In the process, we've become so acutely aware of each other's sleepers that we don't expect to get them at a discount anymore. The value picks in our drafts aren't the most unheralded players, but the victims of circumstance, whether it's Carlos Gomez in Round 7 because of the stigma against high strikeout rates in this particular format, Manny Machado in Round 10 because of a couple renegade drafters who threw off the distribution of talent at third base by selecting Kyle Seager and Pedro Alvarez several rounds earlier, or Brad Miller going in Round 17 because everyone's shortstop spot was already filled.

So while drafting Jose Abreu in Round 9, Adam Eaton in Round 11 or George Springer in Round 15 is less than ideal, it may be your only chance of getting them in a league with experienced drafters. And our willingness to go the extra round in our latest 12-team Head-to-Head points mock draft shows just how much we value them.

What format is that? In case you're unfamiliar, here's the scoring breakdown ...

In Head-to-Head points leagues, starting pitchers are in higher demand than in standard Rotisserie formats. Head-to-Head leagues offer a bench, which allows for lineup substitutions, which give Fantasy owners a chance to maximize the number of starts they get from their pitching staff each week, which makes starting pitchers the best use of those bench spots.

But in this particular draft, it was more evident in the lower tiers than the higher ones. While Clayton Kershaw went in Round 1, as usual, the second starting pitcher (Max Scherzer) didn't go until late in Round 2, creating a later-than-usual run in Rounds 3, 4 and 5.

The way most everyone approached third base, having learned that it thins out surprisingly quickly, had something to do with it. Particularly in Head-to-Head points leagues, which favor patient, disciplined hitters, you're either settling for second-rate production or hoping to get lucky after the first eight or so go off the board.

It began with Evan Longoria and Adrian Beltre going in the first half of the second round, continued with Matt Carpenter and David Wright early in the third, and peaked with Seager in Round 6 and Alvarez in Round 7.

Kind of makes Machado in Round 10 all the more surprising, doesn't it?

Even I played a part, reaching for Martin Prado late in Round 5 after just missing on Josh Donaldson and Ryan Zimmerman. Hey, in my rankings, he's the last of those safe eight.

A quick word on my team: I'll admit it's not my best work. I don't like picking after the top eight or so in a 12-team league, considering all the true first-rounders gone by that point, and believe the best way to salvage it is to take whichever of Hanley Ramirez or Troy Tulowitzki falls to the second round after taking the best hitter available in the first. If it's a risky pick anyway, might as well knock out the weakest position, right? But after Joe Polito took Ramirez sixth overall, I knew I couldn't trust Tulowitzki to last to Round 2, which changed the entire complexion of my draft.

Part of it was bad luck. "Just missing" became a recurring theme, particularly at starting pitcher. The one pick I'd like to have back is Joe Mauer in Round 4. I like him and all, but particularly in Head-to-Head leagues, where each team starts just one catcher, there's more than enough to go around. Case in point: Wilson Ramos, my 10th-ranked player at the position, went undrafted. My starting rotation would look a heck of a lot better with Madison Bumgarner or Chris Sale at the top.

I compensated as best I could in the second half of the draft, aiming for the starting pitchers with the highest ceilings. By the end, I had more players at the position (nine) than anybody, and I only need to hit pay dirt on four or five. And of course, my offense is strong. If nothing else, I got a steal in Billy Hamilton in Round 11.

As for how everyone else's team turned out, see for yourself.

Evan Gattis playing in left field in 2015 is 'an option' for Braves
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3:07 pm ET) Braves catcher Evan Gattis appeared in a career-high 108 games in his second season in the majors in 2014, which was three more games than he played as a rookie in 2013. He appeared in 93 games at catcher and three games at DH, but he made no starts at first base or left field, which were two positions he saw playing time at as a rookie.

Though, Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez indicated Gattis could play around 140 games next season if he were to play in left field on top of his catcher responsibilities.

"That's an option," Gonzalez said, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Beltran appeared in just three of the final 20 games in September because of the issue. He finished the year with a .233/.301/.402 line with 15 home runs and 49 RBI in 403 at-bats.

Indians optimistic about Nick Swisher bouncing back in 2015
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12:07 pm ET) Indians general manager Chris Antonetti talked Monday about how the team expects first baseman Nick Swisher, who finished the season on the disabled list due to problems with his knees, to bounce back next season.

"It’s important to get the surgeries out of the way, especially as we look to next year," Antonetti said, per MLB.com. "Retrospectively, I don’t think we knew what he was trying to battle through and perform through. It’s easy to look back now and wonder if we could have done it differently, done the surgeries sooner. To his credit, he worked hard and tried to play through it for the team. Encouraging: He should come in to spring training ready to go and contribute the way we all know he’s capable of contributing."
