2012 Draft Prep: American League 5x5 auction

  •

A 12-team, AL-only Rotisserie league is about as deep as it gets in Fantasy, and as you might expect, the bidding behavior changes as a result.

Not a single player reached the $40 threshold in this auction. In fact, the elite players all went for less than you'd generally see in a mixed league. Did we get it backward? Not really. In mixed leagues, you can afford to take a studs-and-duds approach -- shelling out $45 and $50 for the best of the best and filling out the rest of your roster with $1 and $2 sleepers -- because you know that if those sleepers don't pan out, you'll still find plenty of fallback options on the waiver wire.

But in a league this deep, there are no fallback options. What you draft is what you get, which means you're better off not taking so many chances. The more evenly you spread your money, the better you'll be able to survive whatever misfortunes come your way over the 162-game grind.

As usual, the dollar values here don't necessarily match up with the rankings. Timing and shortages (either at a position or within a category) explain why Brett Gardner went for $28 while Josh Hamilton only went for only $24. In general, steals were in short supply in this auction, leading to inflated price tags for players like Gardner, B.J. Upton ($30), Alejandro De Aza ($17) and Ben Revere ($13).

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(9:54 pm ET) Rays starting pitcher Drew Smyly lasted 4 2/3 innings during his season debut Friday against the Blue Jays. Smyly began the season on the disabled list due to a shoulder injury.

The left-hander allowed two runs on four hits and no walks, while striking out five. He threw 55 of 79 pitches for strikes.

Smyly got off to a great start Friday, retiring the first 10 batters he faced before Devon Travis hit a one-out home run in the fourth inning. Smyly then allowed three straight singles. The last single in the sequence produced another run.

Smyly was then lifted in the fifth inning after retiring the first two batters. He is schedule to make his next start Wednesday at N.Y. Yankees.

A's OF Craig Gentry, hitless, moves down lineup
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(9:46 pm ET) With Athletics outfielder Craig Gentry more than struggling at the plate to start the year, manager Bob Melvin has decided to try and take some pressure off of him.

Gentry, normally Oakland's leadoff batter, was moved to eighth in the batting order. Gentry has started the season 0 for 22 with Melvin saying that he'll move back to the top spot once he starts hitting the ball.

“He’s been struggling some,” Melvin said, via the Bay Area News Group. “Everybody goes through that. It just works on you a little bit more when you start the season that way. Once Gentry gets going again, he’ll be back in the leadoff spot again against left-handers

A's P Jarrod Parker happy with how first rehab start went
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(9:33 pm ET) Despite giving up a home run and hitting a batter in his first minor-league rehab start, Athletics pitcher Jarrod Parker came away with mostly positive thoughts about being back on the mound.

“I might not have been very sharp," Parker said, via the Bay Area News Group. "My delivery was probably quick, but I was healthy enough to catch up and be where I wanted to be.”

Parker threw 56 pitches in 3 2/3 innings at Class A Stockton on Thursday. Coming off of Tommy John surgery, Parker is looking forward to being 100 percent again.

“Going through it for a second time, it’s not a cake walk, but you’re a little more comfortable with it,” Parker said. “We’re already a year out and everything has gone the way we wanted to go.”

Rockies P Jorge De La Rosa looks to rebound after disastrous first star
by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer
(9:27 pm ET) Rockies starting pitcher Jorge De La Rosa got knock around in his first start of the season Monday but says it was just a matter of adjusting his pitch location, reports the Denver Post.

"I left the ball up. I got hit hard. I have to do better," De La Rosa said.

The left hander, who began the season on the disabled list with a groin injury, was tagged for nine runs (seven earned) on nine hits in just two innings in his 2015 debut.

"He was almost too strong," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "The velocity was up. He was trying to go harder and harder and the ball kept getting elevated."

Mets P Jon Niese tossed from game while sitting in dugout
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(9:25 pm ET) Mets pitcher Jon Niese was ejected in Friday night's game against the Yankees despite not even being in the game.

Niese apparently said something in the fifth inning that umpire Doug Eddings wasn't OK with. Eddings then motioned toward the dugout that Niese was ejected from the game. This happened during Juan Lagares' at-bat.

NJ.com posted a vine of the ejection, with Eddings apparently saying, "Hey, I don't wanna hear anymore from you. That's it. You're gone."
