2012 Draft Prep: Mixed League 5x5 auction

  •

After branching out for the American League and National League auctions, we kept our 5x5 mixed-league auction in house. So as you might expect, the 12 participants more or less went by the book.

No player went more than $11 over his (admittedly conservative) projected auction value, and the two who went most over -- Starlin Castro and Troy Tulowitzki -- just so happen to play the thinnest position in Fantasy. So if you came hoping to see a bunch of reaches, better luck next time. Nobody did anything to make anybody fall out of his chair.

Perhaps that's a good thing. After all, if this auction is meant to serve as an example to the masses, it should be as middle-of-the-road as possible. But the danger in an auction that follows the projected values so closely is it might give you a false sense of security. Not every auction -- particularly not every mixed-league auction -- has the highest player go for only $42. In leagues where everyone subscribes to the studs-and-duds approach, the first-round types might all go off the board in the $45-50 range, which will of course lead to dwindling dollars later in the auction, thereby creating value picks.

Even with this more conservative approach, a few bargains stand out. The winners of Andre Ethier and Melky Cabrera (both $5) benefited from the lack of money in circulation late in the auction, as did the winners of Ricky Romero ($10), Anibal Sanchez ($5) and Jeremy Hellickson ($4). Brian Wilson ($11) isn't really $6 better than Jose Valverde ($5) or $7 better than Joel Hanrahan ($4). And Billy Butler going for $7 after Eric Hosmer went for $23 is just wacky. Of course, Josh Hamilton at $12 stands out as well, but for a different reason. He was the first player nominated, when everyone was still rubbing the sleep out of their eyes.

Josh Zeid moved to 60-day DL
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3:39 pm ET) The Astros transferred reliever Josh Zeid to the 60-day disabled list Saturday, to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.

Zeid is out for the season due to July foot surgery, so this move doesn't change anything. He finished the season with a 6.97 ERA in 20 2/3 innings of work.

Xander Bogaerts returns to lineup, as expected
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3:31 pm ET) As expected, Red Sox infielder Xander Bogaerts is back in the team's lineup Saturday, after recovering from a concussion.

Bogaerts has been out a week while recovering, and he spent that time on the 7-day disabled list. He is hitting eighth in Saturday's game against the Rays, and carries a .223/.293/.333 line for the season into the action.

Robbie Grossman able to play after ankle injury
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3:17 pm ET) After missing one game with an ankle injury, Astros outfielder Robbie Grossman is back in the team's lineup for Saturday's game against the Rangers.

Grossman is batting leadoff and starting in left field against Texas, after recovering from the injury that forced him out Wednesday. Grossman is hitting .237/.339/.344 in the month of August, with 14 walks and 12 RBI.

MRI for Steve Pearce shows no oblique issue
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3:05 pm ET) Orioles first baseman Steve Pearce underwent an MRI Saturday which showed no additional damage beyond a strained abdominal muscle, MASNSports.com reports.

Pearce's MRI showed good news, in that he did not suffer an oblique or intercostals strain, which would likely cost him more time. He is not in the lineup for Saturday's game, but appears to be day to day at this point.

Report: Astros claim Samuel Deduno on outright waivers
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(2:58 pm ET) Twins pitcher Samuel Deduno has been claimed off waivers by the Astros Saturday, MLB.com reports.

Deduno was placed on outright waivers and will report to the Astros in the coming days, according to the report. He has pitched mostly out of the bullpen for the Twins this season, posting a 4.60 ERA in 92 innings of work.

Desmond Jennings sidelined for second straight by knee injury
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(2:53 pm ET) Rays outfielder Desmond Jennings is out of the lineup for the second straight game against the Red Sox Saturday, as he continues to deal with a sore left knee. At this point, he is still considered day to day moving forward.

Jeff Locke sent down; should be back shortly
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(2:18 pm ET) The Pirates optioned pitcher Jeff Locke to Triple-A Indianapolis Saturday, in order to free up a spot on the active roster.

Locke has been a consistent part of the team's rotation since June, and should continue to be so moving forward. He will almost certainly be brought back to the majors when rosters expand in a few days, though it is not clear if this impacts his scheduled start Tuesday against the Cardinals.

Brent Morel gets the call Saturday
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(2:13 pm ET) The Pirates recalled infielder Brent Morel from Triple-A Indianapolis Saturday, the team announced.

Morel spent the minimum 10 days in the minors prior to his recall, and should be able to spend the remainder of the season in the majors with rosters expanding in a few days. He has  hit just .143/.182/.190 in 21 at-bats in the majors this season.

Foot injury forced Pedro Alvarez to miss third straight
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12:56 pm ET) Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Reds, as he continues to be sidelined by a sprained left foot.

Alvarez has been out since Tuesday, as the injury has now cost him three games.

Travis Snider still out Saturday
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12:49 pm ET) Pirates outfielder Travis Snider is still out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Reds, as he continues to deal with a hamstring injury. He has not played since Wednesday, and remains day to day moving forward.
