Pirates CF Andrew McCutchen collects four hits in Tuesday's win

(1:59 am ET) Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen 4 for 5 at the plate to help lead the Pirates to a 7-4 win over the Giants on Tuesday.

McCutchen drove in two runs when he singled off Chris Heston in the third inning. He also had a triple during the game and scored two runs.

Over his last 13 games, McCutchen is 23 for 47 with three home runs and 12 RBI.


Mariners closer Fernando Rodney coughs up another save

(1:57 am ET) Mariners closer Fernando Rodney was charged with a blown save Tuesday night against the Yankees.

Rodney permitted a run-scoring single to Stephen Drew with two outs in the ninth to send the game to extras. He was charged with one earned run on two hits and a walk while striking out one over one inning of work. Of his 23 pitches, 13 were strikes.

Rodney has blown two of the last three save chances. He owns a 6.85 ERA, a 1.79 WHIP and 20:12 K:BB ratio over 22 1/3 innings.

(1:57 am ET) Mariners pitcher Mike Montgomery, a former top-20 prospect, got off to a dominant start in his first career start, but was unable to factor into the decision Tuesday night against the Yankees. 

Montgomery, who was promoted from Triple-A Tacoma prior to the game, surrendered a run-scoring double to Mark Teixeira in the third inning for his only blemish of the evening. He was in line for the win until closer Fernando Rodney coughed up the game-tying run in the ninth that sent the game to extras.

Montgomery allowed one earned run on four hits and two walks while striking out four over six innings pitched. Of his 97 pitches, 64 were strikes.


Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia settles with no-decision vs. Seattle

(1:57 am ET) Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia turned in a dominant outing, but was outdueled by rookie Mike Montgomery and settled for a no-decision against Seattle on Tuesday.

Sabathia surrendered a run-scoring single to Nelson Cruz in the third and a run-scoring double to Austin Jackson in the sixth for his only blemishes of the evening. He permitted two earned runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out six over 5 2/3 innings of work. Of his 94 pitches, 62 were strikes.

Sabathia has allowed seven earned runs over his last two starts (11 2/3 innings). He owns a 5.45 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP over 66 innings pitched this season. His next start will come Tuesday at home against the Nationals.


Pirates RP Mark Melancon earns 15th save of season Tuesday

(1:52 am ET) Pirates pitcher Mark Melancon did not allow a run during the ninth inning of Tuesday's 7-4 win over the Giants to earn his 15th save of the season.

Melancon surrendered one hit before recording the final three outs. He is 15 for 16 in save opportunities this season with a 2.52 ERA.


Giants SP Chris Heston struggles in Tuesday's loss

(1:42 am ET) Giants pitcher Chris Heston had a dismal performance during Tuesday's 7-4 loss to the Pirates.

Heston allowed five runs on seven hits before being pulled after pitching 3 2/3 innings. He also struck out six and walked three during the outing.

Tuesday's start was quite different than his last outing when he did not allow a run in 7 1/3 innings. Heston has given up at least five runs in three of his last four starts. His next expected start is scheduled for Tuesday at the New York Mets.


Pirates SP A.J. Burnett earns sixth win of season Tuesday

(1:38 am ET) After going winless in his first five starts to open the season, Pirates pitcher A.J. Burnett has now earned a win in his last six starts.

Burnett allowed four runs on eight hits over five innings of work during Tuesday's 7-4 win over the Giants. He also struck out five and walked two. His ERA now stands at 2.20.

Despite earning victories in his last two outings, Burnett has given up a total of nine runs (eight earned) during that time. It was his second-straight start failing to record a quality start. His next expected start is scheduled for Monday against the Brewers.


A's Kendall Graveman remains starter; Drew Pomeranz in bullpen

(1:36 am ET) Despite Athletics pitcher Drew Pomeranz being expected to come off the disabled list Wednesday, he will not immediately join the rotation when he does, reports the Bay Area News Group.

With Kendall Graveman producing three quality starts in a row, Pomeranz will begin pitching out of the bullpen while Graveman will keep his spot in the rotation.

"I feel I'm getting close to be able to go deeper into games," Graveman said.


Mets demote 2B Danny Muno after Tuesday's loss

(1:28 am ET) The Mets sent second baseman Danny Muno to the minor leagues after Tuesday's loss to the Padres, reports ESPNNewYork.com.

Muno was optioned to make room for Dillon Gee. In 14 at-bats this season, Muno was hitting .071.


Padres SP Ian Kennedy whiffs eight, picks up win No. 3

(1:27 am ET) Padres pitcher Ian Kennedy struck out eight and registered a quality start for the win Tuesday night against the Mets.

Kennedy (3-5) surrendered a run-scoring single to Michael Cuddyer in the opening frame and a run-scoring single to Wilmer Flores in the sixth inning for his only blemishes of the evening. He yielded two earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six over six innings of a 7-2 victory. Of his 105 pitches, 71 were strikes.

Kennedy lowered his ERA from 7.15 to 6.60 after Tuesday's gem. He will look to remain in the rotation with another solid outing on Monday against the Braves in Atlanta.
