2012 Draft Prep: National League 5x5 auction

  •

The National League may not have the overall offensive firepower of the American League, but it offers NL-only owners a bevy of top outfield options. In our 12-team, NL-only Rotisserie league auction, many of those elite outfielders, like Matt Kemp, Ryan Braun and Justin Upton, came off the board early and set the tone for big spending at the position. Six of the first nine players nominated were outfielders, and they cost their owners a collective $188, even though the group included a $5 Bryce Harper.

In fact, the highest bids came for players who qualify at what are arguably the NL's three deepest positions at the upper levels: outfield, shortstop and pitcher. Of the 16 players who fetched at least $30, only Joey Votto ($44) and Brandon Phillips ($30) played a position other than one of those three. This is not to say that position scarcity didn't matter, though. Votto has a greater advantage over his fellow elites at first base as compared to the top players at other positions, and he wound up being the most expensive player in the auction. Meanwhile, there are many similarly-productive options at the top of the second base, third base and catcher rankings, so owners were typically willing to wait to fill those positions, rather than spend $25 or more for the likes of Rickie Weeks or Brian McCann.

Scarcity also drove prices up as players were coming off the board. Phillips and Dee Gordon ($25) were both nominated relatively late, and both saw their values inflated compared to some similar alternatives. There weren't many late-auction bargains, as a few owners held onto their dollars deep into the auction, though Tim Hudson ($5) and Jason Kubel ($10) likely came more cheaply than they would have if they were nominated earlier.

Michael Morse, Angel Pagan still sidelined Monday
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(6:18 pm ET) The Giants kept outfielders Michael Morse and Angel Pagan out of the starting lineup Monday night against the Dodgers, the team announced.

Rehabbing Taylor Guerrieri eager to return
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6:05 pm ET) Rays starting pitcher Taylor Guerrieri, who had Tommy John surgery in July 2013, should be recovered for the start of spring training, according to MLB.com, and is ready to get back to being one of the organization's top prospects after a season that was marred by both the injury and a 50-game suspension for a second positive test for a drug of abuse.

"I want to stay healthy," Guerrieri said. "I never want to go through this process again. And I've made great strides in my work ethic, my personality, too. Being injured will definitely humble you. All around, I would say it's a good thing that it happened."

Guerrieri, the 24th overall pick in the 2011, was brilliant in his first stint with the Rays in 2012, compiling a 1.04 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 7.8 strikeouts per nine innings in 12 starts for short-season Class A Hudson Valley. He wasn't quite as dominant before the injury was discovered in 2013, but he still managed a 2.01 ERA in 14 starts for low Class A Bowling Green.

In five starts rehabilitating at Rookie ball this year, he didn't allow an earned run, striking out 10 in 9 1/3 innings.

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5:50 pm ET) Jared Burton is expected to remain the closer for the Twins in their upcoming series against the Diamondbacks, while Glen Perkins works his way back from neck and shoulder injuries. Burton has converted 2 of 3 save chances this season, with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP over 62 innings of work.

Alex Avila no longer dealing with concussion, still awaiting clearance
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5:49 pm ET) Tigers trainer Kevin Rand told reporters that catcher Alex Avila is no longer experiencing  concussion-like symptoms. However, he is still awaiting clearance from Major League Baseball, the Detroit Free Press reports. Avila will not be in the starting lineup Monday night against the White Sox.

Roenis Elias could still pitch in relief
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5:49 pm ET) Though Mariners left-hander Roenis Elias has likely made his last start this season, both because of his sore left elbow and the number of innings he's thrown as a rookie, he could still return as a reliever, according to MLB.com. His role would be limited even if that's the case, though.

"I certainly think he's more than capable, if we decide to put him in the bullpen, of getting a lefty out in a big situation," manager Lloyd McClendon said.

Neftali Feliz back in form
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5:44 pm ET) Rangers closer Neftali Feliz's perfect ninth inning Sunday at the Angels really accentuated how far he's come in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Though it was his fourth straight perfect appearance, his three strikeouts were as many as he had in his previous seven appearances combined. Better yet, he had the stuff to back it up, according to the Dallas Morning News.

"I really liked the fastball today," interim manager Tim Bogar said. "He was aggressive with it and has shown the confidence to really let it go. When you go through an arm injury, it takes time to get that confidence back. He's back."

Indeed, according to BrooksBaseball.net, Feliz's average fastball velocity is at 95.6 mph in September, up from 93.7 mph in August and 92.9 mph in July. In 2011, his last year as a full-time reliever, it was at 97.3 mph. On Sunday, it was at 97.0 mph.

Feliz had a short response when asked if the Rangers need to shop for a closer this offseason.

"No. I'm 100 percent," he said.

Yankees DFA Josh Outman
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5:28 pm ET) The Yankees designated pitcher Josh Outman for assignment on Monday. Outman registered a 3.28 ERA over 24 2/3 innings of work before he was DFA'd by the Indians. He only pitched 3 2/3 innings before he was DFA'd by the Yankees.

Lisalverto Bonilla will get one last start on Wednesday
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5:24 pm ET) Rangers pitcher Lisalverto Bonilla will make his final start of the season Wednesday against the Astros, according to ESPN Dallas. Bonilla is 2-0 with a 4.30 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP over 14 2/3 innings of work this season.
