2012 Draft Prep: National League 5x5 auction

Al Melchior
  •

The National League may not have the overall offensive firepower of the American League, but it offers NL-only owners a bevy of top outfield options. In our 12-team, NL-only Rotisserie league auction, many of those elite outfielders, like Matt Kemp, Ryan Braun and Justin Upton, came off the board early and set the tone for big spending at the position. Six of the first nine players nominated were outfielders, and they cost their owners a collective $188, even though the group included a $5 Bryce Harper.

In fact, the highest bids came for players who qualify at what are arguably the NL's three deepest positions at the upper levels: outfield, shortstop and pitcher. Of the 16 players who fetched at least $30, only Joey Votto ($44) and Brandon Phillips ($30) played a position other than one of those three. This is not to say that position scarcity didn't matter, though. Votto has a greater advantage over his fellow elites at first base as compared to the top players at other positions, and he wound up being the most expensive player in the auction. Meanwhile, there are many similarly-productive options at the top of the second base, third base and catcher rankings, so owners were typically willing to wait to fill those positions, rather than spend $25 or more for the likes of Rickie Weeks or Brian McCann.

Scarcity also drove prices up as players were coming off the board. Phillips and Dee Gordon ($25) were both nominated relatively late, and both saw their values inflated compared to some similar alternatives. There weren't many late-auction bargains, as a few owners held onto their dollars deep into the auction, though Tim Hudson ($5) and Jason Kubel ($10) likely came more cheaply than they would have if they were nominated earlier.

Ian Kinsler receives three stitches between innings
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11:05 pm ET) Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler received three stitches on the left side of his chin after absorbing a collision at the plate.

He cut his chin on the mask of catcher John Jaso and had blood all over his uniform. He was stitched up and examined for any signs of a concussion by team doctors between innings. Kinsler remained in the game and finished 1 for 3 with a run scored in a 6-2 win. He is hitting .294 with seven homers and 22 RBI.

Andrew Bailey blows save, pulls win
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(11:03 pm ET) Red Sox closer Andrew Bailey was unsuccessful in doing his job Tuesday night in the second game of a doubleheader against the Rays. Bailey blew his third save of the season as he couldn't protect a 1-0 lead.

He gave up a solo homer to Kelly Johnson that tied the score at one before getting three outs. He threw 18 pitches as the game went into the bottom of the ninth.

Boston's Jonny Gomes hit a two-run walk-off homer for the Red Sox and Bailey came away the winning pitcher. He improved his record to 3-0 with a 3.22 ERA.

Bailey has given up five earned runs over his last four appearances. He's surrendered three homers and walked four over that stretch with two saves and two blown. He has eight saves in 11 chances.

Felix Doubront goes eight shutout in no-decision
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(10:56 pm ET) Red Sox starter Felix Doubront had never thrown a pitch in the eighth inning in a game in which he started in his major-league career -- until Tuesday against Tampa Bay, that is.

Doubront started the second game of a doubleheader for the Red Sox and took a no-decision after eight shutout innings due to Andrew Bailey's blown save in the ninth.

Doubront held a 1-0 lead before Bailey gave up a game-tying solo homer to Kelly Johnson. Doubront gave up just three hits and did not walk a batter to go along with six strikeouts. He threw 93 pitches and lowered his ERA to 4.38.

Doubront has been giving the Red Sox a chance to win, though his last victory came on June 1 at the Yankees. He is expected to make his next appearance Sunday at Detroit.

Zack Wheeler effectively wild in debut
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(10:48 pm ET) If Mets' pitching prospect Zack Wheeler had one obstacle to overcome in his battle to reach the majors, it was his control. In his major-league debut, that issue cropped up a few times, but Wheeler overcame his shaky command to earn a 6-1 win over the Braves.

Wheeler walked two batters in the first inning and five overall in six innings, but limited Atlanta's big-swinging offense to just one extra-base hit. Wheeler allowed four hits overall while striking out seven, though he threw just 55 of 102 pitches for strikes.

Wheeler didn't allow a run, and he picked up 14 of his 55 strikes via swings and misses. Wheeler is expected to be optioned back to Triple-A Las Vegas after the game, but he'll be recalled for his next turn in the rotation, scheduled for June 25 at the White Sox.

Ryan Braun seeks second opinion
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(10:47 pm ET) Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun visited Dr. Don Sheridan in Phoenix, Ariz. for a second opinion on his injured right thumb, MLB.com reports.

Braun, who is on the disabled list for the first time in his career, is expected to rejoin the team on Wednesday. He has been shut down from baseball activities since landing on the DL June 14. He is eligible to be activated from the disabled list as early as June 25.

Jeff Francis suffers through blowout
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(10:37 pm ET) Rockies starting pitcher Jeff Francis barely got out of the first inning Tuesday against Toronto, but eventually gutted out six innings in an 8-3 loss.

Francis gave up four runs on six hits in the first inning before settling down to hold the Blue Jays to three scoreless innings in a row beginning in the second. He allowed three solo home runs in the fifth and sixth innings to finish his outing.

Francis was tagged for eight runs on 10 hits in his six innings of work, while throwing 60 of 88 pitches for strikes. He struck out two, as his record dropped to 2-5.

Francis carries a 6.58 ERA into his next start, scheduled for Sunday in Washington.

Cubs considering adding Steve Clevenger
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(10:31 pm ET) Cubs manager Dale Sveum said Tuesday that the team has considered adding catcher Steve Clevenger to the big-league roster, MLB.com reports. Clevenger is hitting .385 in 11 rehab games with Triple-A Iowa.

"It's an option," Sveum said.

Clevenger opened the season with the Cubs, giving them a third catcher. He is working his way back from an oblique injury. He has played two games at third, one at first, and eight games at catcher in Triple-A.

Ryan Flaherty has two-hit night
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(10:22 pm ET) Orioles struggling second baseman Ryan Flaherty looked good against Justin Verlander Tuesday night in Detroit. Flaherty picked up two hits off the starter in the 5-2 win.

Flaherty went 2 for 4 in the game with two singles and is batting .170 on the year. He had gone 0 for 9 during the past three games entering Tuesday.

Matt Tuiasosopo goes deep in defeat
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
(10:20 pm ET) Tigers outfielder Matt Tuiasosopo provided the only offense for Detroit through the first five innings in Tuesday's loss to Baltimore.

Tuiasosopo took starter Zach Britton deep to right field for a solo home run, his third of the year, in the fifth. He finished 1 for 3 and is batting .333.

Tuiasosopo has seen just 69 at-bats this season. He has at least one hit in six of his last seven appearances with five runs scored, four doubles, a homer and three RBI over that span.

Manny Machado first to 100 hits
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com
