Orioles' Manny Machado plays in first game since August

(5:37 pm ET) Orioles third baseman Manny Machado struggled with an 0-for-3 day at the plate in his first game since back from an elbow injury.

Manager Buck Showalter was happy Machado finally got on the field, according to MASN.com.

"Manny needs to play in some games. He's tired of all the work. You think of all the work he's done since he was able to start going on the field after the surgery and you think about the last time he got to play a lot," Showalter said. "We'll try to get as many reps for him as we can, because physically it's not a challenge for him. He's in good shape."


Dodgers' Greinke, Ryu could face hitters soon

(5:36 pm ET) Dodgers pitchers Zack Greinke and Hyun-Jin Ryu could face hitters on Friday or Saturday, according to MLB.com.

Both players are dealing with injuries, and remain one start behind the other pitchers on the roster. Greinke has an elbow issue. Ryu is dealing with back stiffness. If they are able to face pitchers this weekend, both players could appear in games as early as Wednesday or Thursday. 


Pirates' Cumpton (elbow) not sure when he'll visit Dr. James Andrews

(5:36 pm ET) Pirates pitcher Brandon Cumpton told reporters he's not sure when he'll visit Dr. James Andrews to get his elbow checked out, but will likely come at some point next week, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Cumpton experienced discomfort in his elbow when he was throwing live batting practice at the start of camp.

Astros' Vincent Velasquez still unable to throw off mound

(5:32 pm ET) Astros pitcher Vincent Velasquez has yet to throw off a mound, according to MLB.com.

Velasquez is dealing with a lat injury, and was expected to miss 2-3 weeks. He has not thrown off a mound yet, and could require more time before he's ready to return to action. Velasquez is fighting for a roster spot this spring. 


Tigers SS Jose Iglesias ran full bore on Wednesday

(5:30 pm ET) Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias (shins) told reporters he ran full bore for the first time this spring in Wednesday's Grapefruit League contest against Baltimore, according to Detroit Free Press. He went without a hit in his first two at-bats and left one runner on base in a 5-4 victory.

"I was really happy with the way I ran," Iglesias said.


Mets' Kirk Nieuwenhuis starts spring campaign with four hits

(5:24 pm ET) Mets outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis had four singles in four at-bats during Wednesday's spring opener against the Braves. He added one RBI and one run.

Nieuwenhuis is competing for a spot on the Mets' bench as a reserve outfielder.

"I thought he had a good day," manager Terry Collins said, per NJ.com. "It's good for him. He's fighting for a big spot on this club. He's out of options so it's nice to see him have a big day."


Astros' Brad Peacock able to throw bullpen session on Wednesday

(5:20 pm ET) Astros pitcher Brad Peacock was able to get through a bullpen session on Wednesday, according to MLB.com.

Peacock is recovering from offseason hip surgery. He's working his way toward live batting practice, but is not expected to throw BP for a few more days. Peacock posted a 4.72 ERA over 131 2/3 innings last season. 


Yankees pitcher Nathan Eovaldi happy with debut for New York

(5:15 pm ET) Yankees pitcher Nathan Eovaldi made his debut in pinstripes Wednesday, throwing two innings and allowing two hits and one earned run.

"It's definitely special," Eovaldi said. "It's the same game. You're just in a different uniform. That's the mentality I was trying to take out there to compete."

Eovaldi is building his relationship with Brian McCann as he looks to be a workhouse in the rotation.

"Everything has been good," Eovaldi said. "I got to throw one bullpen [session] with him previously. He's awesome back there. Today, I told him I just wanted to work on moving the ball in and out and work on the split. He said, 'Let's go.'"


Tigers' Ian Krol making a big impression in camp

(5:12 pm ET) Tigers pitcher Ian Krol has impressed everyone during camp, according to mlive.com.

"He's been outstanding this spring," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "Not only with his work effort, but he's the first one to the clubhouse. He's really paying attention to every part of his career right now."

That was by design. Krol worked hard in the offseason after struggled physically in 2014. "I worked extremely hard," Krol said. "Physical therapy, working out, you name it. I kicked my butt in the offseason. I was just determined."

Krol is competing for a spot in the team's bullpen this spring. The 23-year-old posted a 4.96 ERA over 32 2/3 innings last year. 


White Sox pitcher Jose Quintana solid in spring training debut

(5:04 pm ET) White Sox starting pitcher Jose Quintana made a case for himself Wednesday to be the opening day starter for Chicago.

Quintana pitched two hitless innings against the Dodgers in his spring training debut, including 20 strikes on 26 pitches.

"It's time for preparation, throw good pitches, more strikes the first time," Quintana said. "The first hitter I was a little bit nervous because I wanted to throw a good pitch, but I feel really good. I threw the fastball in and out really good."

Quintana would like to get to start opening day, but knows it's out of his hands.

"I don't have control over that, Quintana said. "I would like one time, but I think Sale is the first guy here, and we need him to throw the Opening Day, and we want him to come back healthy."
