2012 Draft Prep: American League 5x5 auction

  •

A 12-team, AL-only Rotisserie league is about as deep as it gets in Fantasy, and as you might expect, the bidding behavior changes as a result.

Not a single player reached the $40 threshold in this auction. In fact, the elite players all went for less than you'd generally see in a mixed league. Did we get it backward? Not really. In mixed leagues, you can afford to take a studs-and-duds approach -- shelling out $45 and $50 for the best of the best and filling out the rest of your roster with $1 and $2 sleepers -- because you know that if those sleepers don't pan out, you'll still find plenty of fallback options on the waiver wire.

But in a league this deep, there are no fallback options. What you draft is what you get, which means you're better off not taking so many chances. The more evenly you spread your money, the better you'll be able to survive whatever misfortunes come your way over the 162-game grind.

As usual, the dollar values here don't necessarily match up with the rankings. Timing and shortages (either at a position or within a category) explain why Brett Gardner went for $28 while Josh Hamilton only went for only $24. In general, steals were in short supply in this auction, leading to inflated price tags for players like Gardner, B.J. Upton ($30), Alejandro De Aza ($17) and Ben Revere ($13).

'Increasingly likely' Rangers part ways with Alex Rios
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11:28 pm ET) Rangers outfielder Alex Rios "most likely" won't be back with the team next season, MLB.com reports.

The Rangers hold a $14-million option on Rios for 2015, but "it appears increasingly likely" the team will instead pay the $1-million buyout. Shin-Soo Choo is expected to shift to Rios' position next season.

"I'm just waiting to see what will happen," Rios said. "The team has to make the decision. You don't know if they are going to try going the free-agent route or go with a farm product. It's tough to tell."

Rios is questionable to play again this season due to a thumb injury.

Yordano Ventura turns in solid start
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(11:08 pm ET) Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura turned in a strong start Wednesday against the White Sox.

Ventura gave up one run on three hits over seven innings. He struck out seven and walked two during the outing. Ventura allowed his first run in the third inning. After loading the bases with no outs, Ventura gave up a sac fly, plating a run. The run didn’t seems to bother him much, as Ventura went on to toss four additional scoreless innings before leaving the game. Ventura threw 100 pitches.

With the win, Ventura improved to 13-10. He’ll take on the Indians in his next start.

Chris Sale gets knocked around Wednesday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(11:04 pm ET) White Sox pitcher Chris Sale got knocked around Wednesday against the Royals.

Sale allowed five runs on nine hits over five innings. He struck out six and walked two during the outing. The third inning proved to be problematic for Sale. After getting the first out of the inning, Sale put two men on base via the single. Lorenzo Cain made him pay, clubbed a three-run homer to center. Sale would give up an additional run during the inning on a single. Alcides Escobar would add to the scoring the following inning, belting a solo home run.

With the loss, Sale dropped to 12-4. He’ll take on the Tigers in his next start.

Adam Wainwright delivers complete-game shutout for 19th win
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(10:54 pm ET) Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright shined in a complete-game shutout Wednesday, giving up just seven hits and two walks in nine scoreless innings while striking out seven in his team's 2-0 victory over the Brewers.

Wainwright (19-9) moved into a share of the major-league lead in wins with the gem, tossing just 102 pitches in his nine innings of work. It's his fifth complete game and third shutout of the year. Wainwright owns a 2.45 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 171:49 K:BB ratio in 220 innings. He's slated to take on the Cubs Monday.

Mike Fiers strikes out seven in loss vs. Cardinals
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(10:50 pm ET) Brewers pitcher Mike Fiers took a loss Wednesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks in seven innings while striking out seven in his team's 2-0 defeat against the Cardinals.

Fiers (6-3) pitched six near flawless innings before running into trouble in the seventh, walking a batter and allowing two singles to bring home two runs, one with the help of an error. Still, he owns an excellent 1.78 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 66:15 K:BB ratio in 60 2/3 innings. Fiers is slated to face the Reds Tuesday.

Hector Rondon earns 25th save Wednesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(10:48 pm ET) Cubs closer Hector Rondon delivered his 25th save Wednesday, walking one batter in a scoreless ninth inning to finish off his team's 3-1 win over the Reds.

Rondon has allowed just one earned run in his last 15 innings, but after going 22 innings without walking a batter, he's issued a walk in back-to-back appearances. The closer owns a 2.62 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 60:15 K:BB ratio in 58 1/3 innings.

Carlos Carrasco goes the distance Wednesday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(10:41 pm ET) Indians starter Carlos Carrasco went the distance Wednesday against the Astros.

Carrasco allowed just two hits over nine scoreless innings. He struck out 12 and walked one during the outing. Carrasco got off to an exceptional start. He put his first batter on base in the third inning via the walk, but didn’t allow a hit until the bottom of the fourth inning. He would give up his only other hit in the ninth. After a two-out single by Jose Altuve, Carrasco was able to drop a three-pitch strikeout against Dexter Fowler to end the game. Carrasco threw just 98 pitches during the outing.

With the win, Carrasco improved to 8-5. He’ll take on the Royals in his next start.

Kyle Hendricks tosses seven one-run innings vs. Reds
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(10:40 pm ET) Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks earned a win Wednesday, allowing just one earned run on seven hits in seven innings and striking out four in his team's 3-1 victory over the Reds.

Hendricks (7-2) surrendered a run on a groundout in the first inning but was able to bounce back and throw six scoreless innings before exiting after just 80 pitches. It was his first quality start in three September tries. Hendricks owns a 2.28 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 43:14 K:BB ratio in 75 innings. He's scheduled to face the Cardinals next Wednesday.

Daniel Corcino strikes out six in loss vs. Cubs
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(10:40 pm ET) Reds pitcher Daniel Corcino took a loss Wednesday, allowing two earned runs on three hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings while striking out six in his team's 3-1 defeat against the Cubs.

Corcino (0-1) has given up just five hits in 11 2/3 innings over his first two starts, but he hasn't been able to break through with a win. The Cubs were able to push both runs across in the second inning after the Reds took a 1-0 lead in the first. Corcino owns a 4.40 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 13:6 K:BB ratio in 14 1/3 innings. He's not yet scheduled to start again but could slot in next Wednesday.

Brett Oberholtzer drops one Wednesday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(10:35 pm ET) Astros pitcher Brett Oberholtzer was a hard luck loser Wednesday against the Indians.

Oberholtzer allowed two runs on seven hits over 7 2/3 innings. He struck out three and did not issue any walks during the outing.
