Mike Pelfrey begins throwing program

(6:52 pm ET) Twins pitcher Mike Pelfrey began a throwing program Wednesday, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

Pelfrey underwent surgery on his elbow in June to alleviate the pressure on his ulnar nerve. He said earlier in July that the numbness was finally gone from his hand, and it appears he's ready to start working his way back toward a return. Pelfrey hasn't pitched for the Twins since May 1.


Rockies tab Pedro Hernandez to start Thursday

(6:49 pm ET) The Rockies will call up pitcher Pedro Hernandez to start Thursday's game against the Cubs, MLB.com reports.

Hernandez has been uneven at the minor-league level this season, going 6-6 with a 6.14 ERA and 52:29 K:BB ratio in 85 innings, giving up a whopping 115 hits during his 18 appearances. He compiled a 6.83 ERA in 56 2/3 innings with the Twins last season.


Jason Heyward remains out of lineup Wednesday

(6:36 pm ET) Braves outfielder Jason Heyward is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers.

Heyward wasn't able to play Tuesday after coming out of Monday's game with a back injury. He was expected to return to the lineup either Wednesday or Thursday, so it's likely he'll be ready to come back tomorrow. Heyward has hit .260/.350/.379 with nine home runs, 42 RBI and 12 stolen bases in 396 at-bats.


Report: Royals out on Jonny Gomes

(6:33 pm ET) The Royals are out on an attempt to acquire Red Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes, ESPNBoston.com reports.

A report surfaced a few weeks ago that Gomes was on the Royals' list of potential trade targets in a search for a right-handed bat. He has hit .239/.335/.361 with six home runs and 32 RBI in 205 at-bats.


Orioles, Rangers discussing Neal Cotts

(6:30 pm ET) The Orioles and Rangers are discussing a potential trade to send pitcher Neal Cotts to Baltimore, MLB.com reports.

The Orioles are on the lookout for a relief pitcher who has success against batters on both sides of the plate. The Rangers have been considering keeping Cotts through the deadline and attempting to resign him for next season. He has posted a 3.52 ERA and 50:18 K:BB ratio in 46 innings.


Report: Royals, Pirates, Marlins in on Ian Kennedy

(6:26 pm ET) The Royals, Pirates and Marlins are among the teams in the mix to acquire Padres pitcher Ian Kennedy, FOXSports.com reports.

The Padres are leaning towards hanging on to the talented starting pitcher, but the opportunity is there for one of the interested teams to bowl them over with an offer. He is 8-9 with a 3.66 ERA and 143:42 K:BB ratio in 135 1/3 innings over 22 starts.


Matt Harvey penciled in for mound work Friday

(6:14 pm ET) Mets pitcher Matt Harvey is tentatively scheduled to throw off a mound Friday, Newsday reports.

Harvey was earlier reported to be eyeing a return to the mound next week, and he still holds out hope he'll be able to pitch for the major-league team this season despite undergoing Tommy John surgery last October.


Carlos Gonzalez out of lineup Wednesday

(6:12 pm ET) Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez is not in Wednesday's starting lineup.

Gonzalez is continuing to battle soreness in his left knee and right ankle, the Denver Post reports. He was scratched Saturday with the ankle issue and didn't start Sunday either, though he did come into the game late. Gonzalez has hit .243/.294/.432 with 10 home runs and 36 RBI in 243 at-bats.


Alex Presley hits off tee Wednesday

(6:07 pm ET) Astros outfielder Alex Presley hit off a tee Wednesday morning and is encouraged by his progress, MLB.com reports.

"I'm happy to be moving forward," he said. "You don't want to go in there and try to go full speed and then not come back if you try to do it too early."

Presley has been working at 60-70 percent speed while swinging the bat. He has been sidelined by a strained oblique since July 7.


Brandon Belt increases activities Wednesday

(6:02 pm ET) Giants first baseman Brandon Belt increased his baseball-related activities Wednesday, MLB.com reports.

Belt, who is recovering from a concussion, has been sidelined since July 19, but he could make his way back into the lineup at some point in the team's weekend series. The team has yet to decide whether he'll need a rehab assignment before returning.
