2011 Fantasy outlooks: Atlanta Braves

Scott White
  •

Listen to our latest Fantasy Baseball Podcast!

After sending longtime skipper Bobby Cox out with one last playoff appearance, their first since 2005, the Braves got right to work on 2011, turning to former Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez to usher in a new era.

But really, that era already began during their years without a playoff appearance. It began with players like Brian McCann and Jair Jurrjens and continued with Tommy Hanson and Jason Heyward over the last two years. And it's about to get a whole lot better.

Returning to their roots of standout starting pitching, the Braves have stockpiled a system with more arms than they can fit into a starting rotation. We got a first glimpse of it last year with Mike Minor and Brandon Beachy, who will compete for a rotation spot this spring, but the best is yet to come with the elite trio of Julio Teheran, Randall Delgado and Arodys Vizcaino, all of whom have the upside to push Hanson for opening day honors over the next decade or so.

Of course, they'll have to continue developing for now. The Braves still have veterans Tim Hudson and Derek Lowe anchoring the staff, not that they're any sort of letdown. Throw in a young bullpen that has strikeout artist Craig Kimbrel ready to step in for retired closer Billy Wagner (and an equally impressive Jonny Venters backing him up), and the Braves shouldn't have any needs on the mound this season.

But what about their lineup? Freddie Freeman joins Jason Heyward in the team's transition to the future, but the veteran presence remains. Chipper Jones may never be the same coming off knee surgery, but the Braves insured themselves with the addition of Dan Uggla, who gives All-Star second baseman Martin Prado the flexibility to play left field or third base and the lineup as a whole its first 30-homer threat since Mark Teixeira left in 2008.

Breakout ... Jason Heyward, OF

Heyward is almost too obvious here. He was practically a must-start in Fantasy last year even though he had a month when he hit only .181 and even though he finished with just 18 homers. The rookie barely scratched the surface of his potential, yet he still found a way to contribute, showing adaptability well beyond his 21 years of age. He ranked 10th among full-time players with a .393 on-base percentage, which means his progression is mostly a matter of him getting comfortable and developing physically. In other words, he could take off as a .300-hitting, 30-homer machine any day now. Even an offseason of rest for his troublesome thumb -- the reason for that one poor month -- could make a world of difference. Heyward comes with an abundance of hype for the second straight season, but he's worth drafting ahead of his numbers as a top-12 Fantasy outfielder given the likelihood he'll finish in the top five.

Bust ... Alex Gonzalez, SS

Granted, nobody thinks of Gonzalez as a savior at the shortstop position, but his performance last year might lead some people to believe he's more useful than he actually is. Truth is he was a one-trick pony, and that one trick -- his 23 homers -- equaled a career high. The 34-year-old isn't at an age when career highs come easily, and this one wouldn't have happened without an especially hot start with the heavy-hitting Blue Jays. After he went to the Braves, he hit a modest six homers in 267 at-bats. Gonzalez's free-swinging ways have always made him one of the worst on-base players in the game, leaving him with nothing to fall back on if he regresses to his usual 12-15 home runs. Shortstop is as weak as ever, meaning Gonzalez no doubt has his place in Fantasy, but he has the potential to go undrafted in mixed leagues.

Sleeper ... Nate McLouth, OF

Fantasy owners were quick to jump off the bandwagon with McLouth, whose fall from grace last year was just as abrupt as his rise to glory in 2008. Some say his demise made all the sense in the world, that he was an overachiever due for a letdown. But to fall that far that fast? He wasn't just fourth-outfielder bad; he was out-of-the-major-leagues bad, spending almost all of August in the minors. But he returned to hit .273 with three homers and three steals in September, looking like the power-speed threat of old. The Braves certainly liked what they saw, giving him the ultimate vote of confidence by entering spring training without a real fallback option in center field. Power and speed are two attributes that tend to stick around for players in their late 20s, making McLouth a bounce-back candidate no matter what the naysayers say. And the best part is he'll cost next to nothing on Draft Day.

1 Craig Kimbrel 22 RP Majors Majors
Won't make the biggest impact long-term, but expected role should make him instant success in Fantasy.
2 Freddie Freeman 21 1B Majors Majors
Projected starter perhaps not as ready as Heyward was last year, but long-term potential is similar.
3 Mike Minor 23 SP Majors Majors
Some doubts when taken seventh overall in 2009, but strikeout rate confirmed top-of-rotation stuff.
4 Julio Teheran 20 SP Double-A Double-A
Pedro Martinez type has most upside in system. Could force way into crowded rotation by midseason.

Crazy numbers put him on map last season. Not as much upside as Minor but could beat him for job.
Best of the rest: Randall Delgado, SP; Arodys Vizcaino, SP; Matt Lipka, SS; Brett Oberholtzer, SP; J.J. Hoover, SP; Carlos Perez, SP; Edward Salcedo, SS; Christian Bethancourt, C; Erik Cordier, SP; Juan Abreu, RP; Brandon Hicks, SS; Mycal Jones, SS; Adam Milligan, OF; and Tyler Patornicky, SS.

by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(3:33 pm ET) The Padres have released third baseman James Darnell, MLB.com reports. He was hitting .246/.281/.361 at Triple-A Tucson in 15 games.

Andrew Bailey to remain closer 'for the time being'
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:26 pm ET) During his weekly radio appearance on WEEI, Red Sox manager John Farrell said Wednesday reliever Andrew Bailey will remain the closer "for the time being." Bailey has been struggling lately, recording two blown saves and an 11.25 ERA in his last four appearances.

"Andrew Bailey is our closer, and yet we fully recognize that we have some work to do with him," Farrell said. "Right now, what has plagued him is that fastball has been up to his arm side, where left-handers have hurt him with the long ball. So getting him down in the strike zone consistently. And I think more than anything is just getting the breaking ball over in either the first pitch or fastball counts. But for the time being, he is definitely our closer."

Will Everth Cabrera be the same when he returns?
by Al Melchior | Data Analyst
(3:23 pm ET) Coming into this season, Fantasy owners knew that if the Padres gave Everth Cabrera a regular role, he could be a big-time steals producer. With 31 stolen bases less than halfway into the season, Cabrera has delivered as expected, but his .305 batting average has been a pleasant surprise.

Now Cabrera is on the disabled list with a hamstring strain, and understandably, owners are stashing him. We now have to live with the uncertainty over how long Cabrera will be out and how healthy he will be when he returns. What we can assess with more certainty is how well Cabrera is likely to perform should he be fully healed when he returns. He worked on his right-handed swing during the offseason, and this season Cabrera has hit .414 versus lefties, as opposed to .195 last season. Over his torrid last 28 games, Cabrera's overall batting average has surged as he has cut back dramatically on his strikeouts, though a .433 BABIP has inflated it somewhat.

It will remain to be seen whether Cabrera will be at 100 percent when he comes back and if he can sustain his recent improvements. Given how he spent his offseason and his minor-league track record of good contact skills, Cabrera is a strong bet to be a top 10 shortstop from the point of his return on forward.

Red Sox target June 25 for Clay Buchholz's return
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:22 pm ET) Red Sox manager John Farrell said Wednesday during his weekly radio spot on WEEI the team is targeting June 25 against the Rockies for Clay Buchholz's return to the rotation. Buchholz was placed on the disabled list Tuesday because of a strained AC joint in his shoulder.

"When we looked at the previous days missed, what we felt comfortable with in terms of the throwing needed to get back to have him be able to go five, six, hopefully seven innings on Saturday, we felt like it was a little too short in total numbers of days, and when you factor in rest period, throwing sessions," Farrell said. "So we can retroactive his DL status and make him available on the 24th, which is Monday. We’re off, so that game we open up home against Colorado, he’s eligible to start that. That gives us the ability to do a little bit of a [simulated] game Friday or Saturday over in Detroit. And probably gets him in a better place physically to walk out and start a big-league game."

Angel Pagan to begin rehab Thursday
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(3:19 pm ET) Giants outfielder Angel Pagan will begin a rehab assignment Thursday at high Class A San Jose, CSN San Francisco reports.

Pagan is scheduled for five innings in Thursday's game. It's unclear how long his rehab assignment will last, but Pagan should be able to return to the Giants within seven to 10 days assuming no setbacks.

Dustin Ackley needs more reps in outfield
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2:58 pm ET) Mariners manager Eric Wedge said Tuesday the reason the team hasn't recalled Dustin Ackley, who is batting .383 with a .519 slugging percentage in 19 games for Triple-A Tacoma, is because he wants him to get more reps in the outfield.

"I want him to have a little bit more time in the outfield in general," Wedge said, per The Seattle Times. "Whether it be left field or center field. Either way for me I think it works good. The reps in center field would just be a concern right now. I want to make sure he can do that."

Brewers recall Josh Prince
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(2:18 pm ET) The Brewers have recalled outfielder Josh Prince from Triple-A Nashville, the club announced Wednesday. Prince is hitting .243/.351/.416 at Nashville over 46 games. His stay is likely a short one -- Prince is taking Norichika Aoki's roster spot while he is on paternity leave.

Norichika Aoki goes on paternity list
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(2:15 pm ET) The Brewers have placed outfielder Norichika Aoki on the paternity list, the club announced Wednesday. Aoki has been essentially on call awaiting the birth of his second child since Sunday. He will miss at least three days.

Phillies promote Maikel Franco to Double-A
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(1:35 pm ET) The Phillies have promoted third base prospect Maikel Franco to Double-A Reading, Baseball America reports.

Franco, 20, dominated at high Class A Clearwater, where he hit .299/.349/.576 with 16 home runs in just 65 games. With the Phillies lacking an obvious long-term third baseman -- Michael Young is 36 years old and on an expiring contract -- Franco's stock will be worth watching closely as the Phillies look to fill the hot corner.

Jake Arrieta will work as starter in minors
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1:30 pm ET) Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Wednesday pitcher Jake Arrieta will work as a starter at Triple-A Norfolk. Arrieta was optioned to Norfolk after losing in a spot start Monday against the Tigers.

"We constantly look at things with guys with really good arms like Jake," Showalter said, per The Baltimore Sun. "If he gets the ball down, he’s effective. How do you do it? Is it delivery? Is it a mentality? We’ve talked about all those things and we will continue. Let him get there. I know he’s going to start his next outing and at some point we will probably step back and see where we are with it. I want to get him back on good ground."
