2014 Draft Prep: AL-only H2H mock draft

Senior Fantasy Writer
  •

Mike Trout has pretty much established himself as the No. 1 overall pick (at least in the realm of our CBS mock drafts) in nearly every format. He went first in our latest 10-team AL-only H2H points mock this week, with nemesis Miguel Cabrera going second. They were followed by Yu Darvish, Jacoby Ellsbury, Robinson Cano, Prince Fielder, Adrian Beltre, Chris Davis, Max Scherzer and Edwin Encarnacion. You'll get no issue here with the 4-10 picks -- we could have scrambled them up in almost any order and a decent case could be made for anyone in any spot.

There's some borderline first round AL-only value that trickled into the second round, too, with Adam Jones and Jose Bautista being taken in the first five picks. Joe Mauer was the first catcher taken (sixth pick in the second round), followed immediately by Carlos Santana (seventh pick in the second round).

Bounceback candidate Albert Pujols was the fourth pick of the second round, taken ahead of Bautista, Jose Reyes, and Felix Hernandez. As for some other possible bouncebacks: R.A. Dickey went in round 4, Josh Hamilton in round 6, CC Sabathia in round 8, and John Axford in round 10.

The first closer off the board was Greg Holland, who lasted until the second pick of Round 6. And the pick set off a closer run, with Koji Uehara and Glen Perkins being taken later in the round, and Joe Nathan and David Robertson going in the seventh.

As for some noteworthy top prospects, Jose Abreu went in the fourth, Masahiro Tanaka in the fifth, Xander Bogaerts in the eighth, George Springer in the ninth, Taijuan Walker in the 10th, Nick Castellanos in the 13th, Trevor Bauer in the 18th, Jon Singleton and James Paxton in the 19th, and Kyle Gibson in the 21st. Byron Buxton, the top prospect in the game (who is expected to spend most -- if not all -- of 2014 in the minors), was not drafted.

We completed this draft about 20 minutes before the Andy Dirks injury news broke. With the huge stolen base upside of likely replacement Rajai Davis (tempered slightly by this format not rewarding steals as much as a Roto league), we probably would have seen the speedster taken in the 16th-18th rounds.

Freddie Freeman slugs 14th home run Wednesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(9:59 pm ET) Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman went 1 for 3 with a walk and a three-run home run in his team's 6-1 victory over the Marlins.

Freeman was just 1 for 24 in his previous six games coming into Wednesday, and his home run was just his first of the month. Even with his recent struggles, Freeman has still hit .284/.375/.479 with 14 home runs and 56 RBI in 388 at-bats.

Nathan Eovaldi gives up five runs in loss vs. Braves
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(9:55 pm ET) Marlins pitcher Nathan Eovaldi was stuck with a loss Wednesday, giving up five earned runs on six hits and two walks in seven innings while striking out two in his team's 6-1 defeat against the Braves.

Eovaldi (5-6) has gone 0-3 over his last five starts while surrendering 22 earned runs in 31 innings. He fell behind 5-0 after just two innings when he surrendered a three-run home run in the second frame. Eovaldi owns a 4.20 ERA and 90:26 K:BB ratio in 130 2/3 innings. He's scheduled to take on the Nationals Monday.

Ervin Santana strikes out 10 in win vs. Marlins
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(9:54 pm ET) Braves pitcher Ervin Santana picked up a win Wednesday, giving up just one earned run on six hits and three walks in 7 1/3 innings while striking out 10 in his team's 6-1 victory over the Marlins.

Santana (9-6) recorded double-digit strikeouts for just the second time this season after striking out only one batter in his previous start. He owns a 3.87 ERA and 107:37 K:BB ratio in 123 1/3 innings. Santana is slated to face the Padres Monday.

Dan Haren gets plundered by the Pirates
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(9:51 pm ET) Dodgers pitcher Dan Haren had a rough start Wednesday against the Pirates.

Haren gave up five runs on four hits over five innings. He struck out six and walked three. Haren threw 84 pitches during the appearance. Haren got off to a terrible start. He gave up two singles to open the game, and eventually walked another batter to load the bases. The first run against Haren scored on another walk as the bases were loaded. Haren then allowed a sacrifice fly and a two-run double. By the end of the first inning, he had given up four runs.
