/AO -- Ground out-fly out ratio
GB/FB -- Ground ball-fly ball ratio
Batting Average per Balls in Play (BABIP) -- The percentage of balls in play (at bats minus strikeouts and home runs) that are base hits; research by Voros McCracken and others has established that this rate is largely random and has a norm of approximately 30%
Isolated Power -- The difference between slugging percentage and batting average; created by Branch Rickey and Allan Roth
Walk Rate -- Walks / (at bats + walks)
Whiff Rate -- Strikeouts / at bats

Redmond: 'everybody' will close
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(11:42 pm ET) Marlins manager Mike Redmond said Monday that he plans to use "everybody" as closer going forward, the Palm Beach Post reports.

Redmond specifically mentioned Steve Cishek, Mike Dunn and Chad Qualls by name. Qualls was warming in the bullpen with a 2-1 lead Monday, but the Marlins extended that lead into a non-save situation.

Dunn notched his first save of the season Sunday when he recorded the last out after Cishek was pulled.

Aroldis Chapman earns ninth save
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(11:38 pm ET) Reds closer Aroldis Chapman was backed by his manager Dusty Baker before Monday's game against the Mets after he'd blown a save in two straight appearances. He converted one on this night.

Chapman earned his ninth save with two strikeouts in a perfect ninth inning. He needed just 11 pitches and his ERA is now at 3.15.

Johnny Cueto wins in return from DL
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(11:36 pm ET) Reds starter Johnny Cueto returned from the disabled list Monday in New York. He wasn't at his sharpest, but he earned the victory.

Cueto gave up a three-run homer to Marlon Byrd in the third inning, but that was all he allowed. He gave up the three runs on three hits and four walks over five frames and 90 pitches to move to 2-0 on the year.

He struck out eight and his ERA is at 3.22. Cueto was making his first start since suffering an oblique injury at Pittsburgh on April 13. His next scheduled start comes Sunday against the Cubs.

Shaun Marcum suffers another defeat
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(11:33 pm ET) It was another start and another defeat for Mets pitcher Shaun Marcum Monday at home against the Reds. Marcum did just enough to fall to 0-5 on the year.

Marcum gave up four earned runs -- three in the first -- and the Mets lost 4-3. He was victimized twice by Jay Bruce, who hit a run-scoring double in the first and a home run in the sixth inning. In all, Marcum allowed four runs on six hits and a walk over six frames. He struck out seven and his ERA is now at 6.59.

The 31-year-old has at least gone six or more innings in his last two outings. He's shown improvement and will search for that elusive first win Sunday against Atlanta.

Aramis Ramirez hitless in return
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(11:26 pm ET) Brewers third baseman Aramis Ramirez (knee) returned to action Monday against the Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw. Ramirez went 0 for 4 with a strikeout, as the Brewers managed just three hits.

Ramirez's average is down to .328 on the year. He'd gone 5 for 9 in his previous two games with two homers and six RBI.

Yovani Gallardo can't top Dodgers
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(11:23 pm ET) Brewers starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo fell one game under .500 at 3-4 Monday with a loss against the Dodgers. With Clayton Kershaw pitching a complete game, it would have been tough for Gallardo to earn the win.

The Milwaukee starter gave up three runs on eight hits and a walk over six decent innings in defeat, his ERA at 4.50. He struck out seven batters over his 105 pitches but allowed solo homers to Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp.

Gallardo has been fairly consistent of late for Milwaukee but that hasn't translated into a win since he moved to 3-1 on April 29 against Pittsburgh. Gallardo will look to get back on track when he next takes the hill Sunday against the Pirates.

Clayton Kershaw wins in complete game
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(11:19 pm ET) Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw looked every bit like an ace on Monday in Milwaukee.

Kershaw pitched a complete-game victory to improve to 5-2 on the year.

Kershaw gave up just an RBI ground out in the third inning for the only run he allowed. He gave up three hits and a walk over his nine innings, throwing 107 pitches. Kershaw struck out five batters and lowered his ERA to 1.35.

Kershaw, 25, has picked up consecutive wins with one run allowed over 17 2/3 innings with 16 Ks over that span. He hasn't lost since falling to 2-2 on April 17 against San Diego. Kershaw makes his next start Sunday against the Cardinals.

Cameron Maybin nearing rehab assignment
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(11:15 pm ET) Padres outfielder Cameron Maybin (wrist) is expected to get around 30 rehab at-bats, MLB.com reports Monday.

Maybin will hit in the cage and on the field over the next few days and will go on a rehab assignment in the minor leagues if all goes well. His assignment should begin Friday. Maybin could return for the Padres by the end of the month.

James Darnell may need another surgery
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(11:13 pm ET) Padres outfielder James Darnell could need another surgery on his injured left shoulder, MLB.com reports Monday. Darnell injured the shoulder with Triple-A Tucson May 14.

Darnell was in San Diego last week to confer with team doctors. He already has had two operations on the shoulder in 2011 and 2012. Darnell is likely to be sidelined for a long time.

Jake Westbrook to throw off mound
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(11:03 pm ET) Cardinals pitcher Jake Westbrook (elbow) plans on throwing off a mound Tuesday, MLB.com reports. The news comes after Westbrook made 25 throws off flat ground from 60 feet Sunday.

Westbrook will likely need a rehab outing or two before the Cardinals consider adding him to the rotation. He'll likely be back in early June.
