2012 Draft Prep: National League 5x5 auction

  •

The National League may not have the overall offensive firepower of the American League, but it offers NL-only owners a bevy of top outfield options. In our 12-team, NL-only Rotisserie league auction, many of those elite outfielders, like Matt Kemp, Ryan Braun and Justin Upton, came off the board early and set the tone for big spending at the position. Six of the first nine players nominated were outfielders, and they cost their owners a collective $188, even though the group included a $5 Bryce Harper.

In fact, the highest bids came for players who qualify at what are arguably the NL's three deepest positions at the upper levels: outfield, shortstop and pitcher. Of the 16 players who fetched at least $30, only Joey Votto ($44) and Brandon Phillips ($30) played a position other than one of those three. This is not to say that position scarcity didn't matter, though. Votto has a greater advantage over his fellow elites at first base as compared to the top players at other positions, and he wound up being the most expensive player in the auction. Meanwhile, there are many similarly-productive options at the top of the second base, third base and catcher rankings, so owners were typically willing to wait to fill those positions, rather than spend $25 or more for the likes of Rickie Weeks or Brian McCann.

Scarcity also drove prices up as players were coming off the board. Phillips and Dee Gordon ($25) were both nominated relatively late, and both saw their values inflated compared to some similar alternatives. There weren't many late-auction bargains, as a few owners held onto their dollars deep into the auction, though Tim Hudson ($5) and Jason Kubel ($10) likely came more cheaply than they would have if they were nominated earlier.

Mets 2B Daniel Murphy leaves game with quad injury
by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer
(8:28 pm ET) Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy left Wednesday's game after just three innings after suffering a quad injury, according to SportsNet New York.

Murphy went 1 for 2 with a double and a RBI before leaving the game.

Sizzling Stephen Drew goes yard in Wednesday win
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(8:11 pm ET) For four-and-a-half months, Yankees second baseman Stephen Drew was cold at the plate. For four days, he's been red-hot. It remains to be seen if he can extend the tear.

Drew doubled and scored in the second inning Wednesday in Boston, but he was far from done. He clobbered a three-run homer in the third and singled in the fifth.

He has nine hits in his last 12 at-bats with two home runs and nine RBI.

Red Sox SP Henry Owens mashed by Yankees
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(8:05 pm ET) Red Sox rookie starter Henry Owens took the first pounding of his major league career Wednesday against the Yankees.

Owens gave up seven runs on six hits in just 1 2/3 innings with two walks and two strikeouts.

The lefty retired the Yankees in order in the first, then couldn't make it out of the second. Successive homers by Greg Bird and John David Murphy sent him reeling and run-scoring singles by Chris Young and Alex Rodriguez knocked him out.

The terrible performance sent his ERA skyrocketing from 4.03 to 5.87.

Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka benefits from run support in win
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(7:57 pm ET) The bad news for Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka is that his streak of quality starts is over. The good news is that his team scored so many runs for him Wednesday in Boston that it didn't matter.

Tanaka struggled after his team bolted out to a 12-1 lead. He allowed four runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings with one walk and five strikeouts.

He was cruising after an RBI double by David Ortiz in the first. But he gave up three runs in the sixth and seventh, including a blast by Xander Bogaerts.

Tanaka had five consecutive quality starts before faltering against the Red Sox.

Padres RP Shawn Kelley has nerve issue in forearm
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(7:42 pm ET) The Padres received some encouraging news Wednesday when reliever Shawn Kelley was diagnosed only with a nerve issue down the side of his forearm.

"It's not the elbow, which is good," assistant general manager Josh Stein told U-T San Diego.

Kelley left the game Tuesday night with the injury. It remains to be seen when he can return to the mound.

Dodgers promote OF Scott Schebler from Triple-A
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(7:34 pm ET) The Dodgers have recalled outfielder Scott Schebler from Triple-A Oklahoma City, the Orange County Register has reported.

Schebler owns a slash line of .241/.322/.410 and has just two hits in his last 20 at-bats. He played in one game for the Dodgers in late June and managed one hit in three tries.

Nationals OF Michael Taylor (knee) out of Wednesday lineup
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(7:27 pm ET) A nagging right knee problem has forced outfielder Michael Taylor to be scratched from the Nationals lineup Wednesday in St. Louis. He has been sidelined periodically with the ailment.

It could be affecting his performance at the plate. Taylor has just two hits in his last 18 at-bats.

Giants SS Brandon Crawford a no-go again Wednesday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(7:14 pm ET) As expected, Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford is again out of the lineup Wednesday night against the host Dodgers with a calf issue.

Bruce Bochy revealed Tuesday that he would be sidelined for at least a couple days.

Crawford is on a 2-for-23 slide. His .263 average is at its lowest point since July 20.

Angels DH Albert Pujols busts out with big day against Athletics
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(6:57 pm ET) Albert Pujols was in a slump for the Angels when he arrived at the ballpark in Oakland on Wednesday. He was out of a slump when he departed.

Pujols singled and scored in the first inning, then blasted a two-run homer in the second. He added an RBI groundout in the ninth.

It marked only his second multi-hit game since Aug. 12. Pujols now boasts a slash line of .249/.309/.495.

Angels SP Andrew Heaney recovers from bad start to win
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(6:51 pm ET) Angels rookie starter Andrew Heaney appeared destined for an early departure from the mound Wednesday in Oakland.

Heaney allowed three runs on five singles and a wild pitch in the first inning after his teammates handed him a 6-0 lead. But he did not fritter it away. He responded with six shutout innings and finished having yielded seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

The talented southpaw has given up just three runs in 13 innings over his last two starts. He has now won six of eight decisions and is sporting a 3.18 ERA.
