Positional and pitching eligibility for 2014

  •

With the new Fantasy season not too far away, it's time to start adjusting to new realities. Part of the fun of Fantasy Hot Stove season is sizing up how much we value players in light of how they performed last season and how we think their performance might change, but there's another set of considerations to ponder.

Specifically, we can take stock of changes in players' position eligibility. Some players will lose value simply because they are no longer eligible at positions where productivity is scarce. Others will become more desirable to own because they are now eligible at such positions. Likewise, there are players who will be more valuable on draft day than they would be otherwise because they will be eligible at multiple positions.

The default settings for CBSSports.com leagues give non-pitchers eligibility at a position for 2014 if they played 20 or more games there, or if it was the position they played most frequently, in 2013. If your leagues have a lower threshold for eligibility, then you may just be lucky enough to use Edwin Encarnacion at third base (10 games played), Victor Martinez at first base (11 games played), Brett Lawrie at second base (six games played) or Jurickson Profar at third (10 games played) or short (18 games played). To see how many games were played by last season's major leaguers at each position, you can refer to the table below.

For pitchers, they just had to make five starts to gain SP eligibility in standard CBSSports.com leagues, and 10 relief appearances earn a pitcher RP status. 27 pitchers will begin the 2014 season with dual SP/RP eligibility, and a handful of them should see their value greatly enhanced in leagues that allow RP slots.

For those of you who are planning on playing with default settings in CBSSports.com leagues, here is a summary of the most notable players who will be given eligibility at new positions or at multiple positions. These changes could help to boost or lower the stock of these players as you embark upon your 2014 drafts.

Players with Changes in Position Eligibility

The hitter whose value will probably be most affected by a change in eligibility is Mike Napoli. Though he did not play a single game at catcher, Fantasy owners were able to plug his power and run production into the C slot for all of 2013, since that was his primary position in 2012. Napoli ranked fifth among all catcher-eligible players in Fantasy points in standard leagues this past season, but he ranked just 23rd among first basemen. It's reasonable to expect a similar level of production next season, but instead of being a near-elite at his position, Napoli will be more of a late-round option, at least in standard mixed leagues.

Hanley Ramirez will retain his shortstop eligibility, but he will not be eligible at third base heading into 2014. Since his production is more valuable at shortstop than at third base, that shouldn't have much of an impact on his value, but owners will lose the flexibility of being able to shift Ramirez to a 3B or CI slot, if need be. Jedd Gyorko and Anthony Rendon owners are in similar situations, as neither player has retained his third base eligibility, but both have more value at second base anyway.

By not qualifying at shortstop, Brian Dozier, Nick Franklin and Josh Rutledge have made life a little tougher on their owners. All will be eligible at second base, and while Dozier could be a solid option at that position, Franklin and Rutledge may not even be fringe options in standard mixed leagues. That may not have been the case for the latter two if they could have provided the flexibility that comes with multi-positional eligibility. Also, if any of them break out, they would have a much better chance at cracking the elite tier at shortstop than at second base, which is a little more top-heavy with offensive talent.

A handful of mid- and late-season callups could potentially be hurt by having played a different position with their big league club. Junior Lake was shortstop-eligible last season, but given that he was primarily playing third base in the minors, he was due for position change. However, the Cubs used him exclusively as an outfielder, so the speedster will lose a great deal of value unless he converts back to an infield position.

The same could be true for Marcus Semien, though to a lesser degree, as the White Sox moved him from shortstop to third base last year. However, he could wind up either remaining at third base, supplanting Gordon Beckham at second base, or filling a utility role and gaining multi-positional eligibility. The Red Sox made the same short-to-third move with Xander Bogaerts, but it is anticipated that he will be moved back to shortstop in 2014. Owners would just have to tough it out with Bogaerts at third base until he plays his first five games at shortstop, possibly having to wait only one weekly scoring period.

Top prospects Billy Hamilton and Nick Castellanos will go into 2014 solely as outfielders, respectively losing eligibility at shortstop at third base. However, as long as the Tigers stick to their plan of starting Castellanos at third base, his owners won't have to wait long to be freed from using the rookie solely as an outfielder.

Hisashi Iwakuma, Kris Medlen, Shelby Miller, Andrew Cashner, Tony Cingrani and Alexi Ogando all gained value in standard Head-to-Head leagues last season, given that each had SPARP (starting pitcher as relief pitcher) status. All enter 2014 with starting eligibility only, so most will lose some Head-to-Head value. Then again, Miller, Cashner, Cingrani and Ogando should all enjoy increased innings, so each could be a solid middle-round pick, even without RP-eligibility.

Finally, should the Cardinals move Carlos Martinez and Seth Maness back into starting roles, Fantasy owners will have to wait until they make five starts before they can use them in SP slots, as both enter 2014 as RP-eligible only. Given the Cardinals' crowded rotation situation, owners shouldn't count on them attaining dual eligibility when determining their value on draft day. Kyle Drabek, who made three relief appearances in September for the Blue Jays in his return from Tommy John surgery, appears to have a stronger chance to join the 2014 SPARP class at some point during the season.

Players with Eligibility at Multiple Positions

Roster flexibility isn't always top-of-mind in the midst of a draft or auction, but when injuries and slumps hit, you'll be glad if you thought to populate your roster with a few players who can play multiple positions, especially in leagues where waiver replacements require a FAAB expenditure. Ben Zobrist and Martin Prado have been useful as multi-position players for a few years now, and Matt Carpenter joined their ranks this year. Zobrist (2B, OF, SS) and Prado (3B, 2B, OF) will both be three-position players in 2014, and while Carpenter loses his first base eligibility, he can still be used at second and third base.

Jed Lowrie may not be significantly more valuable at shortstop than at second base, but because he can be used at either position, he affords you the opportunity to scan both positions on waivers if you need a replacement at one of the middle infield positions.

Owners can still enjoy what might be Dustin Ackley's last season of second base eligibility this year, and without it, it's hard to imagine him having mixed-league relevance, barring a breakout of epic proportions. Emilio Bonifacio, like Ackley, has his value enhanced by being eligible at second base, though as a utility player, he should only be on the radar of Rotisserie owners looking for steals.

Hitters Only eligible at DH

Once again, David Ortiz headlines the small list of draftable players who are eligible exclusively at DH. Victor Martinez earned enough playing time at first base to be eligible there by July, but since he wound up with only 11 games there by year's end, he goes back to being strictly a DH heading into 2014. Billy Butler managed to be first base eligible for all of 2013, but with only seven games at first base, he loses that status for the start of next season.

Pitchers with Dual SP/RP Eligibility

Iwakuma, Medlen and Miler may no longer be among the SPARP contingent, but there are some new enticing options this time around. Alex Wood and Kevin Gausman could be 2014's Iwakuma, who led all relief-eligible pitchers in Fantasy points in his first full season as a starter.

Tyson Ross and Garrett Richards enjoyed breakouts in the second half of 2013, and Ross in particular could be among the top 20 relief-eligible pitchers next season. Hector Santiago, Brett Anderson, Joe Kelly, David Phelps and Tyler Thornburg are also worth late-round consideration in formats where they can be used as relievers. All could be bypassed in standard and even some deeper mixed leagues if they were merely SP-eligible.

A.J. Ellis making plenty of progress in recovery
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12:57 am ET) Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis is making solid progress in his recovery from surgery on his left knee, though he hasn't been cleared for all baseball activities, as he told MLB.com Friday.

"I can do everything, baseball-wise, except run," Ellis said Friday, just 10 days after his procedure. "And that's not a big part of my game."

Ellis did not that his recovery might be faster than expected as this is his second time undergoing this type of procedure. He is recovering from a cleanup of the medial meniscus in his left knee, and is expected to miss around four weeks of action.

"It's a little more accelerated this time, because it was in the offseason [after the 2012 season] the last time," Ellis said. "The biggest thing is, I felt so much better when I woke up the morning after surgery, and it's all been good since."

Matt Daley gets the call
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12:54 am ET) The Yankees called up pitcher Matt Daley from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following Friday's loss to the Rays. Daley is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA over four relief appearances (five innings) in the minors this season.

David Phelps exits game after taking liner off hand
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12:50 am ET) Yankees reliever David Phelps had his relief outing cut short Friday, after taking a liner off the hand in the seventh inning of his team's 11-5 loss to Tampa Bay, YES Network reports.

Phelps lasted only 15 pitches and was charged with a run and a hit over two-thirds of an inning. He owns a 5.40 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 8 1/3 innings pitched to start the season. His status remains uncertain moving forward.

David Freese still uncertain if he'll return Saturday
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12:46 am ET) Angels third baseman David Freese told MLB.com Friday that he injured his hamstring during his last at-bat on Wednesday. Although he was available as a pinch-hitter in Friday's win over the Tigers, he remains uncertain if he'll return to the starting lineup for Saturday's tilt against Detroit.

Jason Vargas hurls gem, blanks Twins
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12:41 am ET) Royals starting pitcher Jason Vargas continued his recent success with another gem, earning his second win of the season Friday night against Minnesota. The southpaw surrendered only seven hits and one walk while striking out four over seven innings pitched in a 5-0 victory.

Vargas has allowed just two runs over his last 14 innings pitches, all coming against the Twins. He owns a 1.24 ERA along with a sterling 0.93 WHIP over his first four starts (29 innings). He'll be seeking his third win when he takes the hill Wednesday in Cleveland.

Mike Minor washed out Friday, nearing a return
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12:36 am ET) Braves starting pitcher Mike Minor was supposed to make his next minor-league rehab assignment for Triple-A Gwinnett Friday, but rain washed his outing out. He will instead pitch Saturday, as he continues his comeback from shoulder soreness and a urinary tract infection that delayed his season.

Minor could be nearing the end of his rehab assignment if he gets through Saturday's outing without incident. MLB.com reported Friday he could be brought off the DL as early as Wednesday against the Marlins, though manager Fredi Gonzalez said the team won't push him if he needs more time.

"If Mikey says [he'd] like to get another, it wouldn't be a problem," Gonzalez said. "We're thinking he is going to get through this start and be great. Then we have got to come up with a decision."

Ricky Nolasco knocked around in loss to Kansas City
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12:35 am ET) Twins pitcher Ricky Nolasco was knocked around and charged with his second loss of the season Friday night against the Royals. The right-hander permitted five runs on 11 hits and no walks while striking out three over 5 2/3 innings pitched.

Nolasco owns a 6.08 ERA with a 12:7 K:BB ratio over 23 2/3 innings pitched. He will make his next start Thursday at Tampa Bay.

Gavin Floyd hit hard in rehab outing
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12:32 am ET) Braves starter Gavin Floyd continued his minor-league rehab assignment at Double-A Mississippi Friday, and he wasn't all that sharp this time around.

Floyd tossed 80 pitches in the game, but made it through just 4 2/3 innings. He allowed five runs -- four earned -- on four hits and a walk, while striking out six batters.

Floyd, recovering from Tommy John surgery is likely still a few more rehab outings away from returning. According to MLB.com, the earliest he might be seen in the majors is April 29.

Martin Perez twirls complete game shutout vs. White Sox
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(12:30 am ET) Rangers pitcher Martin Perez continued his recent success with a dominant outing, tossing a complete game shutout win against the White Sox on Friday.

Perez yielded only three hits and one walks while striking out eight, receiving more than enough run support in a 12-0 victory. He retired the last 12 batters to secure his second career complete game. He tossed 109 pitches, 70 of which were called for strikes.

Perez owns a 1.86 ERA and 1.03 WHIP with 20:7 K:BB ratio over 29 innings pitched. He'll look for his fourth straight win Wednesday in Oakland.

Nate Eovaldi settles for another tough no-decision
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12:28 am ET) Marlins starting pitcher Nate Eovaldi twirled a quality start Friday against the Mariners, but ended up settled for a no-decision in the 8-4 win.

Eovaldi got out to an early lead, as the Marlins went up 4-2 after three innings, and neither of the first two runs were charged to him. He would allow just one more run in the fifth inning, but the bullpen could not make his lead stand up until Giancarlo Stanton's walkoff home run.

Eovaldi was charged with one run in six innings of work, on seven hits and a pair of walks. He struck out five batters and racked up 10 groundball outs for the third straight start.

Eovaldi heads into his next start 1-1 with a 3.55 ERA. He will try to keep his solid pitching up in his next start, set for Wednesday against the Braves.
