2012 Draft Prep: Mixed League 5x5 auction

After branching out for the American League and National League auctions, we kept our 5x5 mixed-league auction in house. So as you might expect, the 12 participants more or less went by the book.

No player went more than $11 over his (admittedly conservative) projected auction value, and the two who went most over -- Starlin Castro and Troy Tulowitzki -- just so happen to play the thinnest position in Fantasy. So if you came hoping to see a bunch of reaches, better luck next time. Nobody did anything to make anybody fall out of his chair.

Perhaps that's a good thing. After all, if this auction is meant to serve as an example to the masses, it should be as middle-of-the-road as possible. But the danger in an auction that follows the projected values so closely is it might give you a false sense of security. Not every auction -- particularly not every mixed-league auction -- has the highest player go for only $42. In leagues where everyone subscribes to the studs-and-duds approach, the first-round types might all go off the board in the $45-50 range, which will of course lead to dwindling dollars later in the auction, thereby creating value picks.

Even with this more conservative approach, a few bargains stand out. The winners of Andre Ethier and Melky Cabrera (both $5) benefited from the lack of money in circulation late in the auction, as did the winners of Ricky Romero ($10), Anibal Sanchez ($5) and Jeremy Hellickson ($4). Brian Wilson ($11) isn't really $6 better than Jose Valverde ($5) or $7 better than Joel Hanrahan ($4). And Billy Butler going for $7 after Eric Hosmer went for $23 is just wacky. Of course, Josh Hamilton at $12 stands out as well, but for a different reason. He was the first player nominated, when everyone was still rubbing the sleep out of their eyes.

Seth Maness picks up sixth win Monday
by R.J. White |
(7:43 pm ET) Cardinals pitcher Seth Maness retired the only batter he faced Monday, tossing two-thirds of a scoreless inning to pick up the win in his team's 5-4 victory over the Pirates.

Maness (6-3) entered the game with a man on first but watched the runner get caught attempting to steal second base. He then recorded a groundball out to end the seventh inning before the offense took the lead in the next frame. Maness owns a 3.03 ERA and 46:10 K:BB ratio in 68 1/3 innings.

Giancarlo Stanton swats 34th home run Monday
by R.J. White |
(7:40 pm ET) Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton went 1 for 4 with a walk and a solo home run in his team's 9-6 win over the Mets Monday.

Stanton delivered the first blow in the high-scoring game in the first inning with his NL-leading 34th home run. He has hit .292/.401/.554 with 99 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 504 at-bats.

Dilson Herrera slugs first major-league home run Monday
by R.J. White |
(7:38 pm ET) Mets infielder Dilson Herrera went 2 for 4 with a triple, a home run and three RBI in his team's 9-6 loss to the Marlins.

The two hits were his first for extra bases in his career. He's 4 for 10 since going 0 for 3 in his major-league debut Friday.

Jeurys Familia takes loss Monday vs. Marlins
by R.J. White |
(7:34 pm ET) Mets pitcher Jeurys Familia was saddled with a loss Monday, allowing three runs (one earned) on one hit and one walk in one-third of an inning in his team's 9-6 defeat against the Marlins.

Though Familia (2-4) only had one run marked as "earned," all three runs can be laid at his feet, as the reliever made two throwing errors on sacrifices and also uncorked a run-scoring wild pitch. He owns a 2.13 ERA and 57:30 K:BB ratio in 67 2/3 innings.

A.J. Ramos moves to 6-0 with win Monday
by R.J. White |
(7:31 pm ET) Marlins pitcher A.J. Ramos moved to 6-0 Monday, pitching a scoreless eighth inning in his team's 9-6 win over the Mets.

Ramos needed just eight pitches to retire the side in order in the eighth, extending his scoreless streak to 6 1/3 innings. He owns a 1.89 ERA and 65:37 K:BB ratio in 57 innings.

Brad Miller slugs ninth home run Monday
by R.J. White |
(7:28 pm ET) Mariners shortstop Brad Miller went 1 for 3 with a solo home run in his team's 6-1 loss to the A's Monday.

Miller followed up a 3-for-3 performance Sunday with his first blast in more than two months, but his playing time could continue to be spotty with rookie Chris Taylor posting a .378 OBP. Miller has hit .207/.281/.345 with nine home runs and 31 RBI in 319 at-bats.

Adam Dunn homers in first Oakland game
by R.J. White |
(7:25 pm ET) Athletics designated hitter Adam Dunn went 2 for 3 with a two-run home run in his team's 6-1 win over the Mariners Monday.

After homering in his last game with the White Sox Saturday, Dunn blasted his first Oakland home run in the first inning Monday. He owns a .224/.344/.443 line with 21 home runs and 56 RBI in 366 at-bats.

Jason Hammel twirls eight one-run innings Monday
by R.J. White |
(7:14 pm ET) Athletics pitcher Jason Hammel earned a win Monday, giving up one earned run on three hits and one walk in eight innings while striking out five in his team's 6-1 victory over the Mariners.

Hammel (10-10) gave up just three hits in an outing for the second straight start, and like in his previous game, gave up a solo home run for the opposition's only scoring on the starter. He owns a 3.58 ERA and 136:42 K:BB ratio in 155 2/3 innings. Hammel is scheduled to face the Astros Sunday.

Taijuan Walker tosses six one-run innings in relief Monday
by R.J. White |
(7:11 pm ET) Mariners pitcher Taijuan Walker came up big for the team Monday, giving up just one earned run on six hits and two walks in six innings while striking out five in his team's 6-1 loss to the A's.

Walker was called upon to start the second inning after starter Chris Young couldn't make it out of the first, and his first appearance back in the big leagues went exceedingly well, with Walker throwing 61 of his 89 pitches for strikes. He could be a contender to make a few starts in September. Walker owns a 3.00 ERA and 19:15 K:BB ratio in 21 innings.

Chris Young pulled in first inning Monday
by R.J. White |
(7:08 pm ET) Mariners pitcher Chris Young couldn't make it out of the first inning Monday, giving up five earned runs on four hits and two walks while recording just two outs in his team's 6-1 defeat against the A's.

Young (12-7) surrendered a one-out double in the first inning, but the fireworks didn't begin until there were two outs in the frame, when he gave up a two-run home run as well as two singles and two walks before being removed. Young owns a 3.46 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 94:54 K:BB ratio in 151 innings. He's scheduled to face the Rangers Saturday.
