2012 Draft Prep: National League 5x5 auction

Al Melchior
  •

The National League may not have the overall offensive firepower of the American League, but it offers NL-only owners a bevy of top outfield options. In our 12-team, NL-only Rotisserie league auction, many of those elite outfielders, like Matt Kemp, Ryan Braun and Justin Upton, came off the board early and set the tone for big spending at the position. Six of the first nine players nominated were outfielders, and they cost their owners a collective $188, even though the group included a $5 Bryce Harper.

In fact, the highest bids came for players who qualify at what are arguably the NL's three deepest positions at the upper levels: outfield, shortstop and pitcher. Of the 16 players who fetched at least $30, only Joey Votto ($44) and Brandon Phillips ($30) played a position other than one of those three. This is not to say that position scarcity didn't matter, though. Votto has a greater advantage over his fellow elites at first base as compared to the top players at other positions, and he wound up being the most expensive player in the auction. Meanwhile, there are many similarly-productive options at the top of the second base, third base and catcher rankings, so owners were typically willing to wait to fill those positions, rather than spend $25 or more for the likes of Rickie Weeks or Brian McCann.

Scarcity also drove prices up as players were coming off the board. Phillips and Dee Gordon ($25) were both nominated relatively late, and both saw their values inflated compared to some similar alternatives. There weren't many late-auction bargains, as a few owners held onto their dollars deep into the auction, though Tim Hudson ($5) and Jason Kubel ($10) likely came more cheaply than they would have if they were nominated earlier.

Nate Eovaldi set for rehab start
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1:57 am ET) Marlins pitcher Nate Eovaldi is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, before beginning his minor-league rehab assignment with 60-65 pitches in a start at Class A Jupiter Saturday, according to manager Mike Redmond.

Eovlaldi has been on the 60-day disabled list since spring training due to shoulder inflammation.

Rafael Betancourt could land on DL
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1:53 am ET) Rockies closer Rafael Betancourt, who left Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks with tightness in his right groin, could require a stint on the disabled list, according to The Denver Post.

Betancourt exited after throwing two pitches in the dirt. He doesn't believe his injury is serious, though it has bothered him for a month. He is scheduled to undergo an MRI Wednesday.

"We will see what will come from tomorrow. We have Thursday off, and I hope it will be fine if I don't pitch those two days. If it was more serious I would tell you. If it was really bad I would tell you. But it's getting tight every time, and it's not easy to pitch like that," Betancourt said.

Ryan Doumit collects RBI in return
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1:49 am ET) Twins designated hitter Ryan Doumit, who was held out of Monday's game due to general soreness, returned to the starting lineup Tuesday against the Braves.

Doumit, who played right field, slapped an RBI single in the eighth inning and finished 2 for 5 with an RBI in a 5-4 defeat. He is hitting .226 with three homers and 17 RBI in 124 at-bats.

Devin Mesoraco makes impact
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1:48 am ET) Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco hit his second home run of the season Tuesday, top cap off a 4-0 win over the Mets.

Mesoraco hit a solo home run in the ninth inning, to add an insurance run, after walking in a run in the first inning. Mesoraco finished the game 1 for 3 with two RBI, one run scored and one walk. He is batting .234 in 77 at-bats.

Scott Van Slyke makes pinch-hit appearance
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1:46 am ET) Dodgers outfielder Scott Van Slyke, who was not in the starting lineup due to a leg injury, made a pinch-hit appearance Tuesday night against Milwaukee.

Van Slyke struck out swinging for the final out of a 5-2 defeat. He is hitting 250 with three homers and four RBI.

Signs of life from Delmon Young
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1:44 am ET) Phillies outfielder Delmon Young hit his first home run in May Tuesday against the Marlins, snapping a 16-game homerless streak.

Young went 2 for 4 in the game with a solo home run to left-center. He added a sacrifice groundout that brought in another run in the seventh inning, in a 7-3 win. He scored once and drove in two, his first multi-RBI game of the season.

Young is batting just .214 with a .685 on-base plus slugging percentage in 18 games since returning from ankle surgery.

Matt Cain Ks seven in no-decision
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1:41 am ET) Giants pitcher Matt Cain turned in a solid performance as he struck out seven but did not factor in the decision Tuesday night against the Nationals.

Cain ran into trouble early on as he allowed a run-scoring doubles to both Ryan Zimmerman and Ian Desmond in the opening frame. He bounced back with six scoreless innings before his night was over. The right-hander yielded two runs, four hits and walked two over seven innings of work in a 4-2 win in extras.

Cain has allowed two runs ore fewer in each of his last three starts at home. He is scheduled to make his next start Monday at Oakland. He allowed one run and three hits over seven innings of work in his previous meeting against the A's in 2012.

Daniel Descalso provides big punch
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1:39 am ET) The Cardinals have had one of the league's better offenses over the last few years, but they received a big impact from an unlikely place Tuesday against the Padres.

Infielder Daniel Descalso reached base in all four of his plate appearances in the game, as he went 3 for 3 with a walk. He drove in five runs, with a grand slam and then an RBI double, to lead the Cardinals to a 10-2 win.

Descalso raised his batting average to .228 on the season, while hitting his second home run. He has 12 RBI in 30 games.

Rafael Soriano blows second straight save
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1:35 am ET) Nationals closer Rafael Soriano struggled yet again Tuesday against the Giants, blowing his second save in as many appearances.

Soriano entered the ninth inning of the game with a 2-1 lead and promptly allowed an infield single to let the tying run on base. He got the next two batters out and seemed to be on his way to the save, before allowing a game-tying triple to Gregor Blanco.

Soriano finished the inning without any more damage, but he blew his third save in 15 appearances. The Nationals would lose the game, 4-2, in 10 innings. Soriano has a 2.25 ERA in 20 innings of work.

Edinson Volquez drops second straight
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1:35 am ET) Padres starting pitcher Edinson Volquez endured a shaky outing as he suffered his fifth loss of the season Tuesday night against the Cardinals.

Volquez (3-5) pitched two scoreless innings before surrendering a run-scoring double to Matt Carpenter in the third inning. He then gave up four runs in the fifth, including a two-run single to Carlos Beltran. The right-hander was charged with five runs on eight hits in six innings of work. He struck out five and walked one in a 10-2 defeat.

Volquez has allowed five runs in each of his last two starts. He is 0-2 with a 6.35 ERA in his last three starts since May 3, when he won his third consecutive start.
