Report: Nolan Arenado probably finished for season

(5:01 pm ET) The chest contusion and pneumonia that has sidelined Rockies slugging third baseman Nolan Arenado have improved, but he has likely played his last game this season, according to the Denver Post.

If Arenado is indeed done, he will finish the year with a stat line of .287/.328/.500 and 18 home runs in 432 at-bats.


Jordy Mercer gets thumbs-up for Thursday action

(4:54 pm ET) Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer is back in action Thursday against visiting Boston. He had been absent from the lineup since Sunday with a back problem.

Mercer returns on a roll. He was 14 of 36 in his last eight games before going down.


Mark Trumbo catching break Thursday

(4:49 pm ET) Diamondbacks slugging left fielder Mark Trumbo is set to sit Thursday night against Colorado. His four-game hitting streak was halted Wednesday.

Trumbo has just nine home runs in 293 at-bats this season, but is on his typical RBI pace with 49.


Diamondbacks pair continues absence from lineup Thursday

The injured pair are outfielder David Peralta and third baseman Jake Lamb. Peralta has been out for two weeks while Lamb has not started since Friday.

(4:39 pm ET) The Marlins are set to sit corner infielders Garrett Jones and Casey McGehee in their Thursday night clash against visiting Washington. Jeff Baker has been pegged to start at first with Enrique Hernandez at third.

McGehee is in the midst of a six-game hitting streak.


Hanley Ramirez ready to roll again Thursday in Windy City

(4:25 pm ET) Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez has returned to the lineup Thursday aganst the host Cubs after missing two starts with an elbow ailment.

Ramirez had 13 hits in his previous seven games before going down. His stat line on the season is .277/.362/.444.


Jered Weaver out, Wade LeBlanc in for Thursday start

(4:20 pm ET) Angels veteran right-hander Jered Weaver has been scratched from his Thursday start against visiting Seattle. Wade LeBlanc, who was to replace the injured Matt Shoemaker this Saturday, will pitch in place of Weaver instead.

Weaver is not hurt, per the Orange County Register. The move was made to give him extra rest and line up the playoff rotation.


Struggling Adam LaRoche gets second straight night off

(4:05 pm ET) Scuffling Nationals first baseman Adam LaRoche has been given the night off Thursday in Miami. Kevin Frandsen is set to start instead. LaRoche is hitless in his last 15 at-bats.

LaRoche also sat Wednesday, as did all the Washington starters after the clinching of the division title.


Jean Segura can't hit Shelby Miller - and won't Thursday

(4:00 pm ET) The Brewers are sitting shortstop Jean Segura in St Louis on Thursday in favor of Hector Gomez. He is hitless in 15 at-bats lifetime against Cardinals starter Shelby Miller.

Segura has not driven in a run in his last 21 games.


Dizziness causes Dioner Navarro scratch Thursday

(3:48 pm ET) A bout with dizziness that prevented Blue Jays catcher Dioner Navarro from playing Wednesday has also kept him out of the lineup Thursday night against the Yankees. Josh Thole is set to start instead.
