2011 Fantasy outlooks: Baltimore Orioles

Al Melchior
  •

Listen to our latest Fantasy Baseball Podcast!

Last year's 66-96 record gave the Orioles their 13th straight losing season, but out of a dismal campaign came a few signs of hope.

After the hiring of Buck Showalter as manager in midseason, Baltimore won 34 of their final 57 games. The change of leadership may have been a factor, but the O's were carried by strong late-season pitching. In particular, Jeremy Guthrie, Brian Matusz and Brad Bergesen turned in solid performances once Showalter came on board.

While Matusz and Bergesen picked up their pace, the other young starters -- Jake Arrieta and Chris Tillman -- did not fare as well. With some of their growing pains behind them, the Orioles should improve on their 4.59 team ERA, which was the second-worst in the American League. Free agent signee Justin Duchscherer will provide an additional veteran presence to Guthrie, not to mention a solid arm, if he can come back strong from hip surgery. Koji Uehara, who saved 13 of 15 games after seizing the closer's role in August, is back, and he will compete with Kevin Gregg for the ninth-inning honors this spring.

With no major hitting prospects on the horizon, the Orioles had to hit the trade market to upgrade an offense that scored the second-fewest runs in the AL last season. Mark Reynolds and J.J. Hardy will give Baltimore much more thump from the left side of the infield, though incumbents Josh Bell and Cesar Izturis are expected to remain with the team as reserves. The Orioles went the free agent route to replace Ty Wigginton at first base with Derrek Lee.

Even if Reynolds and Lee fail to bounce back from disappointing seasons, the Orioles' lineup could take some sizable strides this year. Hardy provides a major upgrade over Izturis, Brian Roberts is healthier after missing 103 games in 2010, and Adam Jones and Matt Wieters are still looking for their breakout seasons.

Things are never easy in the AL East, but for the first time in years, the Orioles have some hope for the future. For Fantasy owners of up-and-coming talents like Matusz, Bergesen and Jones, even the present holds some appeal.

Sleeper ... Brad Bergesen, SP

Bergesen had such a miserable first half last year, going 3-6 with a 6.40 ERA, that Fantasy owners might have forgotten that he was a legitimate mixed league option during his 2009 rookie season. During the second half of 2010, he was much more like the Bergesen we saw the year before, posting a 3.94 ERA and improving both his strikeout and walk rates. Even at his best, the 25-year-old doesn't get many strikeouts, but as long as he can induce ground balls and minimize walks, he'll have success. For the better part of his two-year major league career, he has done just that. You could do worse with a late-round pick in mixed leagues, though you could probably acquire him off waivers.

Breakout ... Brian Matusz, SP

Matusz's 2010 stat line -- headed by a 10-12 record and a 4.30 ERA -- doesn't look very impressive, but few pitchers were hotter over the season's final two months. Over his last 11 starts, Matusz went 7-1 with a 2.18 ERA, thanks to superb control and lower line drive and strand rates. These were the hallmarks of his minor league success, so there is reason to think he can carry his late-season accomplishments over to the 2011 campaign. Not only is Matusz a strong candidate to help his own cause by allowing fewer runs and baserunners, but he should get a healthier dose of run support this year as well. This will be the year that Matusz will become relevant in standard mixed league formats.

Bounceback player … Mark Reynolds, 3B

Despite banging out 32 home runs, Mark Reynolds' .198 batting average was such a drag on his Fantasy value a year ago that he was barely relevant in mixed leagues, especially in Rotisserie formats. The twin culprits were strikeout and flyball rates that were well beyond his normal eye-popping levels. Those rates have been on the rise ever since his rookie season, but they took such huge leaps in 2010 that some regression to the mean seems almost inevitable. Reynolds is still just 27, so it's far too early to write him off as being on the slippery slope of decline. While he won't hit for a high enough average to be an elite option, look for Reynolds to rise back into the top 10 of Fantasy third basemen.

1 Manny Machado 18 SS Class A Class A
The third overall pick in the 2010 draft got off to a good start at Short-Season Class A. He's a must-draft in long-term keeper leagues.
2 Zach Britton 23 SP Triple-A Triple-A
Sinkerballer had excellent results in Double-A and Triple-A in 2010. Looks ready for the majors at some point in 2011.
3 Ryan Adams 23 2B Double-A Triple-A
Can hit for average and has good power for a second baseman. He will probably start the year in Triple-A, but could fill in for Brian Roberts if need be.
4 Dan Klein 22 SP Class A Class A
The 2010 draftee only appeared in five games in the minors last year but could reach the majors as soon as this year.
5 Xavier Avery 21 OF Double-A Triple-A
Speedy outfielder showed some on-base skills at Class A, but was overmatched after his promotion to Double-A last year. Has the tools to be a solid major leaguer.
Best of the rest: Mycal Givens, SS; L.J. Hoes, 2B; Jonathan Schoop, SS; Ryan Berry, SP; Wynn Pelzer, SP; Joseph Mahoney, 1B; Tyler Townsend, 1B; Matt Hobgood, SP; Brandon Cooney, RP; Bobby Bundy, SP; Connor Naron, SS; Brandon Snyder, 1B; and Caleb Joseph, C.

Time to add Rex Brothers
by Nando Di Fino | Senior Fantasy Writer
(9:29 am ET) With Rafael Betancourt possibly headed to the DL with a groin injury, the Rockies will likely turn to Rex Brothers to close out games in Betancourt's absence.

Brothers, 25, is 1-0 with a 0.44 ERA and 1.13 WHIP this season, striking out 21 batters in 20 1/3 innings. He has one career save, but his high striekout rate (11.4 K/9 in 145 career appearances) and decent ratios should be enough to get him the job.

The Rockies have surprised Fantasy players already this season -- sending Tyler Colvin to the minors and releasing Chris Nelson, for example -- so it's not a sure thing that Matt Belisle or Wilton Lopez won't get the interim job, but Brothers has been stellar this season, pitches regularly in the eighth and ninth inning, and hasn't given up a run since April 6.

Nate Eovaldi set for rehab start
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1:57 am ET) Marlins pitcher Nate Eovaldi is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, before beginning his minor-league rehab assignment with 60-65 pitches in a start at Class A Jupiter Saturday, according to manager Mike Redmond.

Eovlaldi has been on the 60-day disabled list since spring training due to shoulder inflammation.

Rafael Betancourt could land on DL
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1:53 am ET) Rockies closer Rafael Betancourt, who left Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks with tightness in his right groin, could require a stint on the disabled list, according to The Denver Post.

Betancourt exited after throwing two pitches in the dirt. He doesn't believe his injury is serious, though it has bothered him for a month. He is scheduled to undergo an MRI Wednesday.

"We will see what will come from tomorrow. We have Thursday off, and I hope it will be fine if I don't pitch those two days. If it was more serious I would tell you. If it was really bad I would tell you. But it's getting tight every time, and it's not easy to pitch like that," Betancourt said.

Ryan Doumit collects RBI in return
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1:49 am ET) Twins designated hitter Ryan Doumit, who was held out of Monday's game due to general soreness, returned to the starting lineup Tuesday against the Braves.

Doumit, who played right field, slapped an RBI single in the eighth inning and finished 2 for 5 with an RBI in a 5-4 defeat. He is hitting .226 with three homers and 17 RBI in 124 at-bats.

Devin Mesoraco makes impact
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1:48 am ET) Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco hit his second home run of the season Tuesday, top cap off a 4-0 win over the Mets.

Mesoraco hit a solo home run in the ninth inning, to add an insurance run, after walking in a run in the first inning. Mesoraco finished the game 1 for 3 with two RBI, one run scored and one walk. He is batting .234 in 77 at-bats.

Scott Van Slyke makes pinch-hit appearance
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1:46 am ET) Dodgers outfielder Scott Van Slyke, who was not in the starting lineup due to a leg injury, made a pinch-hit appearance Tuesday night against Milwaukee.

Van Slyke struck out swinging for the final out of a 5-2 defeat. He is hitting 250 with three homers and four RBI.

Signs of life from Delmon Young
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1:44 am ET) Phillies outfielder Delmon Young hit his first home run in May Tuesday against the Marlins, snapping a 16-game homerless streak.

Young went 2 for 4 in the game with a solo home run to left-center. He added a sacrifice groundout that brought in another run in the seventh inning, in a 7-3 win. He scored once and drove in two, his first multi-RBI game of the season.

Young is batting just .214 with a .685 on-base plus slugging percentage in 18 games since returning from ankle surgery.

Matt Cain Ks seven in no-decision
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1:41 am ET) Giants pitcher Matt Cain turned in a solid performance as he struck out seven but did not factor in the decision Tuesday night against the Nationals.

Cain ran into trouble early on as he allowed a run-scoring doubles to both Ryan Zimmerman and Ian Desmond in the opening frame. He bounced back with six scoreless innings before his night was over. The right-hander yielded two runs, four hits and walked two over seven innings of work in a 4-2 win in extras.

Cain has allowed two runs ore fewer in each of his last three starts at home. He is scheduled to make his next start Monday at Oakland. He allowed one run and three hits over seven innings of work in his previous meeting against the A's in 2012.

Daniel Descalso provides big punch
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1:39 am ET) The Cardinals have had one of the league's better offenses over the last few years, but they received a big impact from an unlikely place Tuesday against the Padres.

Infielder Daniel Descalso reached base in all four of his plate appearances in the game, as he went 3 for 3 with a walk. He drove in five runs, with a grand slam and then an RBI double, to lead the Cardinals to a 10-2 win.

Descalso raised his batting average to .228 on the season, while hitting his second home run. He has 12 RBI in 30 games.

Rafael Soriano blows second straight save
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1:35 am ET) Nationals closer Rafael Soriano struggled yet again Tuesday against the Giants, blowing his second save in as many appearances.

Soriano entered the ninth inning of the game with a 2-1 lead and promptly allowed an infield single to let the tying run on base. He got the next two batters out and seemed to be on his way to the save, before allowing a game-tying triple to Gregor Blanco.

Soriano finished the inning without any more damage, but he blew his third save in 15 appearances. The Nationals would lose the game, 4-2, in 10 innings. Soriano has a 2.25 ERA in 20 innings of work.
