2014 Draft Prep: NL-only H2H mock draft

  •

You know you're in a the midst of a different Fantasy landscape when you're drafting and neither Mike Trout nor Miguel Cabrera comes off the board with the first pick. In most cases, if this is what you've experienced, you've walked into an NL-only draft.

NL-only leaguers have to shift gears in more ways than just rethinking the top pick, and that was apparent in our recent 10-team NL-only Head-to-Head mock draft. In mixed leagues, it pays for most owners to wait several rounds to nab a shortstop, but a majority of owners (six out of 10) filled the position by the end of the fourth round. The senior circuit is not only home to the two most popular shortstops in Fantasy -- Troy Tulowitzki and Hanley Ramirez -- but only three of the top nine shortstops in average draft position (ADP) call the AL home. Owners in this draft took advantage of the relative bounty of quality shortstops and took care of that need early, while also avoiding lower-end and risky types like Starlin Castro, Jhonny Peralta and Jimmy Rollins.

Second base, on the other hand, is a far more scarce position in the NL than the AL. Matt Carpenter, the league's only true elite at the position, did go early, though at 11th overall, he wasn't quite deemed to have Robison Cano-in-mixed-league value. After Carpenter's departure, owners were in no hurry to dip into the depleted second base pool, with Martin Prado and Jedd Gyorko being the only other players at the position to be taken prior to Round 8.

As has been typical of our mixed league Head-to-Head mocks, owners took their time helping themselves to the strong corps of starting pitchers that are available in both leagues. Clayton Kershaw and Adam Wainwright were both selected as first-rounders, but it wasn't until the latter half of the second round that we saw a slow trickle of starters getting taken. Once each team had secured their ace, the first true pitching run occurred in Round 6, and young, high-upside talent (e.g., Julio Teheran, Gerrit Cole, Tony Cingrani, Michael Wacha, Shelby Miller) dominated the skein.

In our recent mixed league mocks, owners have started pursuing relievers in the seventh round, and even in this deep league, the trend continued. Craig Kimbrel and Kenley Jansen were the first relievers taken, but it was the late eighth round selection of Aroldis Chapman that kicked off more widespread interest in filling RP slots. A few teams opted to fill one of their reliever slots with an RP-eligible starting pitcher, but several others decided to take their chances on a set-up reliever who might eventually inherit saves (e.g., Rex Brothers, Francisco Rodriguez, Joaquin Benoit).

Eventually in single-league drafts, the draft pool gets thin on solid producers with a stable role, and that's when we see prospects becoming poplar picks. From the 14th round on, many owners took fliers on players who are either unproven or likely to begin the year in the minors, with Archie Bradley, Chris Owings, Carlos Martinez, Noah Syndergaard, Oscar Taveras and Travis d'Arnaud being among the early prospect selections.

NL-only drafts require a certain amount of risk taking, especially in the middle rounds, but these 10 intrepid owners were up to the task.

Dodgers C Yasmani Grandal still reaching base consistently
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12:03 pm ET) Dodgers catcher Yasmani Grandal is on an interesting run. He has gotten at least one hit in every other game since May 8 and is hitless in the others.

The bottom line is a 7-for-28 stretch that has lowered his batting average from .307 to a still-strong .287. Grandal has been among the pleasant surprises for the Dodgers with a fine .402 on-base percentage. He has 20 walks in 101 at-bats.

A's OF Coco Crisp (neck) may need season-ending surgery
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(12:02 pm ET) The neck injury to Athletics outfielder Coco Crisp could be potentially very serious. CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports Crisp may require season-ending neck surgery, though Crisp is getting other opinions before making a decision.

Crisp had an MRI on Thursday and hasn't played since suffering the injury on Tuesday. The team has not provided any further updates on his status, but he is unlikely to play this weekend in Tampa.

Diamondbacks SS Chris Owings still up-and-down at the plate
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:55 am ET) Hot-and-cold Diamondbacks shortstop Chris Owings was hot early this week. Now he's cold.

Owings has remained inconsistent all season. The latest example was a 12-for-22 outburst followed by his current 2-for-17 slide. It all adds up to a mediocre .252/.273/.367 slash line with just 10 RBI in 139 at-bats.

He is also striking out at a much higher rate in 2015 than he did a year ago. Owings has fanned 35 times.

Mets are in no hurry to trade young pitching for a shortstop
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(11:53 am ET) The Mets are seeming less and less likely to deal from their surplus of young pitching, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman. There have been numerous on-going talks about the team possibly looking to deal one of their young arms for a shortstop.

But as Heyman reports, the Mets are not necessarily rushing to go out and get a shortstop. The club is apparently willing to give Wilmer Flores more time to prove himself. They also have a stock of young shortstops in the minor leagues, including Matt Reynolds, Gavin Cecchini and 19-year-old Amed Rosario.

Reds OF Marlon Byrd playing his role in team batting slump
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:48 am ET) The team batting slump that has ravaged the Reds has hit outfielder Marlon Byrd hard as well.

Byrd has been scuffling for two weeks, during which time he has just five hits in 35 at-bats. He is currently on a 1-for-17 slide.

He has generally remained productive, however. Byrd has six home runs and 15 RBI in May, but his overall slash line on the year is at .207/.283/.430. He has fanned 42 times in just 135 at-bats.

Rival executive: Cubs willing to deal prospects Baez, Vogelbach
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(11:47 am ET) The Cubs appear willing to trade prospects Javier Baez and Dan Vogelbach, a rival executive told CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman. The executive suggests it is partly because both players were drafted by a previous regime.

However, Heyman writes the reality is there are issues with Baez and Vogelbach. Baez is working on cutting down his strikeouts and getting rid of the perception he "doesn't make contact," according to one rival's assessment. One scout said Vogelbach is a "30 fielder," using scout parlance for well-below average on the 20-80 scale.

Vogelbach was the Cubs' minor-league player of the month for April. The first baseman has a .328/.449/.515/.964 slash line through 39 games for Double-A Tennessee. He has a career .289/.382/.485/.867 slash line. He was a second-round pick in 2011.

Baez was sent to the minors after struggling in spring training. He missed some time due to a personal leave, but the former top-10 prospect has a .284/.369/.405/.774 slash line through 20 games for Triple-A Iowa. He has 22 strikeouts in 20 games.

Rival teams looking to struggling Brewers for possible deals
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(11:45 am ET) With the Brewers looking more and more like eventual sellers, rival teams are saying pitchers Matt Garza and Kyle Lohse have limited trade value, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

Early on, teams seem to be preferring Lohse due to his pending free agency at the end of the season, and his excellent clubhouse presence. Both pitchers have struggled this season, each with an ERA over 5.00 in nine starts.

Heyman also notes that teams are unsure if the Brewers would consider trading young shortstop Jean Segura, who is currently on the disabled list with a broken finger. There seems to also be uncertainty whether catcher Jonathan Lucroy or outfielder Carlos Gomez would be available, though Gomez would probably be the most likely to go since his contract is up after the 2016 season.

Braves 2B Jace Peterson cools off after two-week tear
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:42 am ET) The hot streak that sent the numbers soaring for Braves second baseman Jace Peterson is decidedly over.

Peterson went on a 20-for-51 tear in late April and early May to catapult his average from .171 to .293 and increase his on-base percentage to .362. He has not gone into a slump, but he has certainly cooled off. Peterson has just five hits in 27 at-bats since.

His slash line is now at .269/.346/.328.

Marlins' Tom Koehler could go to bullpen when Fernandez returns
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(11:38 am ET) Marlins pitcher Tom Koehler's days in the rotation could be numbered. With youngster Jose Fernandez making his way back from Tommy John surgery, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports Koehler could be moved to the bullpen when Fernandez returns, which is likely a month or two away.

Heyman notes that Koehler is seen by some as a possible future closer, with one scout saying "he has the stuff to do it". The Marlins' troubles with the back-end of their bullpen have been well-documented, so if Koehler can in fact fill that role, it would be a welcomed relief for the club.

The Phillies may be stuck with Jonathan Papelbon's contract
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11:37 am ET) The Phillies have been stuck with closer Jonathan Papelbon's contract, and may continue to be stuck moving forward, reports CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

Papelbon is making $13 million in 2015 and has a $13-million vesting option for 2016 that Milwaukee or another acquiring team may need to fully guarantee in order to get the pitcher to waive his no-trade clause.

"The dollars are just way too big," a rival GM said.
