2013 Draft Prep: Standard Rotisserie auction

Are you one of those owners who likes to spend freely on top-shelf talent? Then you would have fit right in with the 12 owners who took part in our recent mixed league Rotisserie auction.

The early nominations tend to set the tone for the rest of the auction, and that was certainly the case here. After the proceedings were kicked off with a $10 winning bid on Nationals' closer Rafael Soriano, the bidding got serious with four of the next five nominees (Miguel Cabrera, $45; Mike Trout, $44; Robinson Cano, $47; Ryan Braun, $45) netting more than $40. The aggressive bidding continued, as eight of the next 17 nominations drew winning bids of at least $30, and several others wound up in the upper 20s.

With so much money spent early on, there were plenty of bargains to be found throughout much of the auction. While Craig Kimbrel required a $25 bid with the 16th nomination, no other projected closer went for more than $12. Similarly, potential aces like Matt Cain, Jered Weaver and R.A. Dickey went for $20 or less. Dustin Pedroia ($27), Ian Kinsler ($26), Evan Longoria ($26) and David Wright ($24) may not have technically been bargains, but they all cost far less than Cano or Cabrera. Judging by average draft position, Cano and Cabrera are the consensus top players at their respective positions, but given the gap between their prices and those of the other top second base and third base options, it might have made sense to refrain from heated bidding in the early going.

Then again, auctions can be unpredictable. While bidding on midrange first basemen typically topped out in the lower-to-mid teens, Billy Butler ($24) cost substantially more, even though Paul Goldschmidt, Freddie Freeman, Anthony Rizzo and Mark Teixeira were still on the board. When Rizzo went for $18, the impact of position scarcity appeared to be kicking in, but then Freeman was available for $13 just eight nominations later. Bidding on Joe Mauer also defied the general pattern, as he cost only $18 despite the healthy bidding that was taking place in the early going. And Josh Beckett for $22? That was the artifact of a motivated owner who was flush with funds after spending modestly early on.

Here's the roster of our mostly spend-happy bidders.

Cubs' Maddon defends Starlin Castro following two-error game
by Michael Hurcomb |
(10:07 am ET) Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro heard the boos from the home crowd during Wednesday's 3-0 loss against the Nationals as he committed two more errors, giving him 11 on the season.

Castro has had his defensive struggles throughout his career. However, first-year manager Joe Maddon came to Castro's defense following his two-error game.

"He’s done a lot of good things,” Maddon said, per “I would say the problem mostly with him has been the routine play more than anything else. And I really believe that you can get a major-league caliber infielder to make the routine play. And he’s been doing that for awhile. He’s had a couple of mistakes -- I don’t disagree. But for the most part, I’ve been fine with him at shortstop."

White Sox add RP Daniel Webb to roster for doubleheader
by Michael Hurcomb |
(9:55 am ET) The White Sox recalled reliever Daniel Webb prior to Thursday's doubleheader against the Orioles. Webb will serve as the 26th man on the roster and be optioned back to the minors after Thursday's doubleheader.

Webb went 6-5 with a 3.99 ERA in 57 relief appearances in 2014.

Braves SP Alex Wood confident he is past early-season struggles
by Michael Hurcomb |
(9:48 am ET) Braves starting pitcher Alex Wood is confident his early-season struggles are behind him. Following Wednesday's win against the Dodgers, the lefty has won his last two starts and has a 2.88 ERA in four May starts.

"It's been a number of things," Wood said, per "The best comparison I can give is just putting the pieces of a puzzle together. You know it's going to click. It's a matter of when and putting those right parts in place. After tonight and [my recent side sessions], I feel like it's really starting to click.

Wood returned to the mound Wednesday after a 10-day layoff due to a stomach virus. He allowed one run on seven hits and two walks, while striking out six in seven innings.

"I'll be honest. I was nervous after not throwing for 10 days and being as sick as I was," Wood said. "It was kind of one of those things where before the game you tell yourself, 'I wonder what is going to happen tonight?'"

Orioles recall Tyler Wilson to start first game of doubleheader
by Michael Hurcomb |
(9:36 am ET) The Orioles recalled pitcher Tyler Wilson from Triple-A Norfolk to start the first game of Thursday's doubleheader against the White Sox. Wilson is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in two relief appearances for Baltimore this season.

Wilson is 2-4 with a 3.29 ERA in eight starts this season for Norfolk. He has 32 strikeouts and seven walks in 41 innings.

Rays activate Ryan Brett off DL, option him to Triple-A
by Michael Hurcomb |
(9:32 am ET) Rays infielder Ryan Brett was activated from the 15-day disabled list Thursday and optioned to Triple-A Durham, where he was on a rehab assignment. Brett had been sidelined since late April due to a left shoulder subluxation.

Red Sox's Cherington: David Ortiz likely to get day off Thursday
by Michael Hurcomb |
(9:28 am ET) Red Sox DH David Ortiz will likely be held out of the starting lineup Thursday against the Rangers to rest, general manager Ben Cherington told MLB Network Radio. If Ortiz is off Thursday, it will be the sixth time in 48 games he has been held out of the starting lineup.

The veteran slugger continues to struggle offensively. He is mired in a 1-for-20 slump in his last five games and is batting just .171 in his last 18 games, dropping his average from .250 to .216.

Ortiz also has just six home runs and a .377 slugging percentage on the season.

Dodgers' Friedman on Juan Jaime: 'He can really miss bats'
by R.J. White |
(1:46 am ET) Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman spoke Wednesday about pitcher Juan Jaime, who was acquired from the Braves along with three others players in a six-man deal earlier in the day and assigned to extended spring training, reports.

"He can really miss bats," Friedman said. "The limiting factor with him is the control. So we'll send him to Camelback and really attack the problem. If he can harness that even a little bit, we feel like we've added a really good player."

Jaime has posted a 5.93 ERA and 19:13 K:BB ratio in 13 2/3 innings with the Braves over two seasons. He has also walked nine batters in 5 1/3 innings in the minors this season after dishing out 36 walks in 41 innings with Triple-A Gwinnett in 2014.

Diamondbacks' Brad Ziegler blows save, takes loss Wednesday
by R.J. White |
(1:33 am ET) Diamondbacks closer Brad Ziegler was saddled with his second blown save and first loss of the season on Wednesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning in his team's 4-3 loss to the Cardinals.

Ziegler entered the ninth inning looking to protect a one-run lead but opened the frame by serving up a game-tying home run. He gave up a single before recording the first out of the inning, then walked two batters (one intentionally) to bring up Jhonny Peralta. The shortstop grounded into a fielder's choice, with the lead runner getting thrown out at home, but a throwing error by the catcher trying to record a double play brought the winning run home.

Ziegler owns a 1.25 ERA and 14:8 K:BB ratio in 21 2/3 innings.
