2012 Draft Prep: American League 5x5 auction

Scott White

A 12-team, AL-only Rotisserie league is about as deep as it gets in Fantasy, and as you might expect, the bidding behavior changes as a result.

Not a single player reached the $40 threshold in this auction. In fact, the elite players all went for less than you'd generally see in a mixed league. Did we get it backward? Not really. In mixed leagues, you can afford to take a studs-and-duds approach -- shelling out $45 and $50 for the best of the best and filling out the rest of your roster with $1 and $2 sleepers -- because you know that if those sleepers don't pan out, you'll still find plenty of fallback options on the waiver wire.

But in a league this deep, there are no fallback options. What you draft is what you get, which means you're better off not taking so many chances. The more evenly you spread your money, the better you'll be able to survive whatever misfortunes come your way over the 162-game grind.

As usual, the dollar values here don't necessarily match up with the rankings. Timing and shortages (either at a position or within a category) explain why Brett Gardner went for $28 while Josh Hamilton only went for only $24. In general, steals were in short supply in this auction, leading to inflated price tags for players like Gardner, B.J. Upton ($30), Alejandro De Aza ($17) and Ben Revere ($13).

Trevor Cahill leaves with apparent hip injury
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(4:14 pm ET) Diamondbacks starter Trevor Cahill left his start Wednesday against Miami with an apparent hip injury, Fox Sports Arizona reports. Cahill was struck by a line drive in the hip in the first inning. No more details have been announced or reported.

Venues irrelevant for Ervin Santana
by Al Melchior | Data Analyst
(4:04 pm ET) As an Angel, Ervin Santana didn't take advantage of his pitcher-friendly home park, as he gave up home runs at high rates at home as well as on the road. In his first season with the Royals, Santana's splits have gotten truly zany, as I noted on Fantasy Baseball Today. So far, 11 of the 14 homers he has allowed have come at Kauffman Stadium, which is another tough venue for hitters to knock the ball out of.

That doesn't mean Fantasy owners should bench Santana in his home starts. Nine of the 11 homers he's allowed at Kauffman have come in just three starts, and each of his four other home outings have been quality starts. Also, all three of Santana's road homers came in a single start (vs. the White Sox) and his other six times out on the road have produced quality starts.

Santana gave up home runs in bunches last season, too, but as many as he allowed -- 39 in all -- he went through a couple of stretches where he wasn't all that homer-prone. Because he is walking so few batters, Santana can help with ERA and WHIP, so he should be started most weeks. He's put up nice stats so far this year, but just don't be surprised if he continues to be something of an adventure in Fantasy.

No rest for Jarrod Saltalamacchia
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:57 pm ET) Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia found himself back in the lineup Wednesday against the Rays after catching both games of Tuesday's doubleheader. He's caught five straight games with David Ross (concussion) back on the disabled list.

Saltalamacchia enters play Wednesday mired in a 2-for-22 slump in his last six games. However, he's batting .278 (15 for 54) with three home runs, four doubles and 10 RBI in 14 June games.

(3:49 pm ET) Giants reliever Santiago Casilla will throw bullpen Thursday, CSN San Francisco reports Wednesday. It will be his first bullpen session since having a cyst removed from his knee. He is expected to return after the All-Star break.

Pablo Sandoval to begin rehab Saturday
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(3:44 pm ET) Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval will begin a rehab assignment Saturday at high Class A San Jose, the San Francisco Chronicle reports Wednesday. Sandoval could be available to return to the Giants on Monday against Los Angeles.

James Darnell released by Padres

(3:33 pm ET) The Padres have released third baseman James Darnell, MLB.com reports. He was hitting .246/.281/.361 at Triple-A Tucson in 15 games.

Andrew Bailey to remain closer 'for the time being'
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:26 pm ET) During his weekly radio appearance on WEEI, Red Sox manager John Farrell said Wednesday reliever Andrew Bailey will remain the closer "for the time being." Bailey has been struggling lately, recording two blown saves and an 11.25 ERA in his last four appearances.

"Andrew Bailey is our closer, and yet we fully recognize that we have some work to do with him," Farrell said. "Right now, what has plagued him is that fastball has been up to his arm side, where left-handers have hurt him with the long ball. So getting him down in the strike zone consistently. And I think more than anything is just getting the breaking ball over in either the first pitch or fastball counts. But for the time being, he is definitely our closer."

Will Everth Cabrera be the same when he returns?
by Al Melchior | Data Analyst
(3:23 pm ET) Coming into this season, Fantasy owners knew that if the Padres gave Everth Cabrera a regular role, he could be a big-time steals producer. With 31 stolen bases less than halfway into the season, Cabrera has delivered as expected, but his .305 batting average has been a pleasant surprise.

Now Cabrera is on the disabled list with a hamstring strain, and understandably, owners are stashing him. We now have to live with the uncertainty over how long Cabrera will be out and how healthy he will be when he returns. What we can assess with more certainty is how well Cabrera is likely to perform should he be fully healed when he returns. He worked on his right-handed swing during the offseason, and this season Cabrera has hit .414 versus lefties, as opposed to .195 last season. Over his torrid last 28 games, Cabrera's overall batting average has surged as he has cut back dramatically on his strikeouts, though a .433 BABIP has inflated it somewhat.

It will remain to be seen whether Cabrera will be at 100 percent when he comes back and if he can sustain his recent improvements. Given how he spent his offseason and his minor-league track record of good contact skills, Cabrera is a strong bet to be a top 10 shortstop from the point of his return on forward.

Red Sox target June 25 for Clay Buchholz's return
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:22 pm ET) Red Sox manager John Farrell said Wednesday during his weekly radio spot on WEEI the team is targeting June 25 against the Rockies for Clay Buchholz's return to the rotation. Buchholz was placed on the disabled list Tuesday because of a strained AC joint in his shoulder.

"When we looked at the previous days missed, what we felt comfortable with in terms of the throwing needed to get back to have him be able to go five, six, hopefully seven innings on Saturday, we felt like it was a little too short in total numbers of days, and when you factor in rest period, throwing sessions," Farrell said. "So we can retroactive his DL status and make him available on the 24th, which is Monday. We’re off, so that game we open up home against Colorado, he’s eligible to start that. That gives us the ability to do a little bit of a [simulated] game Friday or Saturday over in Detroit. And probably gets him in a better place physically to walk out and start a big-league game."

Angel Pagan to begin rehab Thursday
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com
(3:19 pm ET) Giants outfielder Angel Pagan will begin a rehab assignment Thursday at high Class A San Jose, CSN San Francisco reports.

Pagan is scheduled for five innings in Thursday's game. It's unclear how long his rehab assignment will last, but Pagan should be able to return to the Giants within seven to 10 days assuming no setbacks.
