A.J. Ellis adds a pinch of power Friday

(7:42 pm ET) Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis added a pinch of power Friday afternoon against the Cubs, homering twice and plating four runs in a 14-5 victory.

Ellis launched a two-run home run in the opening frame off Eric Jokisch. With two outs in the third inning, Ellis took Jokisch deep again for a two-run shot. He finished 2 for 4 with a walk, three runs scored and four RBI. He is hitting .193 with three homers and 23 RBI over 264 at-bats.

Michael Morse still a no-go Friday

(7:32 pm ET) Giants outfielder Michael Morse was held out of the starting lineup Friday night in San Diego. Morse has been sidelined since Aug.31 because of a strained oblique, and remains without a timetable for return. Morse hit .280/.338/.477 with 16 home runs and 61 RBI in 436 at-bats.

Angel Pagan back at leadoff spot Friday

(7:30 pm ET) Giants outfielder Angel Pagan returned to the leadoff spot Friday night in San Diego. Pagan was sidelined since Sunday because of back injuries. He hit .302/.342/.391 with three home runs, 27 RBI and 15 stolen bases in 381 at-bats prior to the injury.

Edwin Jackson gets obliterated in first start back from DL

(7:26 pm ET) Cubs pitcher Edwin Jackson failed to make it out of the opening frame in his first start back from a strained lat muscle on Friday at home against the Dodgers.

Jackson, who was activated from the disabled list before the game, served up a three-run home run to Matt Kemp and a run scoring single to Juan Uribe before leaving the game. He was shelled for five runs on four hits and one walk over two-thirds of an inning, dropping to 6-15 on the year.

Jackson owns a 6.38 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP over 27 starts (139 2/3 innings). His finale start of the season will come Friday at Milwaukee.


Clayton Kershaw becomes league's first 20-game winner

(7:20 pm ET) Dodgers starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw became the league's first 20-game winner Friday afternoon in Chicago against the Cubs.

Kershaw (20-3) bounced back from a rough opening frame and received more than enough run support to get the job done. He permitted a run-scoring double to Anthony Rizzo, a run-scoring triple to Jorge Soler and a sacrifice fly in the first for his only damage of the afternoon. He permitted three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out nine over five innings of a 14-5 victory.

Over his last four starts covering 29 innings, Kershaw has allowed seven earned runs. He owns a 1.80 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP over 26 starts (190 1/3 innings). His next start will come Wednesday at home against San Francisco.

Drew Rucinski on his way up

(7:20 pm ET) The Angels have promoted Drew Rucinski to the majors.

Rucinski pitched just one inning in the majors this season. He allowed two runs on four hits. Rucinski posted a 3.15 ERA over 148 2/3 minor-league innings. 


Alex Avila felt 'disoriented' after taking swings

(6:49 pm ET) Tigers catcher Alex Avila felt "disoriented" after taking swings in the batting cages recently, according to mlive.

Avila is dealing with post-concussion symptoms. He is not in the team's starting lineup Friday. Avila is hitting .223/.331/.371 over 372 at-bats.


Mariners not concerned about Roenis Elias' arm issue

(6:44 pm ET) The Mariners are not concerned about pitcher Roenis Elias' elbow injury, according to the Seattle Times

Elias had a precautionary MRI, but the club won't have results until Monday. He was also examined by doctors, who concluded there wasn't a "high level of concern" regarding the injury. Elias has likely been shut down for the rest of the year. 


Anibal Sanchez ready for simulated game

(6:40 pm ET) Tigers pitcher Anibal Sanchez will toss a simulated game Sunday, according to MLB.com.

Sanchez was able to throw 40 pitches off a mound Friday, and has been cleared for a simulated game. Sanchez believes he can return next week as long as he doesn't have a setback. 


Edwin Encarnacion had precautionary MRI

(6:35 pm ET) Blue Jays designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion had a precautionary MRI on his back, according to the Toronto Star.

Encarnacion injured himself in Baltimore, but is still in the starting lineup Friday. He's slated to serve as the team's designated hitter.
