2011 Fantasy outlooks: Boston Red Sox

Scott White
  •

Listen to our latest Fantasy Baseball Podcast!

The Red Sox finished behind both the Yankees and the Rays for the first time last season, missing out on the playoffs for only the second time in eight seasons.

Injuries made all the difference. Kevin Youkilis, Dustin Pedroia, Jacoby Ellsbury and Josh Beckett each missed significant time, forcing relative unknowns like Ryan Kalish, Darnell McDonald, Eric Patterson and Daniel Nava into the lineup for weeks at a time. Considering the level of talent they lost and the amount of time they lost it, the Red Sox seemed a sure bet to improve even if they stood pat.

But they didn't stand pat. As if preparing for the next onslaught of injuries, the Red Sox made arguably the two biggest acquisitions of the offseason in Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez, who should both benefit from the move to a hitter's park. Of course, their contract situations left the Red Sox with no money to re-sign Adrian Beltre or Victor Martinez, but they had replacements ready for both. Kevin Youkilis will move back to third base, where his offense will have more value than at first base, and ex-prospect Jarrod Saltalamacchia will take over at catcher, where he shouldn't have much trouble replacing Martinez's defense even if he continues to disappoint offensively.

The one area the Red Sox didn't address in the offseason was the area that hurt them most last year: their pitching. Of course, with all the big names already in the rotation, they didn't have a clear way of upgrading. More than anything, they need Josh Beckett and John Lackey to return to form. Both had their usual stuff last year and showed improvement down the stretch, so you can expect them to rebound based solely on the law of averages.

But you could say that for the whole team. After a year in which everything that could go wrong did, the Red Sox have nowhere to go but up, and they have enough shiny new pieces to give them a roster overflowing with Fantasy talent.

Bounce-back player ... Josh Beckett, SP

The widespread skepticism over Beckett is baffling considering how easily and predictably he has rebounded from poor performances in the past. When he posted a 5.01 ERA for Boston in 2006, he rebounded with his one and only 20-win season. When he struggled with a 4.03 ERA during an injury-plagued 2008, he rebounded with career highs in innings and strikeouts. His career-worst numbers last year have a perfectly reasonable explanation: He had a strained back most of the year, missing two full months with it. He wasn't beginning any sort of decline at age 30. His velocity was normal; his strikeout rate was normal. He had the same ace stuff as always, which means, barring injury, he should return to the same ace numbers as always, as he has so many times before. Ignore the skeptics. Draft Beckett as your No. 4 starting pitcher and watch him perform like a No. 1.

Bust ... David Ortiz, DH

Ortiz did a disservice to Fantasy owners by batting .363 with 10 home runs last May. Sure, he won some games for them, reestablishing himself as a Fantasy mainstay after looking like a lost cause in April. But the resurgence could lead Fantasy owners to believe the end is further away than it actually is. It could come any day still. Ortiz is only two years removed from a season in which he hit .238 with the OPS (.794) of a middle infielder, and at age 35, he's old even by DH standards. His increasing strikeout rate indicates his bat is slowing down, and when it reaches its breaking point, his lack of athleticism will leave him nothing to fall back on. Even if he declines by just a little this year, he's not much better than Luke Scott or Hideki Matsui, especially now that his struggles against left-handers could force him into a platoon role. Don't bother with Ortiz unless he falls to you late.

Sleeper ... Jed Lowrie, SS

All of the Red Sox's retooling this offseason left Lowrie without a place to play, which is both bad news and good news in Fantasy. The bad news is Lowrie won't get consistent at-bats coming off a breakout season in which he ranked second in OPS among shortstop-eligible players, behind Troy Tulowitzki and ahead of Hanley Ramirez. The good news is he's still plenty affordable on Draft Day because, hey, nobody wants a backup. The Red Sox infield isn't a model of health, with Adrian Gonzalez, Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis each coming off surgery, and even if they each play 162 games, the Red Sox could ultimately decide Lowrie's bat is too valuable to leave on the bench and make Marco Scutaro their utility infielder instead. Lowrie was a top prospect. Now that he's finally healthy and living up to his potential, he won't go to waste. His opportunity will come, and when it does, you'll be glad you invested a late-round pick in him.

Nate Eovaldi set for rehab start
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1:57 am ET) Marlins pitcher Nate Eovaldi is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, before beginning his minor-league rehab assignment with 60-65 pitches in a start at Class A Jupiter Saturday, according to manager Mike Redmond.

Eovlaldi has been on the 60-day disabled list since spring training due to shoulder inflammation.

Rafael Betancourt could land on DL
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1:53 am ET) Rockies closer Rafael Betancourt, who left Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks with tightness in his right groin, could require a stint on the disabled list, according to The Denver Post.

Betancourt exited after throwing two pitches in the dirt. He doesn't believe his injury is serious, though it has bothered him for a month. He is scheduled to undergo an MRI Wednesday.

"We will see what will come from tomorrow. We have Thursday off, and I hope it will be fine if I don't pitch those two days. If it was more serious I would tell you. If it was really bad I would tell you. But it's getting tight every time, and it's not easy to pitch like that," Betancourt said.

Ryan Doumit collects RBI in return
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1:49 am ET) Twins designated hitter Ryan Doumit, who was held out of Monday's game due to general soreness, returned to the starting lineup Tuesday against the Braves.

Doumit, who played right field, slapped an RBI single in the eighth inning and finished 2 for 5 with an RBI in a 5-4 defeat. He is hitting .226 with three homers and 17 RBI in 124 at-bats.

Devin Mesoraco makes impact
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1:48 am ET) Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco hit his second home run of the season Tuesday, top cap off a 4-0 win over the Mets.

Mesoraco hit a solo home run in the ninth inning, to add an insurance run, after walking in a run in the first inning. Mesoraco finished the game 1 for 3 with two RBI, one run scored and one walk. He is batting .234 in 77 at-bats.

Scott Van Slyke makes pinch-hit appearance
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1:46 am ET) Dodgers outfielder Scott Van Slyke, who was not in the starting lineup due to a leg injury, made a pinch-hit appearance Tuesday night against Milwaukee.

Van Slyke struck out swinging for the final out of a 5-2 defeat. He is hitting 250 with three homers and four RBI.

Signs of life from Delmon Young
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1:44 am ET) Phillies outfielder Delmon Young hit his first home run in May Tuesday against the Marlins, snapping a 16-game homerless streak.

Young went 2 for 4 in the game with a solo home run to left-center. He added a sacrifice groundout that brought in another run in the seventh inning, in a 7-3 win. He scored once and drove in two, his first multi-RBI game of the season.

Young is batting just .214 with a .685 on-base plus slugging percentage in 18 games since returning from ankle surgery.

Matt Cain Ks seven in no-decision
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1:41 am ET) Giants pitcher Matt Cain turned in a solid performance as he struck out seven but did not factor in the decision Tuesday night against the Nationals.

Cain ran into trouble early on as he allowed a run-scoring doubles to both Ryan Zimmerman and Ian Desmond in the opening frame. He bounced back with six scoreless innings before his night was over. The right-hander yielded two runs, four hits and walked two over seven innings of work in a 4-2 win in extras.

Cain has allowed two runs ore fewer in each of his last three starts at home. He is scheduled to make his next start Monday at Oakland. He allowed one run and three hits over seven innings of work in his previous meeting against the A's in 2012.

Daniel Descalso provides big punch
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1:39 am ET) The Cardinals have had one of the league's better offenses over the last few years, but they received a big impact from an unlikely place Tuesday against the Padres.

Infielder Daniel Descalso reached base in all four of his plate appearances in the game, as he went 3 for 3 with a walk. He drove in five runs, with a grand slam and then an RBI double, to lead the Cardinals to a 10-2 win.

Descalso raised his batting average to .228 on the season, while hitting his second home run. He has 12 RBI in 30 games.

Rafael Soriano blows second straight save
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1:35 am ET) Nationals closer Rafael Soriano struggled yet again Tuesday against the Giants, blowing his second save in as many appearances.

Soriano entered the ninth inning of the game with a 2-1 lead and promptly allowed an infield single to let the tying run on base. He got the next two batters out and seemed to be on his way to the save, before allowing a game-tying triple to Gregor Blanco.

Soriano finished the inning without any more damage, but he blew his third save in 15 appearances. The Nationals would lose the game, 4-2, in 10 innings. Soriano has a 2.25 ERA in 20 innings of work.

Edinson Volquez drops second straight
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1:35 am ET) Padres starting pitcher Edinson Volquez endured a shaky outing as he suffered his fifth loss of the season Tuesday night against the Cardinals.

Volquez (3-5) pitched two scoreless innings before surrendering a run-scoring double to Matt Carpenter in the third inning. He then gave up four runs in the fifth, including a two-run single to Carlos Beltran. The right-hander was charged with five runs on eight hits in six innings of work. He struck out five and walked one in a 10-2 defeat.

Volquez has allowed five runs in each of his last two starts. He is 0-2 with a 6.35 ERA in his last three starts since May 3, when he won his third consecutive start. He is scheduled to make his next start Monday at Seattle. Volquez went 2-0 with a 0.68 ERA in two starts against the Mariners last season.
