Nationals 3B Yunel Escobar (hand) out of Friday lineup

(3:45 pm ET) A hand injury sustained Thursday on a hit-by-pitch has Nationals third baseman Yunel Escobar set to sit Friday night against Miami.

Anthony Rendon will assume his position with Trea Turner playing second.

Escobar had been on a roll before going down with nine hits in his last 19 at-bats to sweeten his slash line to .308/.367/.423.


Nationals CF Michael Taylor a no-go Friday

(3:42 pm ET) As anticipated, Nationals center fielder Michael Taylor is not in the lineup Friday night against Miami. He could miss the entire series with a knee bruise.

Taylor sustained the injury when he collided with a wall Thursday trying to make a catch.


Cardinals place Trevor Rosenthal on paternity leave; recall Sam Tuivailala

(3:36 pm ET) The Cardinals placed reliever Trevor Rosenthal on the paternity list, the team announced Friday. Rosenthal has 41 saves with a 1.52 ERA this season.

With Rosenthal on the paternity list, the team called up pitcher Samuel Tuivailala, who has a 1.76 ERA over 41 innings at Triple-A.


Rockies make variety of roster moves Friday

Scuffling Red Sox 1B Travis Shaw out of Friday lineup

(3:17 pm ET) Slumping Travis Shaw is the odd man out of the lineup for the Red Sox on Friday as they begin a series against the host Mets. It's his first absence since Aug. 12.

David Ortiz is set to play first base instead.

Shaw has just two hits in his last 21 at-bats to lower his average from .375 to .312.


Phillies place Elvis Araujo on disabled list: recall Nefi Ogando

Nationals' Michael Taylor (knee) expected to need rest

Nationals promote OF Matt den Dekker

den Dekker takes the place of Denard Span, who was placed on the DL. den Dekker hit .184 with two home runs and five RBI in 49 at-bats earlier this season.


Mariners promote C John Hicks from Triple-A

(2:21 pm ET) The Mariners have brought up catcher John Hicks from Triple-A Tacoma to replace the demoted Mike Zunino, per MLB.com.

He is set to join the team in Chicago on Friday night for the second game of a series against the White Sox.

Hicks owns a six-game hitting streak, but has otherwise not performed well at the plate this season. His slash line sits at .245/.282/.362 and he has whiffed 71 times in 298 at-bats.


Rockies 1B Justin Morneau to begin rehab assignment Friday

(2:17 pm ET) Rockies first baseman Justin Morneau has been cleared to begin his rehab assignment Friday at Double-A New Britain, reports The Denver Post.

Morneau is expected to need at least three games before he can return to the team. A concussion has kept Morneau out since mid-May.
