2012 Draft Prep: Mixed League 5x5 auction

  •

After branching out for the American League and National League auctions, we kept our 5x5 mixed-league auction in house. So as you might expect, the 12 participants more or less went by the book.

No player went more than $11 over his (admittedly conservative) projected auction value, and the two who went most over -- Starlin Castro and Troy Tulowitzki -- just so happen to play the thinnest position in Fantasy. So if you came hoping to see a bunch of reaches, better luck next time. Nobody did anything to make anybody fall out of his chair.

Perhaps that's a good thing. After all, if this auction is meant to serve as an example to the masses, it should be as middle-of-the-road as possible. But the danger in an auction that follows the projected values so closely is it might give you a false sense of security. Not every auction -- particularly not every mixed-league auction -- has the highest player go for only $42. In leagues where everyone subscribes to the studs-and-duds approach, the first-round types might all go off the board in the $45-50 range, which will of course lead to dwindling dollars later in the auction, thereby creating value picks.

Even with this more conservative approach, a few bargains stand out. The winners of Andre Ethier and Melky Cabrera (both $5) benefited from the lack of money in circulation late in the auction, as did the winners of Ricky Romero ($10), Anibal Sanchez ($5) and Jeremy Hellickson ($4). Brian Wilson ($11) isn't really $6 better than Jose Valverde ($5) or $7 better than Joel Hanrahan ($4). And Billy Butler going for $7 after Eric Hosmer went for $23 is just wacky. Of course, Josh Hamilton at $12 stands out as well, but for a different reason. He was the first player nominated, when everyone was still rubbing the sleep out of their eyes.

Masahiro Tanaka cleared to begin throwing program
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(8:29 pm ET) Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka has been cleared to begin a throwing program Tuesday, according to MLB.com.

Tanaka was able to play catch Tuesday, and it was determined he could continue throwing. Manager Joe Girardi said Tanaka will throw a bullpen session soon. "He's scheduled to throw a bullpen [session] sometime this week and hopefully he's ready to do it," Girardi said. Tanaka posted a 2.51 ERA over 129 1/3 innings prior to injuring him elbow.

Zack Cozart away from the team temporarily
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(8:23 pm ET) Reds infielder Zack Cozart is away from the club after his wife gave birth, according to MLB.com.

Since rosters expanded, there was no need for the club to make a move to replace Cozart. He should return in a few days. Cozart is hitting .228/.275/.304 over 448 at-bats.

Reds considering surgery for Homer Bailey
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(8:21 pm ET) The Reds are considering surgery for pitcher Homer Bailey, according to MLB.com.

Bailey would have surgery on his right forearm. The club is currently weighing whether it's worth it for Bailey to have the surgery. Manager Bryan Price admitted the decision is on the table. "As we move forward, we'll consider [surgery] as something that would certainly rectify the problem," according to Price.

Having surgery would be troublesome, as it could impact Bailey's readiness for the 2015 season. "If you're going to have a surgical procedure done, you don't want to wait too long because it will affect the ability to be ready for the season," Price added.

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(7:53 pm ET) The Padres have designated pitcher Troy Patton and infielder Chris Nelson for assignment Tuesday.

(7:48 pm ET) The Athletics believe outfielder Coco Crisp could return this weekend, according to the Bay Area News Group.

Crisp has been sidelined since Friday due to a neck injury. He received an injection to relieve the pressure in his neck Tuesday. Crisp is hitting .254/.346/.397 over 370 at-bats.

Michael Morse to miss time with oblique injury
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(7:33 pm ET) Giants outfielder Michael Morse will miss a couple games due to a strained oblique, according to CSN.

Morse will miss the rest of the team's road trip. There's a chance he could return next week, when the team returns home. Morse is hitting .280/.338/.477 over 436 at-bats.

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(7:28 pm ET) Athletics pitcher Sean Doolittle was able to play catch Tuesday, according to CSN.

Doolittle was able to throw from 90 feet. It was the first time he played catch since injuring his oblique. Doolittle said the session went well. There's currently no return date for Doolittle.

Chris Young questionable to make his next start
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(7:24 pm ET) Mariners pitcher Chris Young is questionable to make his next start, according to 710 ESPN.

Young was pulled in the first inning Monday after giving up five runs. Manager Lloyd McClendon said he would monitor Young throughout the week in order to make sure he's 100 percent. If Young does well in the coming days, he should make the start, according to McClendon.

GM hints that Carlos Rodon won't be coming up
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(7:05 pm ET) White Sox general manager Rick Hahn indicated pitching prospect Carlos Rodon won't be called up during September, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

"It just wasn’t right time in [Rodon's] development to bring him to the big leagues and and ask him to get big league hitters out," Hahn said. Rodon was the third overall pick in the June draft, but was thought to be one of the closest players to the majors. The club could still bring Rodon up during the month, but it seems unlikely given Hahn's comments.

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(6:58 pm ET) Athletics designated hitter John Jaso was able to take batting practice Tuesday, according to FanGraphs.com.

Jaso has been dealing with concussion-like symptoms. He believes he'll be able to return soon, but can't ramp up his work too much. Jaso is hitting .264/.337/.430 over 307 at-bats.
